low-cost neutering option for my puppy?

Hi. I don't make a lot of money and I have a lovely puppy who is just about ready to be neutered. I've been paying out of pocket for all his vaccinations and checkups and special shampoo and ear cleaner and premium dog food and a daily dog-walker and so forth, and I have savings in case of an emergency (seems more prudent than pet insurance, given the quality of most programs), but I am a little aghast at the price tag for neutering at the vet (about $300, including everything). Is there a reputable nearby place that might perform the operation at a lower cost? For reasons I can kind of but not really understand, it seems that some places won't do so for purebreds, which my puppy is. I would plan to donate money the cost of the operation (and more, when I can) back to whatever service I use, but to do so over time rather than all at once, as I will have to do if I use my vet (who is fantastic and generally not outrageously expensive). Any thoughts?

  • Do you have to disclose that your pup is a purebred?
  • $300 for a NEUTER is way overpriced, unless your puppy is a cryptorchid (undecended testicle). $300 for a spay is standard, and a cryptorchid surgery is essentially the same as a spay.

i cannot offer you an alternative, but i do want to offer some food for thought. traditionally, low-cost spay/neuter clinics have to cut their costs somewhere, and often what happens is that they don't do pre-surgical bloodwork (which in my professional opinion is an important piece of the puzzle), and sometimes they don't offer adequate post-op pain meds. that being said, certain low-cost clinics are better than others.

again, i'm not telling you to spend the $300, and refusing to spend $300 does not make you a bad owner! i'm just offering food for thought when you make your decision about where to take your puppy.
  • Discount certificates http://www.muffins.org/spay.htm . Not all vets take them (they have a list on the website). $52 for a male dog includes anesthesia for a dog up to 30 pounds but does not include blood work, and also does not include pain medication, vaccinations, or antibiotics, so ask how much more it costs for those things. I hope this helps. --E.
  • Animal Care & Control has a VERY inexpensive program going on now:

    $35 spay/neuter for dogs
    $25 s/n for cats
    $10 vaccinations
    $7 flea treatment
    and more

Appointments are every thursday at Brooklyn AC&C, 2336 Linden Blvd.
    Call 212-788-4000 for an appointment.

AC&C receive grant money to do this program, so keep in mind it won't be going on indefinitely.
