litter box advice

i am moving at the end of the summer and want to switch my cats to a covered litter box in the new place. so i figured for the next 2 months i would introduce them to the new litter box in a new location while maintaining the one they are used to to make the transition easier.

any advice on picking out a covered litter box for a 2-cat household? (the cats are pretty small, 10lbs and 8lbs...)

The cat enters from the box from the top? And they adapted easily to this? I've never seen that before, very interesting.

I can understand how a top entry would help with litter tracking, but I'm not sure how my kitty would react to it. When she poops in her box (it's a covered box), she likes to have her head and shoulders sticking out the door. I assume because it smells stinky while she's doing her business, she doesn't bother getting in that position when she's just peeing. Not sure she'd be able to get in the right position in the top entry box, but I'm very intrigued.

BTW, separate question, I know some people who have 2 cats have 2 litter boxes, but that it's really necessary, is it? We plan to adopt a second cat soon and I'm wondering if I should expect to need a second box.

I have two cats and we always used one litter box (a large one though).

In the beginning I had noticed that one cat would poop outside the box and I tried the two box thing but he was still doing it outside the box. Turns out he did not like the litter I was using so I finally found one that worked.

I personally love the Littermaid automatic cleaning box. Since both my husband and I are both at work during the day it helps keep any odor down.

Wow, I think I need to get one of those -- I have a cat who flings the litter around with wild abandon, along with a dog who likes to snack on cat poop. This seems like it would solve both problems.

I actually have three litter boxes for three cats, which is probably excessive, but they're in the basement where I don't have to see them.
