What not to eat

Plenty of people talk about where you should eat in Park Slope. My question is which restaurants should be avoided and why?

  • NoNo and Tutta Pasta. Because they use salt like it's going out of style. Sette, well they just plain suck.
  • I agree totally with Idlewild - and would add Burger Bar to the list. NoNo is just very average to very mediocre food at too high a price - Tutta is just poor pasta and Sette has nosedived ever since Amanda Freitag, the great chef they used to have, left a year ago. Also avoid the Thai restaurant on the second floor of the building on the corner of 7th and Carroll (?). And Szechhuan Delight on 7th is just awful.
  • applewood- because I have been disappointed there twice.
  • I thought Applewood was pretty good. Sette as well, BUT it has been well over a year since I've eaten there so that might well have changed. Sotto Voce...there's a place I'll never go again; ordering the mussels is an adventure that's right up there with climbing Everest or HALO jumping. Agree that Tutta Pasta does love the salt. Dizzy's had gone to hell for awhile there, so I stopped going. If that's changed let me know, because they're pretty convenient for me.
  • The Grecian [Greasy] Corner.
    'Nuff said.
  • The ones with food you hate that are out of your budget...

...plus Amin Indian and Asian Restaurant (formerly Hunan Wok) on 7th Avenue. Amin has mean waiters and Hunan Wok reheats frozen crabs in microwaves and advertises them as "fresh soft shell crabs."

If you like Indian food, Park Slope's Indian restaurants might disturb you.
  • Bogota, Los Pollitos and Fish Camp suck as well. In fact I bet you will find more suck ass awarded restaurants in the Slope than you will recommended.
  • really? i like Bogota a lot..... (sniff)

otherwise, i agree with all the places named in the thread.
  • Oh yes.. I forgot about the Fish Camp.. Ate there in the winter with 5 other people. I ordered the "whatever" oh gratin... Remember those pyrex dishes your momma made chocolate pudding in?.. Well that was the size of the serving and the little bit of seafood that was in that dish sunk to the bottom of the "ocean" (of the dish) and was covered in a pool of oil!!
I tok one bite... drank my wine and ordered another and ate a big breakfast the next day..
    Avoid.. avoid!!

I would have sresponded to this thread sooner but.. no kidding.. the lousiest restaurants Ihave eaten in in PS were so bad their very names have floated from my mind.
  • I love Applewood.

Katina's used to be horrible, even for diner food. I haven't been in there since the renovation, so maybe it has improved. But I doubt it. Bagel Hole used to be really good but now they have hard, stale, inedible bagels. Belleville was very hit-or-miss but I stopped going there so don't know how it is currently.
  • The Fuji-san group. The former Fuji-san on 1st & 7th, the Mexican place above it, Lemon Grass and Miracle Grill. Next!
  • Belleville is really lack luster on the food. The service is still sweet.. but who cares if the food isn't remarkable. There was a time when they had specials that featured seasonal dishes. Now I find their menu is small (which in and of itself isn't a negative) and of little interest.
  • And don't forget Moutarde, or rather do forget Moutarde.

I also really liked Applewood the one time I've been there so far. Bagel Hole has a a period of inconsistency, but the last time I went (about 2 weeks ago) the bagels were great.

Belleville was great when they started up, then they slipped badly for a time. They have recovered a bit, but they aren't quite back to their early level.

My two cents on the Burger Bar is that the food is okay for what it is, but the service pretty much drove me off for good. After one visit. Oh, and the violations don't help either.

I miss Snooky's for some some no-nonsense hashhouse grub.
  • Drano.. I did have a burger at the Burger Bar the week before those violations temporarily shut it down and I agree the food was not bad.. but for goodness sake it is a burger joint.... the wait person needs to come over quickly take the order and that kitchen has to turn my food out in a reasonable time and the service person needs to pick it up and get it to the table before the oil those fries met their final end in congeals on the plate...

Belville actually did fine burgers a while back.. I will try them again.
  • It is pretty easy to hit a dud meal in the slope (I am a frantic review reader since I don't want to waste time/money on a crap).

But our of curiosity, why is Aunt Suzy's still open? How in God's name does that poor excuse for a restaurant stay busy?

I don't even like "Pan Latin" food, but I like Bogota. The staff is nice, the food is tasty, and the space. The drinks are weak though.
  • Gee .. I like Aunt Susie's.. I don't eat there more than 2 times a year at most.. It never changes. Sometimes I get that urge for red sauce and chick peas in my salad and cheap red wine. That place is kind of a PS staple and Stabile after all these years.

I agree. I like it for what it is. It's a good place to go with the kids and the mother-in-law.
  • Aunt Suzies, Katina, Tutta Pasta, Sabella's Pizza (on PPW)....all majorly suck ass
  • Just moved here a few weeks back, and so far tried that poor excuse of an asian place called Na Na on 5th!
Na Na is a No No!
Tried Belleville and LOVED the eggs florentine.
Zili's on 5th (the "turkish place") had the MOST horrific food ever!
And I am a Turkish Food freak!
Hunan Delight in the corner of 6th + Union is a poor excuse for Chinese food with no flavor and bad service!
Everything else I tried was good, including Rosewater and La Taquiria and the Grandma Pie from Romas was excellent. Also Am obsessed with Russo's Italian Shop on 7th!
  • AUNT SUZIES'S SUCKS?
    REALLY?
I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING IT ONE DAY SOON.
    IT LOOKS SO CUTE THOUGH!
  • MUST ASK YOU GUYS SINCE IM A NEWBIE IN THE HOOD:
    BEST SUSHI?
    BEST SPICE STORE?
    BEST INDIAN?
    BEST BRUNCH?
  • (take your caps lock key off, newbie, and please stop shouting. thank you)
  • my opinion:

    best sushi: Blue Ribbon Sushi
    best spice store: Sahadi's
best indian: doesn't exist in the slope or surrounding 'hoods
best brunch: there are a bunch -- what do you like to eat for brunch?
  • IMHO...

    best sushi: Blue Ribbon Sushi
    best spice store: Sahadi's
    best indian: simply aren't any
    best brunch: Stone Park Cafe
  • shish+Livetotravel wrote: best sushi: Blue Ribbon Sushi

    as above
except I like takeaway from Joy just fine for Indian
and I love the cod sandwich at Fish Camp, and Pollitos is fine, what are you talking about?

I'd never eat at Aunt Suzy's (as our new zombie friend would say, GAK!) but alot of people not into all the fancy newer options love love love it, so god bless

I'd never have dinner at Beso 'cause it was awful the couple times I ate there, but breakfast is nice enough.

and I hate the owner's attitude at Bogota so I'll never go there
(they were evil bitchy jr. corporate business plan guys when they were gearing up, and I'll never forget the slagging I read one of the owners give some lady who dared to criticize a soup)
  • Not one single great Indian place?
    That is so sad-
Where is Sahadi's? I keep hearing about it?
Is Blue Ribbon the only option for fabulous Sushi?
There is no little hole in the wall AMAZING place?

Taro, and Tamari is pretty good, although their focus is not sushi

Sahadi's is on Atlantic Ave, and Google is your friend.
It is mayhem on the weekends, but the hot smoked paprika is worth it.
