is it safe there??

you dont want to live there
Trust me -
I knew a couple of young families who moved out to Sheepshead Bay when Park Slope started getting pricey. This was over 10 years ago, and I didn't keep in touch with them, so I don't know if they were happy there. My impression is it's kinda like Bay Ridge -- middle-class, traditional, low crime, pretty by the water. Might be worth a look.

I grew up in Manhattan Beach (right off Brighton Beach).
I lived there till 4 years ago.
Its nothing like Bay Ridge.
Sheapshead Bay, Brighton Beach are NOT low crime areas, the school SUCK, its an hour into Manhattan by way of the Q train, and its not as pretty as it is when yiu just visit. Brighton is FILTHY! -
I actually LOVE my neighborhood! I live in Manhattan Beach, can walk the beach ALONE at 2am with no fear, Brighton Beach (the main strip) smells like New Orleans in the summer from all the produce markets, but it is cleaner than alot of nyc areas! And the Goumet marts are 1/2 or 3/4 the price of the same style markets in Manhattan. The commute to Manhattan IS long, but not so bad on the b train. And we have yards, trees, gardens, like anywhere spend a day or two walking the exact neighborhood in which you want to live, come at night as well.
I wouldn't think of moving from this area, we really love it here. -
I like the B train, and I wish it ran on weekends.

I must agree with the Guest, although parking is a nightmare. I ahve an inkling that this Guest has two very large pitbulls that she takes along for her nightly beach excursions. Brighton is relatively safe - food is best in all of U.S. of A and cheaper too. Public schools are a crying shame and disgusting exhibit of corrupt gvm't that Hell would every witness - true on Brighton Beach.
For a young couple I would not recommend it - it's a culture shock - this isn't Maplewood or some socker-mom burb. It's spicy and nothing like that Woody Allen movie - that's dead and gone - like Bensonhurst.
Bensonhurst is a good place for a young couple, but try to find a place closer to subway stations - it's a horror to get to one in winter. -
Brooklyn was named the most paved-over place in the United States in a study to be published today in the Science Journal.
An analysis conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey shows Brooklyn has only 4,000 cubic meters of unpaved space per person.
This is not a competition that any community wants to win -- the title comes with serious impacts to water quality and environmental health.
Yuk, Brooklyn has changed for the worse! The Brighton Beach area is filthy!
If you want to live in Russia I guess you will find what you are looking for there. The Russians are taking over Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach and probably a great deal of most Brooklyn neighborhoods. They do not assimilate, they have just moved their Russian cities here. I'm heading out to Oregon in a few weeks and even if I do not relocate there, I sure as hell will never live in Brooklny again. -

Somehow Brooklyn will have to find a way to move on without you.

but Brooklny may never be the same.

I just gotta comment on this

"If you want to live in Russia I guess you will find what you are looking for there." -----
------ Russia has more unpaved space than the Rain Forest, it's gorgeous and has changes tremendously over the past decade. But how wuld you know what it looks like
"The Russians are taking over Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach and probably a great deal of most Brooklyn neighborhoods."-----
---- INVADERS!!! Like in that movie "Alien Nation" huh? Big ugly with bears ambling along on a chain. Wherever did all the WASP's had gone to? It's a NIGHT-MARE!!!
"They do not assimilate, ----
--- N'yet!!! Vee djast kennot bee laik you, and not eat borscht. Sorry.
"they have just moved their Russian cities here. " ----- Yez, in tze 1700 handredz ve named a taut in Pennisivania Moscow and anozer taun in Floorida St. Petersburg, zen after ze bottle of ze Alamo ve named one taun in Texas, cold it Odessa. Zen some guy from ze government showed-up and he buy Alaska, lock, stock, and barrel. Then there vaz this guy, Kostushko, from Ukraine, zey named some bridge after ziz guy. And Brighton Beach, it vaz a slum in 1970's with all those "other" russian-jews, we only made it dirty because of all the businesses we open, sorry.
"I'm heading out to Oregon in a few weeks" -- DOSVIDANIYA!!! When you get to Portland, the neighborhoods by Portland Harbor, say hello to my good friend Boris and Igor and Lyudmila - they own many gas tations and restaurants and the gommunity is as big as Brighton, only no overhaead subway tracks
But don't despair, zes is good for environment.
"... and even if I do not relocate there, I sure as hell will never live in Brooklny again." --- MAZEL TOv!!! More unpaved space per person then!!

More like Red Dawn.

WOLVERINES!!! -
Live with the wolves, howl like the wolves. Or, sont go to the forest. We learned our ways in part from our very welcoming neighboors.

I have to agree with the poster that said that most of these immigrants in Brooklyn do not assimilate. I have experienced this first hand several times. Talk about rude!!!!! There might be pockets of immigrants in every city of the U.S. but after just returning from the West Coast, I can honestly say that the concentration of these immigrants is a hell of a lot less and more tolerable. I also will be leaving for good and they can have Brooklyn now. By the way, Brighton Beach is still a slum and will remain that way. The other neighborhoods are getting pretty filthy too thanks to the ignorant, immigrants that do not understand ecology and that tree beds are not for rubbish.
-
You might want to look at Marine Park. Very short drive to Coney and Brighton but more family friendly. I work in Coney and Brighton and totally love it but I do agree with all the other posters.

I live in Gerritsen Beach (which is nearby,) and it a perfect little neighborhood for families. It is very different from Park Slope (it is a 2 fare zone - well not really 2 fares anymore - you have to take the bus to the train,) and you will need a car in this area. The neighorhood has one of the best public schools in Brooklyn (PS 277), and has plenty of open space (one whole side of Gerritsen Beach is park land.) The neighborhood used to be a summer bungalo community that eventually transformed into a full year living area. The streets are very small (with the streets in the old section, the area further down Gerritsen Avenue, that do not have sidewalks.) I don't think there's a place in Brooklyn that does not have parking issues, but I have to say, 8 times out of 10 I park my car right outside my house. The other 2 times, I park right down the block.
The area is very safe, and I am never afraid to go out walking at night.
I cannot comment on Brighton Beach for I do not know much about it.
My sons play Ice hockey in Coney Island, and there are weeks when I am at the hockey rink 5 nights a week. I never feel unsafe there.
I hope I have been able to help you. -
i'd say the area became safer after the cyclones stadium opened in 2001. also right after that the whole amusement park started becoming really popular again and that helped the area get safer. but i have friends who live and grew up there and none of them ever really liked it. they always complain its boring
-
If you have a family, move to the suburbs, your kids will thank you.
-
I guess that's why I haven't been to the "old haunts" in years! I want to rember them the way they were
-
Marine Park is still hanging in as a middle class enclave but the demographics are starting to change esp. from an influx of orthodox Jews who don't assimilate at all. Gerritsen Beach is a bit of an acquired taste but it is mostly middle class with a few scattered crazies about i.e Westie types that you don't want to mess with.
Old Mill Basin & Flatlands are still middle class but are becoming more and more diverse. A small uptick in crime & a larger uptick in noise & traffic congestion.
A problem in all these neighborhoods is the city continues to allow the willy nilly tearing down of single family homes that are replaced by multifamily units. -

Oh HELL no! My family moved from Jackson Heights to Northern NJ in 1966 because someone gave us that very same advice. I can't speak for Long Island, but New Jersey is far dirtier than any section of Brooklyn. The town we lived in, Waldwick, had two Superfund sites, and the water, unbeknownst to us was contaminated to the point where over 25% of the people I grew up with have had either Cancer or severe gastrointestinal problems. If you live in Brooklyn or the other Boroughs, at least you know that your water is among the top 10 in the country for quality.
As for assimilated foreigners, you'll find them in almost any neighborhood now. It's no longer like in my grandparent's time where families made a concerted effort to be "real Americans". In my neighborhood in Bensonhurst, we've had an influx of Chinese, and you'd be hard pressed to find a store that has signs in English. Go to Sunset Park, and everything is in Spanish. Brighton Beach, Russian. Immigrants aren't bad people, though, everyone comes from somewhere unless you're a Native American! -
Subject: sheepshead bay is safe
Hi,
I live here since I'm 11 years old and the area is safe. My mom works till midnight and takes the train home every night and so does my husband. Some areas are a little better than others, however, the beach is close, many train lines, parking is reasonable, and there is a tone of stuff to do for kids. I love this area of Brooklyn. It's a bit far from Manhattan but the rent is cheaper and real estate is a bit cheaper than in Williamsburg or Park Slop.
You should just come our way and visit. -
