Shoot hoops not guns — Brooklynian

Shoot hoops not guns

I'm more interested in the 'Shoot Hoops Not Guns' than the restaurant review. I was recently introduced to this kids basketball tournament in Brower Park, BK. A coworker is a team coach (BK All Stars) and I've met one of the Directors- a lovely gentleman. If you get a chance, drop by the park (on Brooklyn Ave between Park and Prospect) on Sat or Sun and witness a wonderful event for kids and parents alike!

  • Hey Kearnygirl I sent you 2 PMs. Please respond.
  • I heard that this park is very dangerous. Gang members hanging out there. Also lots of fights and shootings in the park. Is this true?

I've lived one block from the park since 2001. I walk my dog there every morning, and have done so since 2005. I've never seen a fight or witnessed any shootings. Mostly, I've seen kids and adults playing basketball, mothers and fathers playing with children on the swings, other dog walkers, free concerts (like last evening), morning joggers, and folks of all ages enjoying the air. Cops cruise through the park regularly. Despite its heavy use, the Parks Dept. employees keep the place remarkably clean and well-maintained. Don't believe everything you hear 1:20. Better yet, visit the park yourself and stop relying on misinformed individuals.
  • Well my son was there for the past few weekends and I stopped him from going because there was a teenager shooting at a gang member the last time he was there. He came home and told me that he didn't want to go back. He had to duck down and crawl on the ground. I don't really think that he is going to come home and lie about this so as far as a relying on misinformed individuals, I'm not.
  • Subject: the reason the park has went baddd

the young people mostly gang members openly smoke weed in front of our children with no regard / the park has now become a money making business for the directors of the basketball leagues and a weed harvest and recriuting nest for gang members. the parks department holds no accountabilty to what goes on in there parks and I do believe that there should be no selling of food or beverages in any park without a vendors permit. they have thier own mini mart out in brower park and nobody seems to want to do anything about it until someone gets hurt, shot or real soon killed. step up nypd earn your little money before you start asking for the big bucks
  • I ride through the park on my bike regularly during daylight hours and have yet to witness any evil doings.
My teenage boys, on the other hand, have been harassed on a regular basis both on EPW and on Nostrand. I'm betting if they hung out in Brower Park much, which they don't, they probably be harrased there as well.
Can I guess this has a lot to do with youthful testerone? I recall reading in a Margaret Mead book somewhere that in certain tribes young males are expelled from the village for several years and left to fend for themselves in the wilderness for a few years until they recover their sanity. There may be some wisdom to such a tradition.
Now if we could only find some good wilderness!!!!!

    Prospect Park!
  • i go there from time to time with my two little kids (to the playground mostly) and haven't had much problems, only a confrontation with a disrespectful teenage girl last summer, but for the most part it's ok, albeit not always very clean.
  • Its hardly every clean. They were talking about this park at the 77th precinct council meeting. Its a shame that this park has so many problems (gangs, shootings, fighting). The guys that run the tournament are trying to do something positive. I hope they keep doing what they are doing.
