Curly hair -- Rudy at Fez? — Brooklynian

Curly hair -- Rudy at Fez?

It's way past time for me to get a haircut, but I just can't stand to pay 100+ in Manhattan any more. I've seen a couple recs for Rudy at Fez, but it didn't seem like any of those were from people with wavy/curly, layered hair. I like a natural style; I usually put some "stuff" in and let it air dry as it will, so I need someone who won't insist on a style that requires attention.

Is Rudy good at that? Or is there someone else in the Slope who's aces at it?

I've been to Chandelier, btw, and wasn't impressed by either the work or the vibe. Seemed like a tense attitude in the air, and the owner(?) and other employees were angrily dishing some ex-employee as I sat in the chair. They seemed more interested in their personal drama than in their customers. Very unprofessional, I thought.

  • as a fellow curly girl, i can only tell you that i go to jersey to get my hair cut. the same couple has been cutting my hair for 20+ years, and it's worth the 45 minute drive and the $60 price tag.

there's that woman in the city who wrote the book about curly hair, "curly girl" i think. but i think her salon is expensive.

certainly we are blessed with the hair, but it comes with a price.
  • I've been going to "Texas" (that's her name) at Slope Suds on 7th ave. and around 15th st. She understands the curly/frizzy thing.
  • I am looking for a new haircutter and am a curly head. The person who does my hair is hit or miss and the last few cuts were misses. I was wondering if anyone has found a link to some curly short hairstyles I could mull over to change the look. Also hope other people have recommendations cause I don't..lol
  • There's that Deva salon in the city, but they're not cheap. They're supposed to be curly hair experts.
  • I have super super curly/frizzy hair and I go to Rudy at Fez. Definitely the best cut I've had in some time. He does his best not to give you "triangle" hair, and even though I usually pay the extra to get my hair blown straight, he usually styles it curly to let me see and hardly puts any product in my hair. And let's put it this way, I used to rarely wear my hair down without some sort of clip in it, hairsray, tons of product etc. . . now au natural.
  • sjknoll, you said the words that strike fear into my heart: triangle hair! Good to know that Rudy is aware of the danger.

Brooklynpotter, I think you are referring to Ouidad. I went to her salon for most of the 90s, but she has a signature "look," which you can see here:
The Ouidad Look. My hair refuses to do that, even in the salon. Besides, it requires a LOT of proprietary Ouidad hair goop to get that proprietary Ouidad look, and I like my hair to feel pretty soft (vs goopy or stiff).

The stylists try to mold everyone's hair to that signature look, regardless of its texture or curl. I remember asking them not to glop stuff in my hair, to go easy with the gels and lotions. They'd say okay, and then gloop about a half-cup of stuff in there before I could stop them. And no matter how many times I told them that I wasn't gonna blow dry my hair every morning, they'd tell me they would show me how to do it and it would only take a minute to accomplish (false -- it was a ritual of hand motions and turning upside-down that would have had me exhausted before I even got to brushing my teeth).

I finally realized that it's silly to go to a salon that's world-famous for a certain look if that's not the look you want. Plus, they were so expensive I had to go 6 mo between haircuts, and I'd look like hell for the last two months. I will say this: Some of their products rock. I still use them.

Anyway, it's good to know I'm not the only mop-head in need of a reliable stylist in the Slope.
  • The thing with Deva Salon is that they are anti-shampoo. Seriously, they will (try to) sell you on their "No Poo" product, which is greasy and smells like patchouli. After a few months of it I just had to go back to Pantene.

The owner of Chandelier totally butchered my hair once, and I refuse to go back to her. Nowadays I like Stella at Michael's on 7th Ave. Not as cheap as she used to be but she is a curly girl herself so she gets it.
  • I went to Rudy at Fez for my first time a couple of months ago. For your reference, my hair is curly near my forehead and ends and wavy near my scalp. I loved the layered cut he gave me. Nice shape au natural or straightened. I'm definitely planning on going back.

The price was quite reasonable, too--under $60.
  • Janelle at Le Chandeleir is awesome. She gets how to cut curly hair. I have long hair and it was only $45 for a cut
  • Ugh, I hate that "no poo" crap!

My spiral curls are from root to tip and I've tried so many stylist in the slope, most of which have no idea about the shrinkage (spelling?) after the hair dries but I finally found this lady who understands my hair.
I forget her name since I haven't gone to her in a minute but I know she works in the salon on 13street and 7th ave. Not the one on the corner, but the one a couple doors down. I usually see her in the chair closest to the window, she's a big woman with short brown hair. Last time I got a wash & cut for $35.
  • the woman i was referring to is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Curly-Girl-Lorraine-Massey/dp/0761123008

don't think it's the ouidad woman, but i just don't get all of this not washing your hair thing.
  • I am Le Spiral too. I just trim it myself, and use very expensive product from Aveda to make up the difference.
I can highly recommend their Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade for styling (if your hair is Black or Mediterranean hearty and can take some grease,) the Shampure shampoo, and if you can stomach the outrageous $$$ the "damage remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment" - that stuff is awesome.
I'd rather spend the $100 on lots of product than on the cut, in the case of the curly locks . . .

In the category of the over$50 cut, Xena on 13th St in Manhattan does good curly, especially the owner but everybody there is on to the curly thing according to my friend.
  • the john frieda products aren't bad; don't much care about frizz-ease, but "dream curls" is like magic in a bottle. alas, none of it smells as good as the aveda
  • Dont go to Devachan (which you wont because its in Manhattan and expensive). The woman who owns it wrote the curly girl book. (and the place is now full of tourists who travel to get their hair cut there. It takes months to get a slot).

I got some great cuts there many years ago but in the last 3-4 years it has gotten too expensive and you spend like 3 hours there while they have different people wash, dry, style your hair. You see the actual hair cutter/stylist for all of 10 or 15 minutes and then you spend a fortune, AND there are half a dozen people to tip. Including the girl who "checks" your clothes and gives you the robe to wear. Nonsense. Plus the cuts have gone down in quality.

all that said, I have v. curly hair and know how awful a bad cut can be and would thus appreciate the recommendations!
  • I love Rudy, have been getting my wavy-to-frizzy hair cut by him for a couple of years now. I'm very specific about my bangs, and he's the only one I'll trust with them - he practically cuts them with a slide rule. I randomly stumbled on him at Chandelier, and then followed him to Fez. He's also a sweetheart.
  • There's one woman at Devachan who cuts all types of hair (including mine, which is not curly - it was a bizarre mild wave to it that makes it do absolutely nothing except lean a little to the right). Her name is Judy. I go to her when I'm flush - it's about $50 for just a regular cut.

I agree completely about the No-Poo - they sold it (not Judy, but one of the colorists) to me and as I say, my hair's not even curly. I used it twice and looked like a 13-year-old with oily hair. Bleah.

One other non-curly client of theirs: Susan Sontag. That same colorist who did my hair once told me that he did hers as well. Apparently that famous grey streak she had going was...not entirely natural.

Like they say, only your hairdresser knows for sure.
  • Wait - is this Rudy formerly of Le Chandelier? He is the one who convinced me to let my grey grow out and it's been fabulous. I get more compliments - and often from young men! It's been totally liberating and I thank him for giving me the courage and cut to do it. Since he left I've gone back to Lisa and she's done a great job too. I'm curly but I blow out - the curls turn to total frizz when dry, though both Rudy and Lisa loved it, I'm more comfortable with it straight.
  • Yeah, same guy. He opened his own place on 5th called Fez. It's really nice.
  • To all those who recommended Rudy: Thank you so much! I finally got my cut. The man rocks. He interpreted my hair completely differently from the way anyone else ever has -- and he got it right! He really understands the curl, ladies. And he is such a sweetheart and made me feel so comfortable.

A good deal, and so close to home! Heaven! Add my name to the list of Rudy-ettes.
  • I am so going to Fez - and back to Rudy -now. More compliments on my silvering hair today from co-workers. It just gets better as it grows out. People actually say I look younger! I might even go back to curly too!
  • where is Fez?
  • Has any curly girl gotten their hair cut by Patti of Salon Bohemia? I
I've also been looking into curly hair cutters in the slope and saw some good reviews for her as well.

Its between her or Rudy. :)
  • i went to texas at slope suds. in 30 years she was the ONLY person who's cut my hair other than my regular person in jersey. i was TOTALLY satisfied. she was great. the cut was great.
  • Awesome! How much did that cost you?

    Now I have 3 options....who to choose.... :?:
  • $65, but they take credit cards. and whatever they used to wash my hair, and the gel, i've never smelled so fabulous.
  • I'm tempted to try them out since they're so close by. If I do I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks for the recommendation, BP. Texas did a great job fixing my hair from the last cut and was a pleasure to chat with. So glad I checked them out after walking by there for the last two years!
  • a friend of mine cuts my hair - he's been doing it for years and works out of alphabet city. he's the first person to cut my hair the way I wanted AND make it look good. I love him PM me for his number
