Reputable auto mechanic? — Brooklynian

Reputable auto mechanic?

So yesterday, as I'm driving up to Astoria to meet my girlfriend at some art foundry celebration--the first time in MONTHS I'm driving out of my way for something, I might add--I start hearing this high-pitched drone coming from the car.

I think it must have something to do with the brakes, since the sound doesn't increase in pitch as I go faster, isn't dependent on my pushing down or releasing the accelerator, and disappears whenever I push the brake pedal down a little.

So, now that it's back home in Brooklyn and my nerves are thoroughly fried, can anybody recommend a good, honest mechanic to take a look at it?

  • Sorry to hear that. There are a bunch of threads on mechanics including some recent ones, just do a search. I used recs here and from neighbors to find mine.

FWIW, I go to the Mobil station at Flatbush and Dean. SJK, 718.783.0409. I’m not sure how their prices compare, but they are quick and have done great work so far. I have an old car and limited budget. They are good about giving me repair options and telling me what’s worth fixing.

    Good luck!

I go to Rohan at Nok auto. He's decidedly not sleezy. They on St. Marks between Underhill and Washington.
Many other have had positive tghings to say about him.

I have been using these brothers for years. Very nice guys and they are honest. I used to go to Nok, they are also great. Mario's wife drives a newer saab and he and his brother used to own them also, so now I take my saab there.

They cost about 50% less than the dealer...
  • Mario's, 636 Washington Ave. (Dean) 718-638-6545. The best.
  • DON'T go to Ahmed's on Grand between St. Marks and Bergen... no guarantee of the work, no records of funds transferred, and he makes you pay for parts as the job goes along, rather than after it's all over... no good. I got a muffler put on there, it fell off a few days later... I had to pay AGAIN to get someone to weld it on, rather than strap it on with a clamp
  • anyone else here miss Atlas Auto?
  • stay away from Nok. i like rohan, i truly do. we've been in the neighb for quite a while and he's always been cool to us, so naturally when we got a car we took it to him. first, he tells us that we don't need to have the car inspected bc the last owner's cert. is valid until the end of the current year, BUT he still runs a diagnostic and charges $50. okay, a few days later, car is slow to start, so we take it to him and he gives one long-ass rigmarole about older (car model here) and we need change the fuel intake valve - my super pulled some wires out of his boot, hooked them up to my battery and told me to go to auto zone on Atlantic and buy a new battery. problem fixed. what mechanic can't spot a dead battery?
still, like fools we go back: this time the bloody car is smoking, the steering is grating and it sounds like it's about to fall apart. rohan's diag: you need to sell this car. take it to my good friend on bedford, he'll wash the engine and maybe I can get you $2000 for this car. ! . or else, it might cost us anywhere from 3-5K to get is all fixed. you need a new rack and pinion and your rear break-pads are gone and something else I can't remember.
here's the place i'll recommned you, I think they're called BK's auto, and know that they're on Classon and Atlantic, next to the gas station on the Clinton Hill side. there was a leak in my old pan. that's it. all the oil had leaked out and the car was just grating and grinding away. how the hell did Nok not spot a huge-ass hole in the oil pan? after, we noticed this massive oil smear in our parking spot. the guy's name is Sonu and they're straight up.
    sorry about the rant . . .
  • Hmmm. That seriously bums me out. I actually only use Rohan for oil changes and inspection. I've got a Saab and I take it to Roland at Swedish Saab on Classon and Atlantic.
  • I just went to take my car to Atlas and...OH NOES!!! ARGH!!! They moved to atlantic btwn brooklyn & kingston? FAR!!! :(

Funny, I just walked by there on my way home after dropping off my shit-mobile and saw them and their awning with "FLAT FIX" spray painted on it. I think to myself "No way I'd go there."

Goes to show you shouldn't judge a book by its cover - but also first impressions mean a lot. (hey I just contradicted myself, go me!)
