Southern Soul concert @ Southpaw on Fri June 15th

Hey folks,

was anyone of you board regulars at the Southern Soul concert on Friday at Southpaw? I am pretty new to the Slope (5 months or so) and was a little surprised by the crowd's reaction to the show.

Mid-60s Stax R&b is probably my all time favorite genre, so i might be a little biased, but can anyone explain why not a soul was dancing? even by the end of the concert (2.5 hours with 4 different bands playing - excellent music and a lot of fun) only a small number of people in the front row were getting down (aside from me and my buddy, who were dancing from the first note until the end). The whole place should have been jumping!

Anyone who can help me understand what was going on? I love living in the Slope, i don't want to think that the crowd here is a little...ahem...lame. or, even worse, pretentious. Maybe Southpaw is a non-PS hangout? was it an off night? or maybe every guy in there was just too amazed to dance because of the beauty of a girl standing in the front row (tall, long straight hazelnut hair, mid-20s, black dress, dark hairband - will you marry me?)?

Anyway, aside from gorgeous gals, any explanation? is dancing not cool anymore? Was my Union Hall hipster-fratboy outfit too obnoxious? was i talking too loud about credit derivatives? please, help me, i do not understand.

thanks,
A.

  • Part of the problem was the density of the crowd, there wasn't really much space on the floor to dance. Plus, for the most part, the crowd was made up of aging awkward types who are typically too self-conscious to dance. I was a little surprised at how few Mods were there (I guess the music wasn't Northern enough - thank god!).
