A walk to meet the neighborhood

lemlar,
first, thanks for your support of my previous post...but this time you should recognize that this post was meant to be for the most part funny. i wasn't joking about the investment part though.
it's just a car.
the fact of the matter is that there is a preponderance of subarus in the neighborhood now. just like all the restaurants, bars and shops, i know they weren't here several years ago. a fair number of them have out of state plates so the assumption that they are newcomers is valid. i never said anything about newcomers being a good or bad addition to the neighborhood. i'm just stating the facts as i see them. there's no ill will towards anyone.
for the record, i never made any reference to the race/gender/nationality/sexual orientation of the those that are new to the neighborhood and/or driving subarus. they could be white/black/asian/latino, rich/poor, soccer moms/teachers/DJs/bartenders/investment bankers... whatever... i just said they were part of the gentrification process and a lot of them drive subarus. is that offensive? for better or worse, is gentrification not a reality in the neighborhood?
that being said, i really am interested to know why i'm seeing them all the sudden. is that stereotyping? i got interested in nintendo after seeing how many wii's they sold at christmas. i asked around and found out kids AND adults love them. i bought the stock and made 50% in six months. same story but even better numbers with apple and the ipod. same story with toyota and the prius. i try to follow consumer trends and capitalize on identifying them early. i probably missed the boat on this one but my post wasn't written to disparage anyone. i gotta figure out some way to come up with that $400,000 down payment for a brownstone...
this time you may be reading too much into my post... i feel like i need a lawyer to review my writing before i post it... you must drive a subaru
and i know it's not fair, but black people can have it both ways
just joking...sort of -

That may be a tad bit harsh. Of all of the cars that my friends drive, the two subarus in the crowd belong to two black guys. One has a Legacy, because he likes the space, styling, and he goes skiing alot so he needed AWD, the other has a WRX because he is a speed demon  I'll give Carlton the benefit of the doubt on this one because all sorts of people are driving Subarus these days, including black people.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: I have noticed a lot of black people driving Saab's lately. I am not sure what this means, except that they are nice cars, somewhat pricier than I think they should be though. Does this count as evidence of genrification? Probably, but who the heck knows. They sure as hell aint popular in the thug crowd

thanks for the support but again i never mentioned anyone's race. i know black people who would qualify as gentrifiers. i'm considering buying a audi myself.

Thats right. You didnt mention race. I was just having a bit of fun, which I gather was the intent behind your OP. BTW, the three Audis in my circle of friends all belong to black guys too!
An A4, A4 Wagon, and an A6. All AWD. -

Carlton, I know your post was jokey, but still . . . and let's not be so legalistic: it's true you didn't actually identify any race/gender/nationality, etc. but you did refer to a "certain crowd". if you want to pretend there's no "type" in this "certain crowd", go ahead and pretend but i think what you meant was clear.
in fact, i think the last line of your original post pretty much sums up where you're coming from.
actually, i think there should be a thread titled "Race and Gentrification" and we should thereafter prohibit reference to those issues on all other threads. way too many of the threads on this site devolve into such discussions because, in my opinion, there are a handful of people who always drive the discussions in that direction. -

That's actually what I had hoped people would use the Sandbox thread for... -
sorry for my ignorance, but what's the "sandbox" thread?

Somewhere further down the list there's a thread called "Welcome to the Sandbox," which I started on a day when I was sick to the back teeth of so many of the discussions devolving into debate because people were acting like six-year-olds fighting in a sandbox over who got to use the red dump truck first.
I'd seen another board elsewhere use one, and people would switch to that thread if they were getting into a big debate with another poster.
Although, the mods here did say that they didn't have anything like that usually, but they'd see what happened with this one...
