Ba Xuyen has excellent (and cheap) Vietnamese sandwiches for mid-day snacks that you can take to the Park. 4222 8th Ave. (42nd and 8th)

Where do I begin...OK here:
Yes, Ba Xuyen. Try the iced coffee as well. They'll get a kick if you say "mot cafe sua da." (One iced coffee)
The best dumplings are about 20 feet south of 8th Avenue on 48th Street. Just go and say “pork.†Five for $1. The wonton soup, yes, you heard me right, wonton soup, is heavenly (little clouds). The chicken and mushroom (steamed) dumplings are worthy as well. Also good: Family Dumpling, 5602 7th Avenue at 56th Street.
Nyonya or Redang Island. 8th Avenue at 51st Street, or so. The roti canai appetizer.
Tacos, tamales, everything is good: Tamales Tonchita (Sign says Speedys). 5919 4th Avenue
Tacos, seafood soup: Rico’s Tacos. 505 51st Street off 5th Avenue. Look for the mural of the pig in the pot. (oh, and the big red screaming RICOS sign). Tacos Matamoros. 4503 5th Avenue
Tamales, Tortas: Don Paco López. 4703 4th Avenue (between 47th and 48th)
The tamales and tortas (raedog goes for the chile relleno version) are excellent.
Also, you probably know this, but look to the very back of bodegas for a counter and a few tables. Some have excellent food. The one between 40th and 41st on 5th, next to the bakery, is good.
Some say the rice and beans at La Sultana del Valle on 41st and 8th are good.
Please report back and add anything new you find. I've only been in the neighborhood three months and would love to hear about new places. (And I love it!) -
Oh, sorry. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Subject: Restuarants
In Sunset Park PROPER:
I really like Eclipse on 4th avenue between 43 and 44th streets. Its got a nice cheap wine selection, good Mexican and American food and a CLEAN pretty atmosphere. The owner is the nice young Japanese woman you see sitting in there all the time, so its definitely a "mom and pop place" you shoudl support:
718 965 1602
I also like Los Petrillos that just opened on like 39th and 4th avenue.
Its a huge space, looks clean and serves Mexican and American food. The seafood is kinda pricey at 15-19 dollars a plate. The portions are good and its CLEAN in there. 718 778 8485
hope that helps
