Moving to Bushwick? — Brooklynian

Moving to Bushwick?

My lease is almost up at my Kensington apartment, and I'm considering looking for a roommate and moving. I see tons of ads for Bushwick on craigslist, but I don't really know anything about the area. Is it safe? Decent distance from the city? Anything to do there?
I'm also 23/f so I'm concerned about walking around, safety at night, etc.

Thanks!

  • Well it depends on where you are. I have lived off the Montrose stop for 4 years and have been perfectly safe. My commute into manhattan is 10-20 minutes depending on where I am going. I would say that the area between Montrose-Dekalb on the L line is slowly gentrifying, with some areas better than others. It's really a mixed bag. I find that the Montrose-Morgan area is the funnest, with plenty of cafes, music venues, food places etc opening up.
  • check out bushwickbk.com, there's a forum there that may have some advice. i live on the southside of bushwick, which i like but it may be a bit harsh for someone used to the pace of Kensington. the northern side of bushwick has a lot going on but your tolerance of noise/garbage/art students may temper your view of the area!
  • Hi! I'm 26, single and moved to South section of Bushwick back in April....I love it. Everyone is very friendly, but some blocks are certainly better than others. My advice is to go check some places out and trust your gut!
  • you better not go on craigslist looking for a roomie.. thats bad b-i...
go sumwhere like roomates.com.. its a more reliable credible site.. :D
  • 5 years ago i lived in north bushwick off the dekalb L.
it was pretty sketchy, mostly because it was entirely deserted at night (all warehouses/sweatshops) and i got harassed a lot. i was never mugged, but my roommates were. now the area has hipster-y cafes and condos so it looks like gentrification has reared its ugly head, which means higher rents but more amenities.
  • Just move to Astoria, safe at night and N W train right to the city, crazy amount of stores and restaurants.

NYBrnNRzD, you seem to be encouraging a lot of people to move to Astoria. I'm starting to wonder if you're actually a realtor from LIC in disguise.
  • haha nah im definetly not a realtor. I'm giving people another option cause everyone seems to think that brooklyn is the only place near manhattan thats affordable but theyre all worried about how the area is and if theres enough amenities and alot of crime, so if your so worried about that why dont you just move to astoria where theres already a ton of stores, bars and clubs and stuff everywhere and a very low crime rate, and leave Brooklyn alone and stop tryna change it into something its not when what they want already exsists. Im more about slowing down gentrification thats killing small business owners and driving the prices of everything up cause people come here from other places and wonder why theres no starbucks and no duane reade everywhere and dont care about the family owned places that have been here for years that get put out by corporate garbage.

    Fair enough.

But does the fact that I don't like all the bars in Astoria, and the fact that I'm not scared of low income areas, make it okay for me as a white person to live where I do?

Well first of all the only reason white people aren't scared of low income area's nowadays is cause the crime rate is so low compared to how it used to be that you feel safe enough to move to these places. Where were the white people in Bushwick 10 or 15 years ago? Thats right they werent anywhere to be found cause they were too scared to move there. As soon as the crime came down, a few brave white people would move in and the more white people that come, the safer other white people feel to move in and here comes gentrification, you push out the original residents and turn the area much more expensive that the working class cant afford it.

You ask does it make it ok for white people to move in to these places, and to me the answer is yes and no. Yeah its ok if you want to accept the city for what it is and live amongst it, but thats not the case for the majority of the people moving in. It seems like so many of the people coming in aren't comfortable until it's changed into something boring and generic. The mere fact that someone gotta ask this question about is it ok to move to Bushwick should mean, no its not if thats even a concern for you, cause obviously you don't like the way the area is now and want to change it. Then people say yeah move there and hold on cause the area wont look anything like it does now in a few years. Well fuck you to those people. Who the fuck you think you are moving here from god knows where and cause you got money you wanna just remake an entire neighborhood in your own image. No one seems able to accept the way a place is for what it is anymore. What made the city great was the diversity of both people and businesses, and its disappearing one neighborhood after the other to be turned into a suburb without grass. I lived my whole life here so I seen it happen. It started in Manhattan, this is nothing new. Soho used to be a dump, then it was an artists haven, and now Broadway is literally an outdoor suburban shopping mall with nothin but big chain stores selling the same shit you get in Minnesota or whatever to the people who live there payin $4000 a month for a one bedroom apt. Same thing for the village and the lower east side. Then williamsburg. Now the rest of Brooklyn is up for grabs and its not gonna stop till the city sucks just as much as the suburbs that all these so called "hip" white people left in the first place.

New York was always immune to the corporate bullshit that infests the rest of this country, but since the new people moving in find familiarity in corporate owned businesses, they welcome them coming into the city with open arms and putting out all the private owners who been living here forever. Let me give you an example, Olive Garden on 6th ave and 23rd street in Manhattan. A disgrace. You call that Italian food? But as more people infiltrate the area from out of state, they see Olive Garden and say, oh let me go there cause its familiar. The only reason that place survives is cause Chelsea has been so gentrified in recent years its ridiculous. If a duane reade opens a block from a private drug store thats been in the neighborhood for years, where do you think people new to the area are gonna shop? Manhattan is dead as far as Im concerned, theres a damn Bannana Republic in the village now, you gotta be kidding me. I just cant stand it cause I know that Brooklyn is next, then the south bronx most likely. Long Island City is already joke. 800 grand for a condo? Come on..
  • Why possibly are white people asking permission to live in Bushwick or Bed-Stuy? All it does is result in this now tiresome rant about how people who demand/expect safe streets and appreciate additional services are ruining the neighborhoods for others. It is a racist argument, denigrating all humans, whatever their shade is, by insinuating black folks don't want a duane reade or a good (and well priced) supermarket, etc. Even though most proponents here claim to be "of color" it reduces the black community to stereotypes best relegated to Rap videos and the trash-heap of history. It is time for us all to be race traitors and demand safety, services, etc for everyone. Stop defending the ghetto, whether it be black, jewish, italian, wasp, etc. If you want rent protection, subsidized housing, capital investment for small business owners, demand that, but stop using the threat of racial violence, crime and prejudice as a shield. It is just ugly.
  • You say 23f but you mean young white girl.

Anyhoo, I have lived in Bushwick for the past 15 years I own a 3 story brownstone on Bushwick Av which is occupied by only 3 people myself my husband and my son.

No, it's not the best neighborhood in the world. Nor is it the worst. It is what it is. Close to manhattan 20mins by car or train. J train or Willy B. Smack in the geographic center of NYC which means you can get anywhere in the metro area rather expeditiously.

The schools suck but they are getting better. In comparison with other areas that have less non-whites if you will, Bushwick leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully, with the influx of the "hipsters" ( I use this word loosely cause they dont look hip to me) there will be an upgrade in services et al. Good Luck on your search.

PS Parking is horrible and getting worse. 8)
  • Subject: well...

shit if you are hot, i'll link up with you and give you a tour of the neighborhood... :)
  • When i was a kid in long island, bushwick [and sometimes conduit] was where you went to buy heroin
