I went there last night. What was gross about it? Which appetizer/s were tiny? It looked and tasted excellent to me.

It is a lot like Kalustyans on Lex, which I love, but the selection of products is different. Sahadi's is more focused on Middle-Eastern items, but doesn't have the broad selection of Asian/South Asian products that Kalustyans does. It also doesn't have an eat-in area like the upstairs of Kalustyans. However, within the range of things they do carry, Sahadi's is unrivaled. Their prices are generally excellent. It's walkable, but depending on how much you buy, you might need to take a cab back (I always wind up getting things like a huge can of olive oil).
It sounds like Kalyustans on Lex, my fave!

But, nubnu, please tell us what you had at Taro, and what you expected? What the heck was gross???? Tell us about the fish you had?
I assume you didn't do Omakase - one of the best for the buck anywhere. -

it's walkable, or you could hop on the B63 at 5th ave and it'll run you right past (or right back if you have lots o' stuff to carry). -

what was gross to me was the place itself. it felt dirty and unsanitary. i know everyone loves loves this place, but i was truly disappointed.
the asparagus app was beyond the tiniest portion i have ever seen anywhere. the avacado salad was a freakin joke. the tuna was good, it melted in my mouth, i must say. But overall, it wasnt a great experience.
Im sorry if I offended anyone. I will try it for take out.
On a different note, I tried Iron Chef on Clark St tonight in Bklyn Heights and it was YUMMMMY -
I will be the first one to agree that it is a hole in the wall. Still, I'll take it over Geido and Blue Ribbon and most of the Manhattan sushi places any time. You might want to try Ise on 56 Pine St. in the Wall Street section. It's very clean, they make great sushi and have an exquisite Japanese kitchen. We're talking spicy squid liver here.

my fave whole in the wall in the city is hane on 3rd ave @ 38 street
i miss it
its fabulous and they opened a huge one on 21st @ 1st ave.

My hubbie and I ate at Al Di La and we got majorly sick after. Don't know what all the hype is about. :roll:

Also an awesome indian place is Taj Mahal on 3rd avenue and 74th street in Bay Ridge.

Favorite restaurant in the Slope:
Chiles y Chocolate, hands down
Al di la has never disappointed
Sushi:
expensive: Blue Ribbon, cheap: Yamato
Pizza:
expensive: La Villa, Anthony's, Franny's; cheap: Roma
Chinese:
Hunan Delight 100% for their veggie options; Tofu on 7th sucks
Indian:
Joy and Kinara; Star of India and Amin are too repulsive to even mention.
Middle eastern:
Olive Vine, Pita Pan
Pasta:
La Villa; Went to Aunt Suzie's once and it was disgusting, watery, bland. Same for Tutta Pasta... I'm always mystified as to why people eat at Tutta... is it people from out of Park Slope who just don't know any better?
Thai:
Song
Mango, although it's been a bit spotty
T Thai does ok pad thai, but not much else
Mexican:
Sigh.... let's see. Not much to choose from.

i tried palo santo the other night. amazing. the fish there actually beat the pants off what I had at brookly fish camp..which is kinda sad.

It must be the space-age meals they microwave en-route in their delivery jetcars. The situation will improve when they implement the wonton-soup-through-phone delivery system.
Uncle Moe's seems to have licensed their system - just yesterday, their delivery guy was halfway up my stairs by the time I answered "black beans or pinto?"
[more seriously - I may not be as gushingly impressed with Red Hot as I was back in '99, but they're still pretty great.] -

Seems like this is a general food thread now. I can't believe no one has even mentioned Red Cafe, I mean even if it was negative at least that would mean people in Park Slope know it exists.
Anywho I like having it to myself. -
I thought I'd chime in with our favorites (skewed to the North Slope, where we live):
SUSHI
Blue Ribbon is excellent, if pricey. Taro and Geido are good, the former for its eclectic menu and the latter for its sashimi - at which it excels.
THAI
Song. Always crowded and loud, but very affordable and tasty.
INDIAN
No competition here: Kinara.
ITALIAN
Pizza (gourmet): Amorina on Vanderbilt.
La Villa - not great, but serviceable and far better than Aunt Suzies. Al di La is good, if a little claustrophobic.
BURGERS
Bonnie's Grill.
BRUNCH
Miriam: surprised no one brought them up - generous portions and fresh ingredients. For no-frills, I like the family-owned Usual in Prospect Heights and the Prospect Cafe on Flatbush, though it's admittedly gone downhill as of late.
CHINESE: Very poor choices overall
"AMERICAN":
*probably* Szechhuan Delight, as there are 1-2 dishes that are decent enough.
"WINDOW":
Hing Lung on Vanderbilt. Awful name, but giant portions and they'll actually cook up "genuine" Chinese food if you ask (such as Baby Bok Choy, etc).
AUTHENTIC: CANTONESE, ETC:
Sunset Park is really the best bet, though there are other pockets here and there in the borough (Avenue U). No Shanghainese of which to speak - you have to go to Manhattan Chinatown as far as I know.
MIDDLE EASTERN
Sahara on Coney Island Avenue is always worth the trip, though we find that Olive Vine, while not great, suffices.
VEGETARIAN:
Vegetarian Palate on Flatbush: really yummy - try the Curry Chicken over Rice and the Lion's Head.
GOURMET:
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Garden Cafe on Vanderbilt, with a Food Rating of 28 out of 30 from Zagats, and a true cut above: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/25/dining/25JOUR.html?ex=1403582400&en=e4ec8f5d29844f3f&ei=5007&partner=USERLAND
There's a few that I've skipped that probably deserve mention, and some others that we haven't yet tried. I must confess that I miss Snookies for what it was: the last (and only) no-frills bar/restaraunt of it's kind, that couldn't be beat for a cheap beer (with generous buy-backs) and inexpensive food while watching a ballgame with friends. -

Yeah, what's up with Taste of Thai on the second floor of the building on 7th Avenue and Carroll? I ordered a shrimp dish via take-out for around $15.00. The six pieces of puny shrimp had barely any sauce and were unaccompanied by any vegetables. I could have fried up six pieces of shrimp for less than $5.00 myself. WTF?
Szechhuan Delight on 7th Avenue is terrifying. I've found hunks of mystery meat that looked like pork in "vegetarian" dishes. WTF? -

But nothing replaces the lovingly yummiest delicious piled high Mexican Sandwich( Shop). Oh, how I miss it's intimate (and yet obnoxiously loud) venue... -

Hmm, no love for Red Hot on 7th and 10th? I think it's by far the best vegetarian Chinese I've had in the Slope over the past 6 years. Plus, the delivery is damn quick.

There is no really good Chinese food in Park Slope.
I've always thought that Red Hot is overrated even taking into account
my low expectations.
I don't order from the vegetarian menu, so maybe I'm missing out on
their strong points.
Unless their food is "red hot" it is unseasoned and tasteless.
If you go in there, even if the place is empty and it is empty a lot, they will not let you sit where you like, and will insist on squeezing two people
onto a small table even though there is no one else in the place.
