Kobayashi vs. Chestnut
The IFOCE-sanctioned Nathan's annual hot dog eating contest is this Wednesday July 4th. This year promises an epic rematch between Kobayashi and American Joey Chestnut, who got edged out by Kobayashi last year, but has since broken his world record.
Where's the smart money on who will take home the coveted mustard-yellow belt?

Isn't there a new Japanese guy too?
I don't think Chestnut stands an honest chance. -
I love my boy Kobayashi, but with his jaw problems I think it's Chestnutty's chance to dawn the weenie belt.
Are you going Carny? -
On June 25, 2007 Kobayashi announced on his blog that he seriously injured his jaw during training. He stated that he can only open his jaw about the width of a fingertip. Kobayashi's participation in the July 4th, 2007 Nathan's contest is seriously in doubt.
(gasp) -
Well, it's not a true victory for Joey if Kobayashi isn't there! That's like winning the NBA Champeenship the year after MJ retired... It's really nice, to be sure, but it's not the same thang.
-
For the Chestnut skeptics- just 2 weeks ago, he bested Kobayashi's record by SIX dogs! 59.5 hot dogs in 12 minutes!
News as of 6/30 is that Kobayashi will be competing. -

Unfortunately, I'll be working 10-6 that day, so I'll miss the contest, which is at noon. If you want to watch, you should get there at around 10 to get a good viewing spot.

Yeah... but this is going to be center stage. The biggest eating competition around... to continue the NBA analogy, just about any NBAer can drain a shot, but how many can do it when it really counts? 90% of the game is 100% mental.

It's on ESPN right now.

Video here of ESPN interview with Joey Chestnut. -
I watched it on tv , and maaaaaaaaan Joey Chestnut was so close! He was in the lead there for a little bit , dammit. It looked like he was gonna puke at some point. He was kinda shaking during the last minutes of the competition , too.
A re-run will be airing on ESPN2 @ 2:30am-3:30am
And again on ESPN tomorrow @ 12pm-1pm
MOD NOTE: The event is at noon on 7/4 and will be shown live on ESPN. -
I'm thinking of taking my kid...anyone been? Is it so mobbed she'll have a rough time of it?
-
Taking your kid , where?
Coney Island for the hot dog eating contest? You are too late! It was earlier this morning , not tomorrow.
You can sit her down infront of the tv for re-runs , though.
If you meant something else , then my bad. 8-[ -
I think that you saw a replay of last year's...

Screw it. We're going. My daughter thinks it's going to take an hour for a guy to eat 50 hot dogs. She's in for a surprise.

Anyone know what channel I can find it on, on Optimum? -
Oof, found it, sorry. ESPN's coverage of this is freaking hilarious.
-
The buildup is killing me
-
watching this is tv is making me really, really queasy
-
ZOMG. That was both disgusting and awe-inspiring!
!!
I hadn't given any thought to the possibility of what the ESPN announcers so delicately called "reversal." Yikes.
:-& -
Uh ah!??
Reversal =
??
If so , that nassssty. -
ah, a politically correct term for barfing now used in televised food gorging contests
-
honestly, i had to turn my head away.

Me too. I have to do that anytime there's a barfing scene on tv or in a movie, whether it's real or fake. Yurk. -
you know, it didn't be ok to barf on tv. ever. or movies. and then, after survivor, it became acceptable. before that, the only time i saw barfing was a: in the man who fell to earth, and b: an unmarried woman.
-
don't forget The Exorcist . . .
(anybody have an emoticon with a spinning head?) -
pitu, that doesn't count i don't think, because it wasn't exactly real.
-
this was really, really for real though...
