Giuliani is the closest thing the '08 Race has to GWBush
Subject: Giuliani is the closest thing the '08 Race has to GWBush
I love this quote: for Giuliani, 'every day is 9/12'Seriously, how has Giuliani made it this far in the race?
I turn now to Andrew Sullivan of the Times of London, via the blog Anonymous Liberal:
Monday, June 11, 2007Even worse, Giuliani accepted the job of being on the Baker/Hamilton Iraq commission, but was eventually asked to officially remove himself from the group after never showing up for a single meeting. Here is a golden opportunity for the guy to build some kind of foriegn policy portfolio, and he can't even be bothered to show up at the meetings.
Giuliani's Campaign Theme Song
I enjoyed this passage from Andrew Sullivan's latest Times of London column:Former New York mayor Giuliani is always entertaining, and he hasn't disappointed. The most remarkable aspect of his candidacy is its complete immunity from anything that has actually happened in the last five years. For Rudy, it's still 9/12 and always will be. And why not? He hasn't felt so significant since – although his speaking fees have. He has no qualms about Iraq. It's simple, after all. We just have to win.Sullivan's right, for Rudy "it's still 9/12 and always will be." It reminds of the now classic Onion headline: Giuliani to Run For President of 9/11. And it got me thinking. Hillary Clinton recently held a contest to select the theme song for her campaign. With Giuliani there's no need for a contest. The choice is obvious: "Stuck in a Moment" by U2.
His entire analysis of the war on terror can be reduced to the notion that we stay "on offense". Offense means anything aggressive, it appears. He wouldn't rule out a nuclear strike on Iran, for example. He endorses "any methods necessary" to extract information from anyone who might seem like a terrorist.
He spoke of two recent terror plots – one involving a handful of loons who wanted to invade a military base, another a crew of Caribbeans who dreamt of blowing up JFK airport (they had no weapons and no firm plans) – as if they were an imminent threat to America's very existence.
As his eyes flash through his wire-rim glasses, and he bobs up and down on his shiny corporate shoes, you can just see him drooling over the chance to fire a few missiles, round up a few immigrants, strip a few more Americans of habeas corpus rights and nuke Tehran. This is the man, remember, who banned ferret-ownership and jaywalking in New York City. Next stop: Falluja. Piece of cake.
Rudy was a decent mayor. I appreciate that he cut down on crime. But he strikes me as a slightly more intelligent, if equally egotistical, righteous and conniving, George W Bush.
His campaign seems all image and no substance. And that's saying something, considering the general state of election politics in America. The curtain is going to get pulled back on this fool.

On the other hand, though, he holds a record for the highest number of First Amendment Violations an administration has committed in the city's history.
He cut down on crime, but I'd rather have a president that had more respect for...well, for the Constitution. -
Exactly. That's exactly why I fear he's a slightly more intelligent version of GWB.

Joe Biden challenges Giuliani on one of a steady stream of mindless, empty Bush-esque sound bites:
Biden Invites Giuliani To Debate, Says He Is "Absurd," "Doesn't Get It"
Original link
Joe Biden has struck back at Rudy Giuliani's "party of losers" comment with a statement deploring Republican efforts on the war on terror and in Iraq. "Tough talk and cheap shots won't make America any safer.... It is absurd for Rudy Giuliani to call Democrats ‘losers' after five years of failed Republican policies in Iraq.... Giuliani and the rest of the Republican candidates continue to cling to this Administration's failed policy that a strong central government can be propped up in Iraq. If these are the positions he wants to defend, I invite him to debate me on these important topics." -
Just to be contrarian (as you know I love to do), having Rudy in the White House would mean that for the first time in (forever?) at least a very long long time, Washington would be controlled by someone friendly to New York. Isn't anyone else in this city sick of the South being the only place we can choose our presidents from? Of NY getting shafted by Washington at every turn? Of being the economic engine for the entire region but being treated as a national afterthought (ok, maybe a bit of exaggeration but you get my drift)? I personally relish the thought of a Rudy vs. Hillary all New York contest (sort of in Hillary's case but I'll take it). I personally have more loyalty to my city than my country (sorry but it's true), so I'm psyched that so many NY'ers (also Rangel, Bloomberg, etc.) are on the national scene.

Bloomie is gonna step into the limelight at the last minute and steal the show.
So it'll be an all-NY race with Giuliani/Clinton/Bloomberg all running
We can't lose! -

I have NY loyalty and while Washington may be short-changing us left and right, it seems we're doing pretty well (terrorism funding notwithstanding).
In my opinion, the horribly cancerous "war on terror" and it's proxy disasters such as Iraq and soon-to-be-Iran, are much more important than whether or not we're getting fair treatment from the White House.
our ill-conceived "war on terror" is a much bigger threat to me, my city and my country than any mis-treatment of NYC at the hands of DC. in general terms, these are the reasons why I think Giuliani is a horrible candidate for president. Again, he is by far the closest thing the '08 race has to the Bush/Cheney way of doing things*

Daily Show: Rudy Giuliani's Biggest Personal Failing...in 30 Seconds
Stewart: Here ’s a hint: It starts with annulling my first marriage to my second cousin, and it ends with my kids from my second marriage supporting Barack Obama because they hate my third wife. Ba Boom!

The funny thing is, this clip also demonstrates the appeal of Rudy, in comparison to the other Republicans running.
