Crazy ProHo Tweens make Gawker.com

Did that article say that it would be nice if those kids attacked people in Park Slope? The PS hatred may be getting a little silly at this point...

Thanks for the link brooklynleather---
Before I read that, I had considered writing to the editor of the Brooklyn paper to complain about the "tween terror" article and it's accompanying cartoon, but decided to let it go. Now I will for sure. It's pretty annoying that this kind of sloppy and insubstantial reporting is what passes for local news.
I can't tell you how annoyed I was when I read that ridiculous article and how pissed off I was to be quoted in it.
While I wanted to share my story on this blog, I did not choose to be associated with the story that actually had the words "tweens" "gangs" and "terrorized" in it's headlines.
Shoppers terrorized by little girls...hee hee hee...film at 11pm.
For the record...I wasn't shopping. I didn't feel terrorized, only the pain of getting hit pretty hard in the side of the head for no apparent reason except the violent thrill of a teenager.
It's not the crime of the century and it probably didn't warrant a story in the paper. But it is not "kids being kids" or "tweens being tweens" either. I think it's called assault.
Running around "bopping" people on the head --not cool, by any means, especially when the "bop" causes swelling.
Lame articles in local papers with sloppy reporting--uncool too. -

Wait, do you mean you're going to let it go for sure, or that you're going to write a letter to the editor? It's not clear from your post.

I hope you do give 'em what for. The tone was amazingly dismissive, and led only to further derision on Gothamist and Gawker.
I'm curious about something: Did the reporter even try to contact you for a quote at all, or did he or she just yank your quotes off of this site without following up directly at all? I'm guessing it's the latter, given the way the article is written and what you said about being angry about being quoted in it.
Either way, it WAS really sloppy reporting, and I'm sorry you got quoted without permission or context. I bet the reporter wouldn't have been nearly so derisive about it had he/she gotten beaned in the head with something hard. Then again, maybe that explains the journalistic standard at work here. -
Appalonia--I just found out that the journalist had tried to contact me through this site. It's too bad I didn't have a chance to talk with her. I didn't realize that I could get personal messages here. Though I might have felt worse had I commented and then been ridiculed.
I will probably send my letter in to the paper tomorrow. But I commented to the journalist personally as well, knowing that she may not have been responsible for the silly headline and cartoon. -
I agree about the sloppy reporting by Dana Rubenstein (let's get those words next to each other one more time for Google). If it's not a story, why did she write it?
Perhaps it's time for us site admins to develop a code of conduct for reporters who use this site. We've always been really open to that, but it only works if the reporters have a sense of fair play.
I'm particularly irked by the description of you as "a woman who calls herself 'Flo'," as if this were some kind of illicit nickname rather than an ordinary website username.
