What's up with WAMA? — Brooklynian

What's up with WAMA?

Subject: What's up with WAMA?

I'm starting a new topic in response to a post on the thread trashing Jerry at Mayday's, which suggests that he is heading up WAMA. I've attached the post below. While I like the new WAMA banners, I certainly hope that Jerry is NOT in charge of the association. I heard WAMA was denied city funding for corruption a few years back and as a result became nonfunctional. I simply can't understand why it's taken the Washington Avenue merchants so long to get their act together. But if Jerry runs it like he does Mayday Hardware, I guess the answer is clear. The avenue is perfectly situated to take advantage of the weekend crowds from the Gardens and Museums,
Marjorie at Washington Realty has done a great job recently of finding new tenants willing to invest in the neighborhood (the Montessori School and Teddy's) I can only hope more are to follow.
How about planting iron guards around the fences, cleaning up the storefronts, replacing the crap awnings, planting flowers, etc...I see some merchants have set out flower barrels.

If anyone does actually know what's going on with WAMA these days, please enlighten us...

I believe Jerry is the new (or not new, not certain of history) of the WAMA - that whole campaign with the flags on Washington - eat, drink, shop - is his re-invigoration of the association. it's sad that someone with such a lousy business sense and ethic is somehow in charge of this.

Actually, I am a little surprised at how slowly the entire process has progressed...I am not sure if she is doing such a great job of educating her clients about attracting new businesses. Washington Avenue is the neglected stepchild of Flatbush and Vanderbilt and its lack of development in recent years should really be scrutinized by current residents ( old and new). If Marjorie is the real estate agent for these businesses on Washington between Lincoln and St johns, she may want to consider resigning and passing it on to Corcoran or some other more experienced broker who will not have as much of a problem filling those retail spaces with businesses and services. Underhill Avnue is the same deal.

This is not about gentrification, but about restoring Washington Avenue to its previous glory Days of the past. This used to be a booming ave that served the community and now it is filled with more vacant and underutilized storefronts than all of the avenues in the P.S/P.H area. It makes no sense. I'm tired of walking over my dead avenues to more prosperous ones to get things 1-2 miles away...in New York.

But WAMA in general sounds like a dead end organization and I remember discussing this a while ago with this thread:

  • There's talk of... well, the desire to start a new Merchant's Association for Washington. I'm all for it, but I believe that it's going to be subject to a certain % of merchant participation - could be a tough sell for some along the strip.
