MTA Service Cuts
Oh man, I sure hope this doesn't happen. According to this article, the MTA is planning substantial service cuts to both buses and subways. As an example, during peak hours subways would only come once every 10 minutes. Can you imagine the crowds? God awful, just when ridership was up and safety had improved.
Now, as much as I would love to pin this on the TWU, the article says that the real culprit is debt payments that are coming due, which should be a lesson to legislators everywhere. This city and state has been paying for things it can't afford (and are often better left alone) for decades by borrowing. Bloomberg deserves credit recently for using budget surpluses to try and pay down some debt, but the avalanches of debt that are coming will force the city to make some tough choices.
I can't resist plugging the fact that, in light of the projected shortfalls, the TWU's demands were especially outrageous and unwarranted. I will also say that I for one would rather see the fare go to $4 a ride than see the cutbacks that are proposed in this article.

It's called incompetence. Mixed with a solid dose of dishonesty. -
in chicago, they do this same little dance every time they want to raise fares. thoughts?
also, why do nyc buses suck so much? they're much worse than chicago's, and that's pathetic. the buses in chicago also breakdown and drive like maniacs (although the only accident i was ever in while riding a bus was not the bus driver's fault. i think.), but at least they COME once in a great while. -
Kalikow is supposedly against the fare hike, so it is off the table for now. See this NY-1 story:

HAHA! spoken like someone who always has to wait for the.. B67? B69? B77? which one, sweet tea?
i have nothing but expletives to describe my personal relationship with the B67, which is truly unfortunate since i'm someone who enjoys riding above ground and watching out the window if i have some extra time. but that line does nothing but frustrate the [bleep] out of me! -
I was glad to see Kalikow come out against the cuts, but you have to wonder what the solution will be. Something's gotta give, after all. I'd give anything to see the spreadsheets and powerpoint slides that were rolled out however many years ago to convince creditors to lend these funds that are now coming do--without a doubt they showed projected revenues ballooning up into the clouds, and assured the investors that the idea of a shortfall was beyond ridiculous. And yet all these cities and states around the country seem so shocked when suddenly they realize they have to pay back their debt. I guess that's what happens when you know the problems you create now will have to be solved by an administration that comes 20 years down the road.
