Is it possible there is real ROTI on Fifth Ave? — Brooklynian

Is it possible there is real ROTI on Fifth Ave?

yeah . . . more things to eat on 5th Ave
A West Indian take-away shop!

I don't know the name and I'm not even sure of the block - more or less it's across from the school, so 3rd St-ish - but I did notice they had opened. But I wasn't hungry.
Is it possible there is real roti in short walking distance now?

It's painted a deep bubble gum pink inside, and weirdly reminded me of that candy store that closed further North on Fifth Ave.

Anybody know?
:D

There's also a new Jamaican place on the North end of Fifth Ave, but I don't think they're up yet.

  • There used to be one on 7th....but they've been closed for awhile.

There is a new pink store down here that's ice cream and yogurt. As for roti, aside from Stir it Up on Atlantic we are SOL.
  • It's not walking distance but I went to a roti shop on 3rd Avenue somewhere around the high 30's. It's pretty good.

This place has been in progress forever. Jeeze, like a year now?
But I'm excited about this other new place. Is it by the Gate? or further down towards the Chip Shop?

I had a good roti at this place in Downtown Brooklyn, it was listed on the Time Out cheap eats. I'll try to find the name for you guys when I get home.
  • It's, er, somewhere between The Gate and the Chip Shop.
Closer to the Gate, I think. But that's the side of the street . . .

I like Ali's, and some other places that are not local.
Just wondering about this one. And that North end Jamaican.

Stir It Up isn't too far down Atlantic, and it's good -- really good for vegetarians.
    And Sugarcane is on Flatbush.
And The Islands is in Prospect Heights.
  • I went.
It's on Fifth Ave between 4th and 5th Streets. Easy to miss - it's next to the new hot dog place, which is also pretty easy to miss. It's open at lunch, and I don't know how late they are open at night. Take out only.

It was good, especially when you apply the pepper sauce and brown tamarindy chunky stuff she gives you on the side!
Chicken, goat, and vegetable are the roti options. They also have mac and cheese, and baked chicken. The lemonade is made with real lemons, and it's kinda sweet.

The best thing: it's close by.
    :D
    yeah!

C'mon on, I barely got the location! It's so nondescript that I didn't see it from across the avenue, had given up on finding it and called my lunchdate to reroute to Bonnie's.
    :wink::D
  • Is this not the place that started as a little bakery? And pardon my stupidity, I've heard of a roti but never eaten one. Please describe...
  • Hi bookistan!
    Please describe...
I believe the "roti" part is the wrapper - the tortilla of the west indies.
What people generally are referring to when they go for roti is yellow curry stew (veg, goat, or chicken, usually potato is in there somewhere) with this flatbread (is it chick pea flour?) either on the side, or put together like a burrito.

The other big roti point of discussion is whether Trini or Guyanese is best.
    :D

Yes, the place is a little bakery and candy shop. Check it out!
