Cablevision v. Verizon

I have had Optimum Cable for all three since Sept. 06, and I haven't had any problems with their services yet.

I recommend Optimum. I had the Verizon package (including DirectV) for a couple of years but recently switched to Optimum. Particularly with respect to the cable service, I prefer Optimum over DirectV. For starters, I found DirectV to be unreliable in extreme whether conditions. Also, Optimum's DVR service has better features than DirectV's -- including smoother fast forward/rewind and an inset screen to watch two channels at once. The only thing is that I felt that DirectV's picture was slightly crisper than Optimum.
I haven't had a problem with the Optimum telephone service. I switched from Verizon to Vonage (which is a great service) to Optimum. Generally I really like the VOIP -- good, clear sound. But be mindful that VOIP does not work if your internet is disconnected. However, if you have a cell phone, you should be good. Also, if want to have a fax you might have to get an additional line.
W/r/t internet service, contrary to the advertisements, I can't say I notice a difference in the speed of my internet now that I am on Optimum.
In the end I think the Triple Play is a good deal, so might as well go with Optimum all the way. -
I forgot to mention that Optimum has NY1, which DirectV does not.

I'm new to the area, so I can't help you with what works. However, I can try to warn you of potential pain. I tried Verizon DSL in Boston. While the actual phone lines here are obviously different, you'll be calling the same support line that I did. And, I wouldn't wish that support line on anyone. If you have a problem that can't be solved by power cycling your DSL modem, you're in for a painful process.
FWIW, here's the review I wrote for dslreports after getting rid of Verizon DSL:

I just moved from Carroll Gardens where I had Time Warner and Vonage for years and had to switch to Cablevision.
The price is about the same, the Cablevision store and support are much more efficient. Phone line is clear, HDTV looks great and not a single drop on internet so far.
The only problem I have is with Cablevision is the way to maneuver the TV menus and the fast forward with TW skips back a few frames, while with Cablevision you have to guess and then rewind a little.
I've never used Verizon at home, but I know from all the headaches I had dealing with them at work I would never use them again. -
Verizon can only offer regular phone service and DSL as of now.
The only TV they can offer in Brooklyn is satellite - they are a reseller of DirecTV - you know those grey ugly dishes.
Cablevision offers cable tv, cable internet [speedy] and phone service.
Cabkevision customer service is a notch better than Verizon.
Verizon, once they wire Brooklyn, will offer cable tv, internet, and phone service through their Fios [combination fiber optic and copper cable system, similar to Cablevision] but they await NYC approval to offer tv services.
