New Coffee shop on 7th...
Cafe Eleven is probably the worst yet. The Slope is doomed for good coffee. Gorilla sucks, Heights coffee is cute but they can't make a good cup. Cafe Regular again cute but their La Colombe preperation is putrid. I read in Edible Brookln about Red Horse, how dare they compare them to Grumpy, Oslo, Joe, or Gimmee. This place doesn't know what they want to be. I guess a library. They have Barrington but like all the other cafes in this neighborhood they don't how to make it? Large capuccino? Come on! Cafe Eleven is owned by Italians, yet they have no ceramic cups. So wasteful, this town doesn't care about coffee, they just want wi-fi and coffee flavored milk shakes. At least Dunkin doesn't pretend to be an artisinal stomping ground. Go to Grumpy or 9th street for the real deal even though an espresso is $2.50 or something. When will NY get it? You can sit and have a real beer in a real glass, why can't you sit for 10 minutes and have a traditional coffee in a real mug? Why are espresso drinks even offered to go?

ouch. i like cafe eleven. their cafe americano reminded me specifically of the coffee i drank in italy. no ceramic cup, but certainly not a frou frou "coffee flavored milk shake". i for one am glad they are here. ah, well. to each his own.

Gorilla sucks? Hardly. Best coffee in the slope. Cafe 11, I will grant you does stink.

Subject: Espresso only tastes good with Opera Buffa
Try the espresso at the Brooklyn Lyceum- especially during intermission of the wonderful Brooklyn Repertory Opera production of Cosi fan Tutte, featuring the Hellgate Harmonie Orchestra.
Performances: June 9, 17, 24 (afternoons); and June 12 & 19 (eveings).
Did you know that the opening scene of Cosi takes place in a cafe in Naples (bottega di cafe)?

Wow... Your review was a little harsh there but I so totally give you the right.. I just am old enough where I always prefer to make my own cup and there are plenty of places to buy coffee beans in the Hood and bring them home.. I have a grinder and 3 different coffee methods (including a Cuisanart drip) and depending on what I long for I can create my own and if it needs to leave the house I have insulated containers I take a long..
hey I am an ancient woman (and a wise woman at that...LOl) but it astounds me how much the average 35 and under Slopers shells out for coffee in a week. Yeah sometimes it is totally necessary in one's life to purchse a cup here and there but I just don't get why coffee is the entree in to whatever.. sitting alone with your laptop, sitting a lone and trying to be social, sitting alone and wishing you were more social or less social..
Coffee is Coffee.. It is not the entree in to a social life or an isolated life or meeting your significant other..
Hold the arrows!! Don't attack me!!
But if anyone really has some insight in to the coffee culture that has emerged in PS and many other Urban centers and rural enclaves.. I am interested in hearing you outline your PHD dissertation on the subject right here on this forum. -
sitting alone with your laptop, sitting a lone and trying to be social, sitting alone and wishing you were more social or less social..
uh...I think you hit the nail on the head. So, I guess you get the prize not me.
Coffee is Coffee.. It is not the entree in to a social life or an isolated life or meeting your significant other..
But, I'll go out on a limb and say I love the Tea Lounge COFFEE. I grab a way too expensive bag of their Dark Sumatran beans, throw bucks at a hippie, and run screaming into the night (not the morning - it takes ten minutes for them to finish their conversation and stirring in sugar). We have a Cuisanart, pack it tight, treat it right, and the coffee's outtasite. I'm guessing many would disagree, or can't vouch for the coffee since the atmosphere is so heinous. Though I'm sure the morning baby people appreciate it. I on the other hand never have to hear Kind of Blue or Uprising again. I'd give my left one for Elvis C's Almost Blue or even Rainbow Rising. -
NoiseJoke.. I guess I caught your attention... ha ha.. before I go to sleep.. I do not claim that there is someone else ( I watched the double negatives there ) that will not a make a better cup of coffee than I in the tea kunge, or anywhere.. I just scream out.. coffee is coffee and as much a ritual that it is indeedis. I can't vibe with the social adjustment that it now proclaims..
-
Red Horse, Gorilla and Mule are pretty damn good as well. The tea lounge...yuck, the atmosphere is just too much to even be bothered. The thought of drinking coffee on those nasty stained ripped up couches is just too gross.
-
I'm a regular at Cafe Regular (What up, Martin???) and think the coffee and the vibe are excellent. A unique business where, if you've been there more than a few times, they know what you want when you walk in the door. Perfrect neighborhood joint!
Rogerroger - you might need to just hit D'Amicos and brew your own, buddy! -
i love ozzie's. coffee is delicious.
i mainly hit the one on 7th. -
Gorilla is the best coffee in NYC period. It's the only coffee I've had in New York that even comes close to approximating what you can get at any corner shop on the west coast. As for the rest of 'em: blech. And, Ozzie's, I'm looking at you.
-
I like the coffee at teh bodega on the corner of 14th and 7th Avenue. Nice price, too.
-
I'm new to the neighborhood but I have been to both Ozzie's locations a few times and I am very happy with it. Granted I have not had a hot cup of coffee yet. Regardless, as long as the local places stay in business and don't becomes Starbuck's then I am happy.

Gimme Coffee! (lorimer street, w-burg) is by far the best coffee in the borough/city. they are an ithaca, ny based place, with 4 locations upstate... they also thoroughly train their baristas, unlike many other places... so that each makes conistently excellent lattes etc (and they froth milk for each individually, unlike other local places...) it makes a big difference- my big objection to gorilla, tea lounge, ozzies etc is that the coffee is totally inconsistent, and often not worth the cost.
-
When I moved to the Prospect Heights area I tried the coffee at Deacon Blue, which brews a Brooklyn coffee called Hena. It's excellent. Better hot then cold though. For iced coffee, try "The Usual" on Vanderbilt.

Yeah, but what good is that to someone in Park Slope? -
I've found that Redhorse has the best coffee in the hood - although my complaint with them is that its sometimes not hot enough. Gorilla is the worst I've had. I really don't think they know what they're doing as far as the roasting goes because every cup I've had there has a horrible burnt taste to it. I even tried getting iced coffee twice and it was so bad I had to throw it away both times.
-
rogerroger, I totally agree with you on Grumpy. I like Joes on 8th and I also happen to like Gorilla for drip.
If you're really into your brew, make your own. Or, even roast your own as well and get a french press or the bodum vacuum coffee maker.
If you're ever in the city, head over to the Roasting Plant in the LES. They roast their own beans and have this unique pneumatic system that takes the beans to the machine to grind and brew that's worth checking out.
veets, I totally go to coffee shops to be social, not to really drink the coffee, even if I'm alone with my magazine! :-D -

this is 1000% correct. -
Gorilla is the choice for anyone wanting flippin' great coffee.
-
Geezus, people. Tell me exactly where - in the Slope, please - I'm supposed to get beans that are better than Tea Lounge Dark Sumatran? Gimme a solid suggestion for a dark, dark bean. Not Gorilla. I'm not saying it sucks, I'm just sayin' I don't like it.
Or gimme a reason more than D'Amico's to go down to Court Street. I live in Kensington and I got wheels. I like it dark, black and no sugar. So, it's gotta be real.
BTW Tea Lounge IS a heinous place. But, even the coffee in house is real good and even if you hate it, it's certainly NOT inconsistent. -
Subject: Coffee Beans
Well, here goes my first official post: something I care deeply about. For beans, you can try Java Joe on 8th Street and 7th Avenue, though I don't like the way they store them. They have some very dark roasts, but the style is quite different from Gorilla. The coffee brewed over at Has Beans on 17th and 5th isn't all that great, but the beans aren't half bad. The tea and coffee bean place on the corner of Clinton and Atlantic has some good stuff...a little pricy, though. I think Red Horse sells the Barrington beans, and Cafe Sutra on 18th and 5th sells Intelligentsia, but I can't vouch for their freshness.
Farther afield, I love the beans at Gimme Coffee in Williamsburg. Try the French Roast. Also, there's a guy in Dyker Heights on 13th Avenue and, oh, 68th Street or something like that who roasts his own, mainly to supply restaurants in the area. But the beans, while not the highest artisanal quality, are very fresh and inexpensive. They're called Nicoletti and Sons. While you're down there, you can pick up some crusty Italian bread from Royal Crown Bakery up the block. -
D'Amico is the place for coffee beans.. no question.. witness logevity.
-
I used to buy at Leaf n Bean. Are they still around? Now I like getting the Barrington beans from Red Horse.
-
No one likes Paris on 9th street, eh? I don't really drink coffee, but my wife loves to grab a cup there...at least she did until the Board of Health went to town on them.
And Ozzie's...maybe they have good coffee, but I've yet to successfully make a purchase there. I've tried twice in the 6 years I've been in the Slope and both times that person behind the counter decided it was more important to wipe down the counter with a rag or rearrange the muffins instead of helping the long line of customers. Walked out both times. -
I do like Paris many people in the nabe do as well. Too bad they can't seem to re-open. They put a sihn up recently about the current remaining violations and the owner has filed an harrasment complaint of some kind against the Health Dept.. They do have another stor that is functioning.

gimme coffee beans can be ordered online for those who are not for fortunate enough to make the trip to their w-burg location (or those upstate)

Your wish is my command. Kicking Horse Cliff Hanger espresso roast or Kick Ass dark roast. Fair trade, shade grown, all that stuff. Available at Leaf & Bean -- and the folks there are very nice and really good about recommending other roasts that you might like if you tell them what you like and don't like.
I don't like Gorilla. I really, really want to like them. I love their branding, love the roasters, love the clever marketing -- just can't stand the coffee. It has that burned Starbucks taste that just screams, "Hey, coffee that tastes like coffee is for rubes -- if it's burned black, it's sophisticated and European!" I can't tell their Yemeni from their Tanzanian; all I taste is the rancidity of burned coffee oil.
I used to love Delices de Paris. For my money, the best cup in the Slope. However, since the two owners split, the place has gone steeply downhill. Filthy, filthy floor, tables, counters -- it was really gross to see people prepare food and coffee in a mini-kitchen that was dirty and disintegrating. Plus, the bored teenagers that worked in there would give you a steaming mugful of surly attitude every time. I'm saddened, but not surprised that it got closed down. They'd just stopped giving a damn. -
brooke Lynn... I do agree with you about Paris.. The quality on everything went down and the prices were always steep and I too noticed the place didn't look clean and spify as it once had. There is another thread going where this place gets mentioned in reference to the BoH closing and how they feel they are being harassed. Hey who knows.. could be true But I am finding it hard to come to their defense when I know the downhill slide this place was on before the closing.
-
I brew my own daily but when out and about I head for Gorilla.
I've been in PS since before Ozzie's showed up and I've yet to get a decent cup there...
Sometimes Conneticut Muffin with an add-shot works ina pinch...
Cocoa Bar was a cup-o-pee last time I tried...anyway... -

Unfortunately, I have to agree. We went there today and it is quite obvious that they don't have the slightest idea what they're doing. It was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo watered down. Like the taste when you forget to put in the spreader in a percolator. They must be using the equipment wrong.
Its a shame because I really like the set up in there. Lots of space, but not too many chairs jammed together. Is there a particular day when someone is working there that knows how to make coffee?
Howdy, Stranger!
