Getting to BKLYN

Hey-

Can anyone recommend a good place to park outside of the city and take a train into Manhattan? My sister is driving from Rochester, NY - but has never driven here before so I'm wondering if there's an easier way for her to get into the city.

That would be fine, but I'm looking for a different option so she doesn't have to drive into Brooklyn as it can be a little overwhelming for people doing it the first time...

Are you comfortable driving in the city? In the past, I've taken a train to meet a friend/family member and then driven them in to the neighborhood. If If it was my car, I'd hate to leave it behind for days, and it's always nice to have access to a car for errands/tours.

I'm from Rochester too, and I have been trying to explain to my mom that driving down is not a good idea. The best way is the train or Jetblue to JFK. There are a few parking garages in PH area, but still means you have to drive into Brooklyn. Flights on Jetblue are fairly cheap on off-holiday times. Even the train is fairly cheap, just takes more time (about the same as driving)... pack light for the train, you have to carry your own luggage.

Hope the visit goes well. I'm headed to Rochester in August, can't wait!

If she comes down 87 you can have her park at one of the Metro North Stations and she can take Metro North down. The other option (although it is very long) is to take Amtrak.

If she's willing to do Metro North, I think its the Hudson line that runs close to the Thruway. You'll need to do a little matching up with train and metro north maps to try and match up a good location to park.

I'd second the fly into JFK as you best option.

Another vote for Jet Blue asthe best way to travel to NYC from Rochester.

Amtrack takes a long time, runs later than scheduled frequently
and is not inexpensive.

The northenmost station on Metro North's Hudson line is Poughkeepsie,
which is about slightly less than 2 hours to Grand Central. I've traveled this off peak hours with the round trip fare of about 25.00 if the ticket was purchased in advance, about $35 if you buy them on the train. This is still hours of driving from Rochester and then you still have to travel from
Grand Central to Brooklyn

Parking is limited to permit holder at many stations, some of them allow overnight parking for a fee (for example Croton Harmon is $11.00 per night), weekends are free.

Also keep in mind that the Hudson line runs on the East side of the river, while the Throughway is on the West side (until the Tappan Zee at Tarrytown). There is, however, a Metro North / NJ Transit hybrid line (the Port Jervis Line - an extention of the Main Line) that goes out of Hoboken (connect at Seacaucus Jct.) that gets you close to the Throughway at Harriman.

Poughkeepsie does have a parking garage that may allow for long-term parking without a permit. The smaller stations along the way are fairly limited to commuter permit parking, as mentioned above.
