Funeral Procession on 9th Street

I realize this is a morbid nosey question but my curiosity has gotten the best of me! Does anyone know what was going on? It was Sunday afternoon around 2:00pm, around 60 people walking behind a a band. Very somber and very beautiful. Whoever passed away was very loved.

  • His name is Alex. He was 22 years old and died in Iraq. He leaves behind a wife and four month old baby. He was waked Sat and Sun and today is the funeral.
  • Is the neighborhood doing anything for the family?
  • that is so sad...
  • or it might have been this memorial procession held last sunday which headed to barbes down 9th st:

As many of you already know, our dear friend and colleague drummer Take Toriyama tragically died over Memorial Day weekend. There will be a march in his honor with members of Slavic Soul Party and other musicians leaving from Prospect Park this Sunday at 1pm and arriving at Barbès shortly thereafter for an informal gathering in his memory. We hope that his many friends and the many musicians he worked with will be able to attend. His parents and brother will be present. There will be a collection pot for private anonymous contributions that will help his family cover the expenses of their trip from Japan and of the funeral arrangements.

We will gather, this Sunday at 1pm, at 9th st and Prospect Park West (parkside) and then proceed to barbès.
  • I knew Taki and I am happy that you posted this memorial event for him and will spread the word.
However this sunday (as in yesterday) the only memorial I am aware of on 9th street was for this fallen soldier who was laid out at Duffy's Funeral Home.
  • So that's what it was. I saw it on the way to work and wondered who was being buried. People were starting to gather, including a van with volunteers from an organization that attends veterans' funerals. Everyone was very quiet and I saw quite a few flags. Got a real lump in my throat.
  • Are we are talking two separate funerals here. I saw the "sort of New Orleans" style funeral march up 9th street and I don't think that it was for a veteran. I think that the "funeral march" was for Taki and the other big gathering on Saturday was for the vet?
  • Well let us not use that word . This young man who was killed was a fallen soldier. I am not sure what the OP noticed on Sunday afternoon. But if there was any action near Duffy's on Sat or Sun or Mon Morning it had to do with the wake and the funeral for this young soldier and not Take.

May they both rest in peace.
  • yes the barbes- sponsored take memorial was last sunday, june 3rd.
  • ok.. so probably what the OP saw and was moved by did have to do with Take. I am sorry I didn't know about that.. would have participated but we will all remember him in our own way.
