Apt searching and Animal abuse — Brooklynian

Apt searching and Animal abuse

Hey yall,

Just found this forum today.....very niice.

1. I've been living in the heights for 3 years. I'm moving out of my apt, away from my craigslist roomates, and looking for a 4 bedroom around the heights with 3 of my close friends. Any tips on apt hunting?

2. I read alot of posts about crazy happenings in the neighborhood---I will add to this. About a week ago I heard some commotion outside Cheryl's (where I wait tables) and looked out to see a group of tweens assaulting a very small grey pitbull----whose young (maybe 9 yrs old) owner did not seem to care. One girl took a running kick at the dog's ribs after complaining that it snarled at her. As the dog and the owner crossed the street (in no hurry) a few girls threw glass bottles at the dog that shattered on the dog's side. I stepped out and asked said something like "what the?"---getting the group's attention but no real response other than giggling. I'm not from brooklyn, but wild tween behavior is not foreign to my home 'hood of Albany, NY (yes, there are "'hoods" in Albany). Anyway, I didn't call the cops, but know I should have.....just to raise the number of complaints. I've seen the dog around a few times and never with a leash-holder past puberty.

I love this neighborhood. I think the high percentage of newcomers (like myself) contributes to a lack of strong community ties---which then contributes to a kind of feeling anonymity that allows people to do totally unacceptable things in public.

So....nice to meet y'all.

  • Welcome, mrsunshine!

That is WAY messed up about the dog. Please, PLEASE do consider reporting this to the police and animal control. Or even snap a photo of them next time you see the kids, if they're around that often, and then report it to the police and animal control.
  • Appolonia is absolutely correct. Give a call to the cops if you see this happen again (or even call about that incident). And people wonder what makes an animal vicious.
That poor dog's owner should have done or said something, even if it is a kid.
I don't at all understand where anyone thinks it's OK to do things like that to an animal (and I'm talking about the tweens) It couldn't even defend itself, and if it did, it would have been considered in the wrong for reacting to the abuse.

I hope for the best for this dog and any other animals these kids come in contact with.
  • I just had to turn away from the computer to calm down after reading about that poor puppy. Please post the best description of these people and dog that you can. If you see them again please try to get a picture of them. I have no tolerance for people abusing animals and I honestly don't know what I would do if I witnessed something like that. But I'm damn sure it wouldn't be pretty. I'm going to keep an eye out for that dog especially when I'm walking my dogs.

As for apartment hunting, I'll keep my eye out for signs on buildings when I'm walking the dogs. I take them for long walks on my days off, I tend to just wander but if you give me an idea of where you're looking I'll stick to that area. And I'm kind of a geek that likes looking for apartments so if you let me know what your requirements are I can post what I find. Good luck!
  • The dog is quite distinctive. It is a very small, completely grey pitbull. I've seen it on the corner of Underhill and St. Johns by the corner store and chinese takeout place.

As for 4br apts----I'm looking to live as close to where I currently do (Bergen and underhill) as possible. However, as me an my compatriots are low-income, we are looking as far as Franklin Ave/Crown Heights and Lefferts Garden. Ideally, though, I'd like to stay right where I am.
  • Ok, how about price range or pets?

And thanks for the description, I think I'll change my route so I can pass by there. Glad I have 2 big dogs right now, one shepherd mix and a pitbull. No one has to know they aren't vicious.
  • price range--below 2400-----we don't have pets....but we'd like the option. I'm one of those people who tries to pet every decent size dog that I see. I'm in a bit of withdrawl. I worked as a dog runner last year for 6 months in manhattan (Not a walker, a runner----see runningpaws.com) and miss hanging with dogs everyday.
  • When I was looking for my current place I was finding tons of 3-4 bedrooms in your price range. It drove me nuts! Here's the measly one I found so far:

  • I've said this before on this forum, but please please people, report animal abuse! It is a crime punishable by prison, fines, or both. The problem is it's often hard to prosecute, because it is rarely directly witnessed or documented.

So if you see something, say something! If possible, get out your cameraphone and take a picture.

Report it to ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement:

and call the police. Regular police officers are sometimes unaware of this and may tell you to call ASPCA, but they are required to issue a ticket to or arrest anyone who violates anti-cruelty law.

So if you witness abuse, please document it and insist that the cops act on it.

As for finding an affordable apartment, I wish I had some advice for you on that...

Agree. Do it. There's no reason to put up with horseshit like this.
  • I agree about reporting it, it's also good to know that cops may not know they're required to issue a ticket. How big was the puppy? A few months or a little bigger?
