something along the lines of...
hi there. so i picked up my keys and am slowly moving in, will be done by the middle of next week.
i would like to build shelves (a dark finished wood balanced on brackets?) and so i am looking for something along the lines of home depot. someone who would have all the necessary supplies as well as the know how to guide me to do it myself. i recall mention of a hardware store recently here and so does anyone know if this is a project they might be able to assist me with? and where they are? and if not, where i might find a similar store? thanks.

Well, Home Depot is along the lines of Home Depot. I believe the closest one is 585 Dekalb Ave in BedStuy followed by 550 Hamilton Ave in RedHook.

Locally, some people here seem to like Pintchick at Flatbush and Bergen; see New to the Area. I've used Pintchick for bigger stuff, some of the small guys nearby on Flatbush for smaller stuff, as well as Tarzian on 7th and been pretty happy. -
I think some people mentioned Pintchik at Flatbush and Bergen. There is also a Lowes in Gowanus at 9th st and Smith.
-
pintchik is a really cool place, don't know about the prices but i think they're higher than most places.
the lowes is at 9th street and 1st ave, approx. really close. home depot on hamilton is also really close. car-service wise, i think either of those is your best bet. (as someone who goes to both quite frequently) -
Couple blocks off, but close - Lowe's is between 12th and 11th streets on 2nd Ave.
-
i love pinchik with my whole heart, but i don't think they carry lumber.
we've gone to a place on 4th ave in the past; i forget the cross street, so that's no help(st marks-ish?). they've got a big sign, and i think they're closed on sundays, but they will cut things how you like them and in other respects act like a decent lumberyard -

but there is an entrance on 9th.

Modern Lumber on 4th and St. Marks.

This has been discussed here:

Incidentally, if you don't have a car, I'd go to the Home Depot at Fort Hamilton. There are guys with vans who hang out in the parking lot and who will drive you and your stuff home for a reasonable (negotiated) fee. -

They keep making these stores bigger and bigger!

will that home depot actually cut things the way you want them? historically, i've had difficulty getting boards ripped -- small amounts cut off -- at hd. "that's dangerous". well, duh. that's why i'm asking a lumberyard to do it.

I got one gigantic (4x8?) sheet of plywood cut into about 6 shelves. Plan ahead so you make make your shelves with the minimum number of cuts (I made a diagram), because they charge per cut. I had to wait quite a while to get someone to actually come to the cutting station becasue the customer service is quite poor, but once the guy was there, he did what I asked. -
lowe's makes cuts, but the service there is sketchy. sometimes great, more ofthen than not really shitty.
home depot, they have a reputation for dropping toilets on people's heads... but i've always found them to be really helpful. really, it depends on the salespeople/times of day. -

Sid's Hardware on Jay Street off of Fulton Street, by Metrotech, also cuts lumber. They're not the friendliest lot on the planet but they've never been rude to me and they are pretty efficient.

Dykes Lumber on 6th St and 3rd Ave will cut to any specifications you need.

Its really quite easy to do yourself and if you want one stop shopping Lowes has cut wood already for shelves that come in a variety of sizes (i.e. 3'x2"x12", 2'x1"x16", etc.) and lumber (maple, oak, pine). I suggest checking out the stains they have there and staining them yourself so you can get the exact look you want. There are a variety of brackets to choose from and they are also in the standard sizes. All you need to do is screw the brackets up make sure they are level (a great investment is a laser level /stud finder) and place your shelf on them. Good luck and congrats on the new place -
thanks for the advice!

Anybody remember those great bumper stickers that Rozenzweig Lumber used to have? I had one way back 10 or 15 years ago...

Funny.
