Phantom bagpiper on or around 10th Street

Every Sunday night we are treated to a bagpipe serenade. Does anyone know where the music is coming from?

  • Are you sure it isn't a bird imitating a bagpiper?
Sometimes I will hear bagpipes associated with a funeral at Duffy's or the Church on 9th St and 4th Ave... what ave crosses tenth street where you are hearing this?
  • I see a lone bagpiper in the park often. I wonder if that's the same guy. I wouldn't mind being serenaded. I love bagpipes.
  • It's definitely a bagpiper, not a bird. The sound seems to be coming from our block, i.e. 10th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, but it's difficult to pinpoint the location. I wouldn't be surprised if the piper was up on his/her roof.

I really don't mind the weekly serenades - it's one of the neighbourhood's endearing idiosyncrasies - I'm just curious as to who and where the piper is!
  • i've also heard this in the vicinity of 10th st b/w 6th & 7th.

I do too. Nothing makes me cry faster than Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes.

    Same here!
  • I've definitely encountered a lone piper in the Park a couple of times, close to the lake on the West side.

I also recently encountered a lone saxman playing in the bushes. Nothing like a little smooth jazz wafting aimlessly out of the shrubbery.
  • "The Pipery of Prospect Park"

    Movie title? ;)

We have heard the wee drone as well in the ol' Park.

    Pogue mahone!
  • now,now LGWH... no need to get CHEEKY!

Slightly OT but it still made me cry was this guy

  • I've heard it. Boy have I heard it.

While I'm a fan of bagpipes when they're played well, our Sunday night concerts have all the auditory appeal of claws scraping on a chalkboard. I guess some folks forget that there are other people that live in this city with them.

Every bagpiper has to practice -- The Phantom Piper of Tenth Street never plays late so does seem to be thinking of other people that live in this city. I love hearing the bagpipe music! It is just this sort of thing that makes living in this city great.
