Birthday Cakes- Any south slope suggestions?

There's a place called Two Little Red Hens on 8th Avenue between 11th and 12th. Had their cakes a few times and been very pleased with them.
They are a bit pricey, though....
There's also a bakery on 7th by 9th street, right next to Smiler's Pizza - had their min-cakes once and was underwhelmed, but would be willing to try them again too. -
Little Red Hens is called Ladybird now. Split in the partnership I believe, but I think the Slope location--as opposed to the UES location--didn't get shorted quality-wise. Their stuff is damn good, but on the moderate to expensive side, so I dunno if you want to "waste" that quality on the babies/toddlers to mash up at the party or save it as a "good" cake for the grownups.

Yes, Red Hens will make a very good cake, but for an unreasonable price. Very, very rich, tho--maybe too much so for little kids, or at least for them to appreciate. But adults will probably like it.
If you want to go much cheaper--and again, as far as a 1-year-old cares, a couch cushion is fine if it's covered in frosting--you might try one of the Mexican bakeries on the south end of 5th Ave near the expressway. Or Costco if you drive -- good sheet cakes at low low prices. -
Costco sheet cakes definitely rule in the price/size/quality category. Meaning price for size and quality.

All the local Pathmarks and Target carry Carvel Ice Cream cake and you can stop at Party City (on Atlantic for some cute cake decorations) A parent from the Prospect Heights Web group put together a pretty cool list when she went searching for a special type of cake -
Betty's Bakery on Atlantic did the cake for us and it was absolutely darling! Think of a Power Puff Mermaid and it withstood the heat in the park! She took my budget (and lack of advance notice) and worked around it for me.
See below a list of bakeries with notes if you would like to save for your records.
[email protected] -- Keelin Murphy 212-777-0905 -- expensive but cool cakes
Costco -- must have membership / couldn't get through to call ahead
Baked in Red Hook -- very nice on phone but a little pricey
Party City, up on Atlantic and Flatbush - can buy cool cake toppers
bjs wholesale -- no number but a good suggestion
Fairway - 718 694 6868 - call the caterer to order / I didn't have the number and couldn't get through

Margaret Palca Bakes 193 Columbia Street 718.643.3524
cupcake café - won't be mermaid shape but mermaid design with the frosting - great cakes - but not cheap.

Also Ruthy's

They can take any kid of digital picture to "paint" on the cake - one year my son's cake was Darth Maul's face and it was pretty awesome I have to say - but again not cheap.
Betty's on Atlantic - btw Bond & Nevins- 718-246-2402
- Cold Stone Creamery (located in the Atlantic Center Mall)
- Ben & Jerry's (191 Atlantic Ave)
- Baskin & Robbins (Atlantic & 4th Ave - inside the Dunkin Donuts)
Map for: Mrs Maxwell's Bakery Incorporated, Brooklyn NY (718) 345-7400 -- very good price - wanted actual credit card beforehand

Gee stacey, I would _almost_ think that you have done this before...
-
damn stacey who's bday you were doing home work for in the past
. thats a nice list hehe. -
LOL thanks but it was from another parent on the PH Parents Group
. My son is very partial to what he has for his bday cake - it must be Haagen Dazs chocolate chip cookie dough cake (which you can get at larger Hallmark stores). -
Just picked up a birthday cake today from Two Hens/Lady Bird for....$42.00!!!
-
And I thought that $20.00 for a carrot cake at Cousin johns was expensive. Sheesh.

I so know where you are coming from. I have lived in PS long enough to have gone past the days when I thought Cousin Johns was expensive!! Make no Mistake about it.. thei cakes were wonderful and had no competition for so long!! But special ocasion cakes are SPECIAL and I don't mind paying a lot for something spectacular. As far as kid's Birthday Parties I vote on carvel .. They still make appealing "theme cakes" and there is just something about how ice cream cake makes that puddle in your plate.. if you don;t eat it fast enough.. That image is so enduring (from my childhood) that as I see it now.. I start to include that in some great painting.. for the future.. Ah I have the title... Carvel Puddle!! -

I've spent shite-loads over the years on fab cakes from Cupcake Cafe, Magnolia et al for the little darlins. Guess which ones were , by far, the most popular? Yup, COSTCO! Not a crumb left. So disillusioning.

i got a little mini-cake, to feed four, at lady bird a couple of weekends ago. $12. damned good, i have to tell you. buttercream up there with cupcake cafe, which i adore and wish were not in manhattan.
and it was gorgeous, too, which made my mother--the birthday girl--very happy.
