Con Edison Bill Question
i've just recieved my first month's electric bill and it came in at a $57.00. first time in a long time that i pay con ed. does that amount sound right for a 1 bedroom, no air conditioner, apt?
since i live on the ground floor of a brownstone i was wondering if i am paying for the lights in the hallway and that's why the bill was so high. maybe $57. is not bad at all. what do you think?

Subject: Con Ed bill
Try comparing your bill with other apartments of the same size, same usage, in your building.
It doesn't sound unreasonable - I have a one-bedroom, am home all day, and pay about that much, in mid-season like this. (Not with a/c, and not in the winter when I use the lights more)
Once, years ago, when I lived in a basement apartment in a brownstone, right after it had been renovated, I found out I was paying more for Con Ed than the landlord's triplex. It turned out I was being charged a "business rate" and had the basement lights, hallway lights and starter for the boiler on my bill. It took three years of fighting with Con Ed and letters to the Public Service Commission before it was fixed. They gave me a credit. This was in the midst of the oil crisis of the 70s and the credit was eaten in in the next two bills! -
It may also be an estimated bill based on the previous tenant. If ConEd can't get into the building they will send these bills. Check if it was an actual reading and if not arrange for another reading with you present. Then you can also tell them to check who else is connected to your meter.

sounds cheap to me
-
yea, mine for a 1BR is a bit more

con ed. bunch of dumb asses. i gave them keys for my building for over 4 months now. they still ring bell and give estimates. i call them. and they ensure me every month. next month they are going to use keys and i'll stop getting estimates.
-
sounds about right, but do check to see if that was an estimate or an actual reading.

thanks y'all. i did check the bill and it is "actual" but based on some of the feedback and speaking to my neighbor, the amount sounds just about right.
thanks, again. -
Armchair Warrior - they do the same thing to me. And once they said that they didn't take an actual reading because they had "lost" the key. "Don't worry - your house number is not on the key." They found it again a few months later.
If I remember correctly from months and months and MONTHS of arguing with ConEdison, it is not actually ConEdison that does the reading. They contract the job to someone else, and that is the person you might have better luck talking to. -
