Union Market - Coming this Fall - 7th b/w 12th 13th

That strange former restaurant - low ceiling, wide storefront - that's been empty since forever, and that has had scaffolding in front of it for a week or two....

now boasts a big banner announcing "Union Market - Coming This Fall".

(what's the history of that spot, anyhow?)

  • If I'm thinking of the same place, it has been a couple of incarnations of a bar - including one called something like Seventh Heaven. I remember each version that opened there would be nice inside, with no decent food to speak of, and always oddly empty.

I also remember that, under every name change I could drink there all night and leave spending about 20 bucks (pay for drink, buy-back, pay for drink, buy-back). It worked for me, but was never surprised that they couldn't stay open.

My roommate and I had a joke that as 'regulars' we kept driving the place out of business.
  • it's on Union Market's main website, too

    http://www.unionmarket.com/
  • I wonder how this will affect Grab's business, since Union will be bigger (if I'm remembering the correct storefront).

I'm all for yummy gourmet market options, although I do wish there were another generalist supermarket closer to me than C-Town. Sometimes I'm too lazy to do the hoof-and-lug, and while I like the little market on 7th between 12th/11th and the market on the corner of 7th/11th (and Russo's, and Grab, and etc.), sometimes a gal is in a one-stop mood.

Oh, who am I kidding? I used to live near Agata and Valentina years ago and thought it was the best fucking thing ever; Union Market is going to pull me right back in to that shadowy underworld of addiction to gorgeous little nibbly things.

Yeah, I remember a big bar with lots of couches. Always deserted. I can't remember the name but it was something that made it sound like it should be a nightclub in Fort Lee, New Jersey. At one time there was also a pizza place in part of the space. The pizza was the worst I have ever eaten; even my son, who happily eats Elio's frozen pizza almost every day, would not eat that pizza. It didn't last long. Was there also a cigar shop?

Union Market on the north end has Blue Apron, which is like Grab, and it's pretty different delicious expensive things . . . I think you guys are just getting more delicious expensive bits closer to home . . .

For big general groceries, there's also that Key Food in Windsor Terrace . . . or (god help you) that megaPathmark under the BQE.
  • IIRC, there was a cigar bar and shop there for a while, named something
    cutsey like See-gar.

Both of those are way further afield than the 9th St. C-Town, tho.

    depends where your field is...

omg - you're so right! LOL! I had forgotten about that one too. I wish I'd kept track of how many names that place had.

I also can't believe it has been empty for so long. Glad to see something good going in that space.
  • every time i go to that pathmark something bad happens. every. time.
  • Is Union Market moving from Union and 6th Avenue to a new location or duplicating itself?
  • I remember when Pathmark first happened on Hamilton ave people were so impressed they were coming from tribecca to shop there. Keep in mind, at that time there was really nothing in Tribecca.. well there was Food Emporium... very fancy (ha ) and over priced.. so people with families or just people who really ate in were willing to drive thru the battery tunnel and back and pay for the toll.. or even car service or cab.. to shop.. Well many more alternative shoppings in that area of Manhattan and no kidding Pathmark has descended in to the the netherworld of rotten vegetables and understocked shelves since it first opened.

    Avoid Pathmark!!

Deliberations was the name. That was what came after See Gar, See Bar, the cigar bar with cigar shop next door. There was another restaurant in there as well that was trying to be more upscale but I forgot the name. Then they turned it into a pizza restaurant. It was all the same owners who had no clue how to market or run a restaurant/bar but they kept trying. Eventually they just gave up and left it empty.

Glad to see the space is going to be used for something good.
  • Before Deliberations it was a health-food store and juice bar. I used to shop there all the time, and was sad to see it close.

OH yeah, I had forgotten all about that health food store. I used to shop there too. But I remember it being closer to 9th Street; I could be wrong.
  • where is this on 7th? what's it next to? i can't place it in my head. (and yes, we're lucky to be getting us all this great stuff down here, but i do miss lucky bug)

The healthfood store/juice bar was on the next block, in the spaces now occupied by Big Nose Full Body and Naidre's.
  • Ahhhh, right, sorry. I'm getting confused!
  • There was also a very-overpriced pet-supply shop nearby. As I recall they closed up very quickly after NYC Pet or whatever it's called opened across the street.

The Windsor Terrace Key Foods is to be avoided at all costs. It is within walking distance to me and I'll get inthe car and drive to Fareway or the 5ht Ave Key Foods before shopping there unless I am REALLY REALLY trierd and just need like 1 thing that tis not produce
