[preamble: talking plain by the slice old pizza here, not fancy brick oven gourmet pizza.]
Love Roma but live too far from it. Pino's and Smiling are OK. Down in my neck of the woods, Friends has repeatedly done me good.
I like my plain old pizza with a fairly thin crust (must be crispy), and not too much cheese (must not be burnt). -
of all the 7th avenue locals, pino's is best.
no frou-frou pizza here. decent thin crust, not too sweet sauce, enough cheese and never too much grease. also fast delivery.
smiling just hasn't worked as late. -
South Slope:
- IMHO Lenny's has gone down in quality lately--and shortened their hours to boot.
- Joe's is good and does brisk late night business thanks to Commonwealth and Royale patrons.
- Smiling on 9th St & 7th Ave was pretty good, but I haven't had it in ages.
I had an OK slice at "the corner spot right where you get out of the bergen 2/3 stop next to bergen bagels" and at Luigi's as well but both were a while back. -
LENNY'S
PINTO'S
SMILEY'S
As for ROMA'S, my sister went there once and their was cockaroches walking over the pizzas, so she walked out never had a desire to return.
As for the bread, almost any bakery has them. I usually can it at REGINA BAKERY on PROSPECT AVE and PROSPECT PARK WEST -
Subject: Pizza
Pizza Plus on 7th Ave. between 10th and 11th has reopened. Beautiful new decor and same delicious pizza and more. Of course, they deliver! -
Subject: good pizza
I would say any of the old school pizza shops do well ... each has their own distinct taste, but the same general NY style. The best I've ever tasted is probably the one on 10/11 and 5th.
Smile's on 9th street and 7th avenue is quintessential NY pizza ... on a cold rainy day, a hot piece on a plate w/oregano is bliss. Always good, been there forever ...

I went to Lenny's after reading this thread--two burnt slices later...you'll find me back at Pino's and Smiling.

My blood post got eaten... Anyway, there're lots of people who agree and lots who disagree with me on this one.. I like La Bruschetta on 7th ave and 5th st. Really friendly staff, and it's a great convenient quick slice of cheese. I'm a vegetarian, but I'm told that the meat toppings are a bit hit or miss; some of them are great, some of them aren't bad, but not really great either.

Best pizza I've ever had was in Providence RI.
Bob & Timmy's Grilled Pizza
or Al Forno - for the upscale version
