Marriage License Question? — Brooklynian

Marriage License Question?

nubnu
edited November -1 in Park Slope
just a quick question........I have looked at the nyc marriage bureau website and it says you have to wait 24 hours after you get your license to get married but that you can have that waived?

Anyone ever get married the same day as they got their license?
I just want to go, get the license, get married and be done with that portion of it.
ADVICE PLEASE?
Thank you-

  • You have to wait the 24 hours. I'm not sure why, maybe they have to make sure you're not still married to someone else or wanted by the FBI. They make you wait on about 3 different lines to get it processed, so be prepared to wait.

How long does the whole shabang take?
    and Thank You for answering-------
I read on the website they can waive the 24 wait thing.
My inlaws are only in town for a few days and i wouldlove to do it in one day.........possible?
  • Go early for the license!!! We didn't have to wait in line at all. It took like 15 minutes. (that was Manhattan btw)

We did the ceremony in Brooklyn, and again lucked out and didn't have to wait. It was about 1pm on a Tuesday.

    Thanks Caaahyoko,
But this implies you went twice to wait out the 24 hour waiting period right?
I was wondering if we can just go, get the license, and then do the ceremony right there, same day?
  • Why don't you get the license before the in-laws come to town? You can get the license up to 60 days before the ceremony. You'll have to call the Marriage Bureau to find out about waiving the wait period, I don't know anything about that. We went in Brooklyn and went early - it didn't take super-long but we had to wait in one line and give paperwork to one person, then go on another line, and then go back to the first person. I think we were there less than an hour but all the lines were a joke.
  • Thanks Babyfish
I just found out that the only way to waive the 24 hour rule is if you are in the military (which i am not!)
So yes we will have to go get the license before
    No biggie!
    Thanks guys!

No, we did what Baby Fishmouth describes. We got the license about a week or so before the ceremony. Believe me, your inlaws won't miss anything.
My guess is that its more of a pain to deal with trying to get the time limit waved. (or impossible, as I just read in your post!) Don't fight the beaurocracy! :D

    Oh, and Congrats!!

    Im excited.
Next question since you seem to know-
Wedding Bands? as in rings.........what is a good place to buy them, nice ones? Also what is a great little place to have the after ceremony lunch?
    its just 6 people!
    Park Slope, carrol gardens, etc...........?????
  • I picked out our matching titanium/diamond rings from Boccia. They used to have a shop on Spring St, but now I think they're just online. Their sister company Teno is still on Spring, just west of Broadway.

    www.teno.com

As far as lunch goes...we just walked into Brooklyn Heights and picked a place. I wish I had thought about that in advance. If I could do it over I'd probably go to Rice in Dumbo or Fort Greene.

That's about the jist of my whole shebang. One of these days I'll invite people over to our place for a "We got married a while ago!" celebration.
  • i think this was also the plot device for a
"how i met your mother" episode.

    :!: Congrats & Best Wishes :!:
  • Another ring option is to go to the diamond district (47th between 5th & 6th) in the city. They have store after store with all kinds of rings from simple bands to the BLING BLING and if you are willing to put in some time you can get a pretty good deal. Just be forwarned, the amount of choice can be overwhelming.
