Taro, and Tamari is pretty good, although their focus is not sushi
Is Blue Ribbon the only option for fabulous Sushi?
There is no little hole in the wall AMAZING place?
see the great sushi smackdown of PH

Sahadi's is on Atlantic Ave, and Google is your friend.
It is mayhem on the weekends, but the hot smoked paprika is worth it.Thank you-
So I guess Taro is the best option- from what i read on the previos park slope sushi smackdown.
Agreed? -

Hunan Delight is a poor excuse for Chinese food. Unfortunately, it's actually the best Chinese food in the neighborhood. If you want better, you've either got to head down to Sunset Park, or hop the Q three stops to Canal.
Na Na is a No No!
Tried Belleville and LOVED the eggs florentine.
Zili's on 5th (the "turkish place") had the MOST horrific food ever!
And I am a Turkish Food freak!
Hunan Delight in the corner of 6th + Union is a poor excuse for Chinese food with no flavor and bad service!
Everything else I tried was good, including Rosewater and La Taquiria and the Grandma Pie from Romas was excellent. Also Am obsessed with Russo's Italian Shop on 7th! -
I havent been to Blue Ribbon but both Taro and Tamari make good sushi thats cheap.
I just tried Tamari last night and got 3 rolls a gigantic beer and one of their japanese mojitos for 30 bucks including tip. Fed me and my gf and we were both happy.
Also there are plently of places around here I will never try because who the hell can afford to spend 30 bucks a plate when it could suck. -
Hunan Delight is the best Chinese food in the neighberhood, really?
That is so so so so sad! -
i think hunan delight is the only serviceable vegetarian chinese option in the slope, tho. agreed, folks?[/i]
oh, and i like tamari, too. but i think the original question was re: fabulous sushi, and i think blue ribbon is the best. expensive, but best (FYI to all newbies out there: when Brooklyn Restaurant Week comes around, blue ribbon always does a great, affordable spread) -

3 rolls fed you and your gf? I know I wouldn't be full if I just had 3 rolls myself.

Although I am kind of a glutton.

Arock, this was a great idea for a post.
What not to eat-
It can spawn others, like where not to shop, where not to hang out, where not to etc........ -

as we can see from the above, it depends on what you like -
the best "little hole in the wall AMAZING place" is still Bonnie's if you like great burgers and good beers and Chiles & Chocalte is fast becoming one of my fav reasonably priced places - authentic comida Mexicana - southern style. I just had a mole negro at the 7th Ave fair that's why it's on my mind.
-
how was the 7th ave fair?
we didnt go, it looked so packed with people......... -
its too hot to walk around abunch of guys frying sausage.

PS Food Coop or the Farmer's Market. The place on PPW next to Farrel's is pretty good as well. -

me, too! just tried their food for the first time. i am impressed with the complexity of that mole. they won't deliver as far down as we are, so hubby and i will simply have to make a trip up there sometime soon! yummy stuff... -

yep. United is a really good butcher, IMHO. and they have really decent fresh mozzarella (ROOM temperature, BTW, just the way it SHOULD be, so look out BoH). and i like their meatballs, too, which they sell in small as well as large sizes. -

is it better than Russo's on 7th and 11st? -
PPW 'tween 16th & Windsor Place.
in terms of better, i like United's meatballs and mozz cheese better. my hubby likes Russo's cheese better. United's has a firmer texture and is slightly more salty vs. Russo's which is milkier. -

Shishkab --------you + your hubby sound like me and my hubby.

I will try United........are they opened today?
I need to buy some beef + some mozz.
Question: How do you store left over mozz? -
i don't know their weekend hours, sorry! i live really close by, so i shop there during the week to avoid lines.
IMHO: with fresh mozz, the first day, room temp, is for eating. after that, i store it in the fridge. problem is that it becomes harder and tastes less salty, so any leftovers in the fridge are used for cooking. if you are hardcore or not as lazy as me, the experts say you can leave it out at room temp for another day or two as long as your kitchen is cool, but it must be immersed in brine. -
Thank you ShishKab-
What is your fave Turkish place in PS?
I miss the really good Turksih food we had in Manhattan.
Any suggestions?
and SeriousEats is a fab website- -
Has anyone mentioned Tofu on 7th for very bad food? I tried it when we first moved here and then aagin a few weeks ago - everything we ordered was horrible.

hmm... i don't have one. but i think there is a new-ish place that opened on fifth ave that some folks have commented on. maybe do a search.

but a fave pan-mediterranean (by that i mean it's influenced by a bunch of places, including Turkey) place of mine is Olea in nearby Fort Greene. take a looksee:
Brooklyn PaperThe menu at this pan-Mediterranean restaurant takes “a little bit from each country of the Mediterranean Sea,†says co-owner Johannes Sanzin. The cuisines of Italy, Greece, Spain, Morocco, Turkey and others come together to create dishes original to Olea, which opened in 2005. Sanzin recommends a starter of falafel-crusted artichoke hearts with Turkish eggplant salad and tahini sauce. Follow it with roasted whole orata with “patatas bravas†(fierce potatoes) and broccoli rabe. Olea has now added a raw bar and a tapas menu; the “Turkish cigars,†phyllo dough wrapped around ground lamb filling and served with “tzatziki†(a yogurt sauce laced with cucumber and garlic), are especially popular with diners, says co-owner Dan Demarti. For dessert, Demarti recommends the panna cotta duo, two ramekins of chocolate and vanilla Italian custard. The terracotta-tiled restaurant seats about 40 in a decor that is “wonderful, Mediterranean-like, lofty and airy.†On Wednesdays, there’s a live accordion player and a four-course, $25 prix fixe tasting menu. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, with brunch and dinner services on weekends.

I'm late to chime in on Aunt Suzy's, but I actually like it - the food won't win any awards, but it's decent and cheap. It's a good place to go with a big group of people (especially if there are picky eaters in the group) and it's a good place to take mom - moms think it's quaint and affordable.
One place I'll never go to again is Scottadito. We went for Mother's Day brunch and everything that could go wrong did. They didn't seem to have our reservation, they tried to seat us at a bad table (we did get moved after complaining), the menu for Mother's Day was really limited, the service was slow and sometimes non-existant, and it was pricey for what we got. A real disappointment because I've wanted to try it for a while.
I also have a grudge with Press 195 - I love their sandwiches but they never seem to have a delivery guy available when I call. -
Subject: What to/not to eat in the Slope
I had a tamale chicken mole at the 7th Ave fair (wow - first time ever I saw local eateries really putting it out there - fewer crap zepole/sausage carts though there were the requisite - Ugh - mozzarepa stands). Chiles/Chocolate is a yummy place - only did brunch, need to do dinner. Yes, everyone is right - Bellville has lost it. Such a shame - when it opened it was fabulous in both service and food. And is there a decent take out Chinese place in this neighborhood? Ala Turkana was tasty and fresh when we got food from there. Bonnies has fab wings. I miss Snooky's too for a good takeout burger/fries/onion rings. Tempo is a favorite - consistently delish. 7th ave street fair allowed us to taste a few new places - that's what the fair should be! Kudos to whomever worked to get local shops to participate more. Sorry to hear about Applewood. Haven't tried it yet... -
Right, United. Last week I bought a some organic steak (whole) and had them grind it for me. It was pretty good. That's how I usually like to do it. Buy a cut and make the butcher grind it. Or I put on those old style ice skates with the double blades and stomp on the meat like I'm making wine.
-
BabyF, you might want to consider giving Scottadito one more try if you don't feel too burned. i've never had a bad experience there, and i've actually complimented them on good service. granted, i've never done the holiday brunch thing, only reg. evening dinner. but it's been a lovely experience every time.
it's unfortunate they failed you so miserably. -
shishkab, have you tried Vegetarian Palate on Flatbush? I especially like their asparagus with tenderloin tips and it's nice to order anything on the menu knowing it's all vegetarian.
As for sushi, I've always been happy with Kiku, but it has to be the one on 7th Avenue. It's consistently good but only takeout or delivery.
Aunt Suzies: I'm spoiled, my stepdad is Italian and is a wonderful cook. I have never been impressed with Aunt Suzie's, to me it's not worth the price. But I'm lucky, if I want great Italian food I just go home!
Howdy, Stranger!
