  • Hi, I like it and think it is a great are. I am surprised it is not talked about as much as the other parts of Brooklyn. It is not that bad commute (especially downtown), and there is a ferry from 59th st that gets to Wall St in 15 minutes.

It is a safe area, lots of bars and restaurants to try. Take a look down there, along 3rd ave in the 70s, 80s and 90s - lots of nice places.
  • It used to be mostly an Irish area, although that's changing a lot as more immigrant families move there, especially Chinese. It's politically one of the more conservative areas of the city. The neighborhood is very family-friendly, and there are a ton of restaurants and bars. It's definitely the kind of place where you'll get to know most of the people on your block. It's also a pretty safe neighborhood (relatively speaking).

If you're thinking of moving there, you should spend some time walking around the neighborhood. Stop into a bar or restaurant and talk to some of the people there.

There's also a message board devoted specifically to the nabe:

Has the best burgers in NYC. It is housed in a former ice cream parlor. Well worth a visit.

Actually, the neighborhood used to be mainly Italian (although there were a lot of Irish) but now Muslims and Chinese are moving in.

There are (and have been) both Italians and Irish there, but I'd argue that the character of Bay Ridge is more Irish, while Bensonhurst is more Italian. I agree about the recent Muslim immigrants in addition to the Chinese. All of these communities have helped make Bay Ridge a really interesting neighborhood.
  • Irish and Italian... well, it use to be a very Norwegian area as well. They still have the Norwegian Day Parade every year in May and there at least 2 Norwegian deli's still around.

I live there and the muslims are mainly up on 5th around 65th to 72nd or so. Well, they are in other parts but up on 5th aroudn 65th it really looks like a little Pakistan with stores with Islamic writing on the windows.

Walking around I hardly see many chinese at all, at least down in the 80s and 90s along 3rd (except for the chinese take out and a few nail salons... ).

I would say it is a very safe area.
  • I just moved from Bay Ridge to Crown Heights (perhaps regretting the move, but that's another story). I lived on 85th St. @ 4th Ave. for a year. It's a great neighborhood. Very family friendly and very safe. There are tons of great restaurants, bars, and clubs along 3rd ave. You're also really close to Century 21.

The down sides are that it can be quite a commute, especially late. The few times that I headed home from Midtown at midnight or one in the morning it would take me a good hour and 15 minutes. You're also not close to any nice parks or beaches. There's a walk way on Shore Rd. along the coast, but it's right next to the freeway so it's generally noisy, dirty, and unkept. Sunset Park is 15 minutes away, and Prospect Park and Coney Island are 30 minutes away. Plus it's often jokingly referred to as a retirement community. I would say the demographics definitely skew towards the older side.

I would definitely check it out though.
  • I just moved to Bay Ridge after 16 yrs in Park Slope. Still getting a feel for the neighborhood, but I love the quiet, the people, the great food. It's so much cleaner here too. I'm near 4th Ave in the mid 70s so it's a little bit of a trek to the parks by the water, but so nice to smell the salt in the air when you get there.

And I agree that the late night and weekend commute sucks. It's double the time and trouble it takes on weekday days, when I've gotten to the upper west side in 45 min. But I work at home :-)
  • i love bay ridge but its too god damn far in :o. i shouldn't complain cause i'm in bensonhurst now lol.
  • Bay Ridge is cool if you're brain dead
  • Bay Ridge is very nice, but more "old fashioned" kinda, I dont think it's "hip" for a young person.
It does take a while to get into the city, the R train is local. If you have a car, parking is horrendous (sp). But as far as looks, the homes and apartments are kept well, and it doen not look like a slum in no way whatsoever.
86th and 4th has great shopping.
  • Bay ridge is nice except for the "crack house" located at 346 93rd street. Watch out for a young looking 30 year old crack head named mike
