  • Police tell CBS 2 HD that a woman was allegedly attacked inside Prospect Park early Friday morning.

Police said that shortly after 1 a.m., a woman was sexually assaulted inside the southwest section of Prospect Park near 16th Street.

Police are looking for a man wearing a blue shirt.

Eyewitness News is told a large number of police officers quickly descended on the park, staging at one entrance and using a light truck to illuminate the crime scene. The rapid response greeted early morning parkgoers.

Prospect Park was the third most violent of the city's 20 largest parks, with 25 major crimes reported between April 1 and Sept. 30, 2006.

  • Not to blame the victime but hangin out at the PP ballfields at 2AM sounds like a bad idea.

And yes, we are talking about crime here. Apologies to all those who disapprove of such things.

i agree but let's wait to hear the full story. we don't know the facts yet.

We haven't let that stop us before, and we're not about to start now.

agreed, and an unfortunate fact of life.
  • “Well, two o’clock in the morning. Even though the concert ended about 10, 10:30, no one should be at two o’clock in the morning in the park,” said another. “It’s not a safe time.”

  • I wouldn't want to be in the park that late either, but from time to time and for one reason or another we all find ourselves places that we probably shouldn't be.
    Let's hope they catch him.
  • just moved here from the city..........is park slope really dangerous?
my landlord told me i dont need to install a security system, and that its very safe.
    This makes me nervous.....
  • Nubnu.. What "City" did you move here from? If you are referring to Manhattan then PS is still in THE SAME City and is as safe or as dangerous as you perceive it. So .. don't follow your Landlord's advice..The fact that you even pose the question tells me that you would be more comfortable with additional security for your apartment. Be sensible.. be careful.

    Love :)

    Your Mother

    p.s.

Come home I havent changes anything in your bedroom.. it awaits your return.
  • sorry, i'm always put off when someone asks if park slope is dangerous. i shouldn't be, but i am. did you not look into this before you moved??
seems odd. anyway, park slope, like every other place in the largest city in the u.s. has crime, but we are fortunate to live in one of the safer neighborhoods around. south slope maybe has a little more crime than the north, west (4th ave etc) has a little more than east, but when you've got a big expanse of parkland separating a wealthy enclave like park slope and some of the other hoods to the north and east, there will be some crime.
and as someone here said...if a woman wandering the park at 2am leads you to believe that park slope is dangerous enough to have asked that question on this board, that worries me. either you are someone wishing to stir up trouble, or you didn't do your homework before moving to park slope. and i apologize in advance if your question was completely harmless. and of course i'm not saying that the victim last night deserved anything. just want to be clear on that also.
  • however, be sure you have window guards if they're on a fire escape or at ground or first floor level.
  • Thanks Mom!

It isn't bad. Get security if you want. Since you are equating to Manhattan, would you go play in a secluded part of Central Park as a woman at 2am? Prospect isn't any worse than that, probably better, would have to check the stats. Which doesn't make the crime OK, it is just a question of putting yourself out there as a victim, and, well, not doing that. The crime exists, but you don't have to go to it. Make it come to you. Or something.
  • wow that was my 1st post on this site, and im sorry i asked.
    you guys are hardcore.................
  • when i moved here i didn't know how safe it was, and i've spent much of my adult life here. every neighborhood is different, let's not bash the newbie for asking responsible questions.

  • nubnu, welcome to the neighborhood.

Are you really sorry you asked? I don't think any of the responsed were that "hardcore"... In fact, I think the answers you got were pretty informative and helpful, considering the relative vagueness and (and slight hysteria) in your question.
  • BTW, definite yes on the window guards if you are exposed. Get an alarm if it will make you feel safer. Lock your doors. Be aware of your surroundings. It is not an unsafe place, but that doesn't mean you should wander around with your pants down.

    So to speak.

    And WELCOME!

    image
  • and lock yo doors.
  • i apologize if you think my message was hardcore. i don't agree. and in retrospect, i guess i don't have a problem with asking if park slope is dangerous, but i was put off by someone immediately overracting and asking their landlord if they should install a video camera because a woman was attacked at 2am in prospect park.

if there were a rash of said crimes, sure. but from last night's news to a few hours later posing such a question, in addition to the apologies for asking makes me feel like you need to be extra careful in this big, bad city.

    ;-)

    Stop copying me.

    - and -

When we were walking home from Brower Park the other weekend, a nice black guy encouraged my five year old to "slap him some skin". When my little guy hesitated, out of the whole "stranger" thing, rather than the "black" thing, BTW, the guy says, "Hey, don't be like that! You're in the ghetto now son!"

Lol. I about laughed my ass off. Oh, and the little guy ran over and gave him five.

Of course I am in Crown Heights, not the illustrious Park Slope, so your experience will vary.

Beware the strollers. And I hear Park Slope induces pregnancy. FYI.
  • 1010WINS chimes in.
A woman was raped in Prospect Park early Friday morning, according to police.

Officials said the woman was in the ball field area just after 1 a.m. with a friend when a man approached and said he had a gun. Police said the man then raped the woman.

Conflicting info. In other reports it was clearly stated that she WASN'T raped, but WAS sexually assaulted. Dunno. Not good news in either case, I suppose.
  • Listen up -------BELZIM + SHISHKAB
Im Brooklyn born and bred, and I wasnt being hysterical.
I just moved here to park slope and was asking a very natural question (especially for a woman who is home alone all day working).
I have always wanted to live in Park Slope, my entire childhood, especially becuz I went to high school (back in the dayz) with a bunch of kids from the slope that were extremely cool. I just wanted to know your opinion.
My landlord made it sound too safe and im not naive enough to buy it-
    Thats all babes!
  • Nubnu.. I actually had a feeling that you were a Brooklyn girl because you used the word "City" to mean Manhattan. Most of the time people raised in one of these 5 boroughs pcik up that term to mean that.

I know that you did get a little slammed with that first post but I hope you continue to read and post on this forum.. It really is a nice group of folks.. Welcome to the hood.
  • oh god- bring it on!
    im not scared.
    thank you veets!
    im glad to be here.
started hating manhattan 3 years in- could not wait to get out!
im here to stay.....love this forum......its FIERCE
