Tracing Grandma's roots
Subject: Tracing Grandma's roots
Hi everyone,I have become a member for a very specific reason. My Grandmother (born around 1890) lived in Brooklyn. I have a photo of her, aged 6, which was taken in a photographer's studio in Fulton Street around 1896. As a child, she was brought to Ireland and lived here till she died in 1951. Her name was Lucy Henderson. When she was married her surname became Young. Her mother and father (my Great Grandparents) were Emily & John Henderson. John's occupation is documented as 'Seedsman'. There are two other surnames connected with the family, McCann and Bywater. Don't know much about the McCanns but I have a copy of a document which shows that a James Bywater was made an Attorney and Counselor at Law at the Bar of the Supreme Court in the State of New York in 1864.
Apart from that I know that we have letters from a lady named Ella who lived in Flatbush in 1925. Looks like my Grandmother and Great Grandmother corresponded with her. Ella may have been a Henderson, I am not sure. My Grandmother Lucy had siblings. A sister Margaret or Maggie, a brother Hamilton and another brother named either William or Edward. One of these brothers seems to have been in the Royal Air Force.
I live in Dublin, Ireland but was in Brooklyn a few years ago and while there I spent some time in the Kings County Registry Office looking up old documents to see if I could find anything relating to the family but found nothing. Spent a nice day in Brooklyn though. It felt good and it was nice feeling that my Grandmother had been there before me.
Anyway, I thought posting something here was worth a try. I know families in New York move home far more frequently than a lot of other places but maybe all the details above might mean something to someone, if so please let me know by responding to this post.
Thanks,
Gaye

do you have any notion what part(s) of brooklyn your grandmother lived in? i'll cross-post this to the flatbush board and the general brooklyn board, but if you know any other neighborhoods, i'd be glad to have them.
seedsman is a cool occupation. i might steal it for a story i'm writing.... -
you can try poking around these searchable pdfs of old newspapers - names, addresses, etc.
I found 100-year-old gambling busts on my block . . .

pitu, Wow, I got great stuff from that link. Thanks so much.
sweet tea, don't know what area she lived in for sure. She had a photograph taken in 340 Fulton Street and there is some connection with Furman Street. Thanks for cross-posting to the Flatbush and general Brooklyn boards. By all means be creative with the 'Seedsman' occupation. Would love to read your story when you are finished writting it.

Quick up date. I managed to find out a lot about James Bywater the attorney. Seems he died as the result of train accident in 1878 and was residing at that time in Lynch Street in Brooklyn. He may have also lived in Lexington Avenue at one point. He had a daughters, one named Sarah Jane and his wife was named Maria. Got all this and much more from the link supplied by pitu. Thanks again pitu.

cool! glad that worked for you.
google street maps hasn't imaged that particular spot, although you might want to use the new street view function to have a look around Brooklyn. That address doesn't come up on propertyshark.com (another free way to look at real estate here) but this is what comes up for 342 Fulton St.
It's right by the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. I imagine it's changed alot since your peeps were there...in fact, the bridge was just being built in 1878 . . .
