Asian Jazz — Brooklynian

Asian Jazz

I know that there was a thread about the new restaurant Asian Jazz (on Nostrand between President and Union) some time ago. Has anyone ventured in? I passed it the other day and it seemed to have drawn a good crowd. Any reviews?

  • Please, please, tell me it's good. So jonesing for some local sushi/thai/chinese!

    When did it open?
  • When I walked past on Tuesday it still wasn't open yet ... when did you go past?

Is Gen too far out of the way for you?
  • I passed there sometime within the past week or so -- don't remember the day, but it was definitely before Tuesday -- in the evening around 7 or 8. There were a bunch of people milling about.

Hmm. Odd. I'll have to run past there this weekend if I get a chance. It is owned by the guy Dave that also owns Tavern on Nostrand across the street. FWIW. I haven't been there in a bit, but the last time I was (early June?) he _did_ say that he planned to open 7/1, which was why I was a bit disappointed when I walked past around 9pm on 7/3 and found it still not open.

Hmm. You've got me wondering if I need to lay off the crack pipe now.

No, just the difference between a short jaunt and a bit of a hike.
  • We tried to go on Saturday.. (went by at 6pm) and it was not open. Is it in fact open?
  • I know the cafe around the corner (in the same building) is open... looks nice.
  • Went by tonight about 10 PM...not open.

Maybe the original poster saw a pre-opening party or something.

Asian Jazz is def not open yet. They had a grand opening party on June 29th and the owner mentioned to me that it would be open in 2 weeks. I saw him while dining at Tavern on Nostand across the street. This guy needs to get is act together as Asian Jazz has been "opening in 2 weeks" for months now. On top of that, the menu at Tavern on Nostrand just changed over the weekend to bar food, as they are trying to compete with the bar on the corner of Nostrand and President. I recently discovered Tavern a couple of months ago and went there every week. And now to have yet another place in Crown Heights serving more junk disgusts me. And the coffee shop of Union---there is nothing good about that place. Just diner-like coffee and cheap pastries----like the coffee shop that used to be where Asian Jazz is right now.

I applaud the owner of these establishments for trying to bring something different to the neighborhood. But that is where his stoke of genious ends. More attention to detail is needed in these businesses or they will end up like all the other garbage in Crown Heights.
  • They got rid of the good food at Tavern on Nostrand? That is no good. Did they at least drop the prices for bar food then? And the bar on the corner of Nostrand and President, VIP is what you are talking about, right? Are they finally serving food there? Every time I've gone in it is a week or two out for the kitchen to be up.
  • I've been living in Crown Heights for too many years to disclose. The one thing that irks me about this neighborhood is that is lacks a good coffee destination...i will admit, I am a coffee snob and cup of bodega coffee in the little white cup or the shit you get at Tummies on Empire and Rogers just isn't cutting it. So when I heard Bagels and High Tea was opening on Nostrand I thought, finally...man was I disappointed. Observation #1 how do you open a shop with that name and you can go in there and they not even have bagels. Once the shop on Union opened, I said I'd give it another chance, especially after the owner told me it would be good...NOT. It tasted watery...just plain bad. I promised myself I'd give it another chance but the thought of walking over there and being disappointed is enough to deter me. When I discovered Tavern on Nostrand, it was because my girl nagged me to go and someone else told me it was good. After trying it once, I was hooked. Excellent cook, generous portions and you couldn't beat the fact that you could walk home afterwards. I gladly gave them money week after week and even forgave them for stupid shit like running out of food. But why in the hell would they change the menu to bar food...such a bad move. You want to give this guy a chance but he seems to be making some dum moves. I went in to ask one of the employees what the deal was and you could see the disgust on their face. What a ridiculous operation. I hope for his sake and ours he gets his act together.
  • June 29th sounds just about right -- I believe I passed by on a Friday after work. I guess I witnessed the pre-opening festivities.

    Keep me apprised!
  • I completely agree with 2:52pm post. But in David's defense, he told me himself he was loosing lots of money on the Tavern.. And every time I have been, about 6 times over the last year, it has been empty. Part of the reason may be because David sits at the bar all night and boozes it up but I am not sure there is yet enough yuppy demand for it. I hope there is but I just don't know.

I wonder if a sit-down restaurant wouldn't do better at the corner of Nostrand and St Johns. There is an old deli space that could be great with windows on two sides.. I say something like Joya in Cobble Hill with $9 entrees, hard to beat. That's about the same as a shimp curry from Glorias.

I don't think the Sushi aspect of Asian Jazz is going to fly...The restaurant will have to have a huge turnover to keep it fresh.

David needs to define Asian Jazz, make it affordable, have reliable hours, reliable food and a friendly staff. The women who worked at High Tea & Bagels could hardly be bothered to get off their duffs to toast the stale bagels...
I am glad he's investing in the neighborhood but he's not being very smart about it in my opinion.
  • I really liked the food at Tavern on Nostrand, but given the prices, felt I could only go there on special occasions. Especially when you can go to Chavella's for a lot less money. But I really loved the chicken and waffles at Tavern, so hope they will keep them on the new menu!

I agree. It was really good, but not something that I could afford on a daily basis.
  • Yeah, this all sounds unfortunate. I've met David at Tavern on Nostrand and truly wish him the best. However, it seems clear that opening another restaurant, with one already admittedly failing, is just a bad idea. Tavern on Nostrand has always been well received on this board and others. Changing the formula there seems risky. If he's going to make a change I think he should turn the place into a real bar, which people seem to be clamoring for, especially if he's changing to a bar menu. Bars are easier to maintain (less overhead and staff) and appeal to 20/30 somethings with disposable income.
  • I agree that it should be a bar but one that serves food. I think there should be a huge U-shaped bar with small 2-seater tables along the outer edge and maybe a few in the back if there is room leftover.

I think they should have a couple salads, and burgers - hamburger, turkey and veggie. Plus some sandwhiches but good sandwhiches.
Then lower the prices. I don't think Crown Heights is ready for $13 crab cakes but is ready for an $8 chicken sandwhich with pesto and either fries or side salad (just lettuce, a tomato and a little oil, vinegar and herb dressing).. I think I am going to start a new thread. "How to make Tavern on Nostrand more successful."
  • Bad news about Tavern.....

My girlfriend and I went there a couple weeks ago. Fantastic. She went there two nights ago with her mother and there was terrible on several levels. First: yes, the menu is ruined. Chicken & Waffles... gone. Clever dishes...gone. Prices? the same.

Secondly: There was an interracial gay couple sitting next to my girlfriend and David proceeded to berate the two men (unprovoked) and tell my girlfriend that "he didn't like that kind of thing in his place."

After my girlfriend's liberal mom got in a verbal dispute with David over his attitudes, one of the wait staff came over and apologized on his behalf saying that he's pretty much just a huge asshole all around.

I have to say that I've been pretty suspicious of him for the last couple months with the way that he flags me down in the street and offers me free drinks (only because I'm white, which is a bit offensive), but now actually hope all three of his pathetic little restaurants fail and make way for something cheaper, better, and more interesting.

    Colin
  • Wow. That is awful. I wish that weren't true of David because he seems to be the only one creating sit-down table service restaurants in the area (besides Saje but that's further from me).

He is usually drinking quite a bit so maybe that accounts for some of the insulting attitude...
  • Give the guy a break! At least he is attempting to upgrade the quality of food on Nostrand Avenue. I can remember, not so long ago, when the vast majority of food establishments around here were dark, dingy and rat infested. If 'Colin' is insulted because he was offered a free drink he has absolutely no idea what an insult is! For those who find eating at any of the restaurants mentioned above so painful - go elsewhere!

    A. Supporter
    • Umm...sorry to controvert your theory, Colin, but I do not think David necessarily plays favorites based on race. I was actually passing by his restaurant one evening with one of my colleagues from work (we are both African American females) -- David was outside sipping some wine, and he stopped us, chatted us up and encouraged us to come in for a meal and drinks on the house.

I dropped by later on that night with my beau (an African American male), and David offered both of us drinks on the house. I figured he was of the school of thought that "gentrifiers come in all colors" and that is why he was so solicitous.

I cannot, however, disagree about his crass manner. When he first stopped my friend and me, his conversation with us degenerated to some crazy rant about overly religious black people. It was clear the man had one too many "drinks on the house". I was completely turned off.

But even still, I do appreciate the variety that his businesses bring to the neighborhood. Its the only reason why I ended up going back that night.

Hopefully in the future he will keep his business open but his mouth shut.
    • David's always been cool to me. He's offered me a free drink or two and once, he straight hooked me up with food at 11pm even though their kitchen had closed. I had just come home from being in Manhattan all day and somehow forgot to eat dinner and I had no food at home.

However, I too have heard him go off on some sort of rant or another, including a choice one about homosexual teachers.
    • well, he just lost this homosexual teacher's business.

what the hell?? is it 1970 over on nostrand?
    • Walked past last night at about 10:30pm. Asian Jazz is still not opened. Tavern seemed to have a decent crowd around the bar, but because of the layout I know it can look that way and still be empty inside. I didn't stop to ask how many homosexual teachers were in the house, but David was outside staring at people on the street, looking slightly creepy. But that could just be because of this thread, or because I was sleepy, or because I had just been around a bunch of homosexuals and was thinking about his purported issues with the same as I passed. Dunno. But in any case, Asian Jazz still looks great, ready to open, and yet closed.
    • Asian Jazz opened on Sept 27. People were outside at the tables eating-- they said it was good!

When I walked past last night, Sept. 27, at 10:30pm, it looked how it always looks. The lights were on, the doors were closed, and nobody was home. There were no tables outside. What time were people eating there? That is very strange.
    • It was open for dinner earlier in the evening. I was there, there were people being served, and it gave a great "feel" to the corner to have two restaurants with outside service.
    • So stopped there for lunch on Saturday but the doors were locked. There were workers inside when we knocked and one said that they had opened but weren't open on Sat until 5:50 PM. We were busy that evening.

We stopped back at 6 PM on Sunday and the doors were locked again and no employees inside this time. Went to Tavern on Nostrand instead and they said Asian Jazz was not open on Sundays.

Not so sure how hot the hours are but will try back again this week and see about the food!
    • I walked past there at 7:30pm Friday, and it was open. There were two 2-seat sidewalk tables. There were two employees there and no customers. I had other plans for the night, but it was definitely open then, but empty. I wish him the best, I hope things turn out well there.
