Concerned!!!

First, let me start by saying that I love the passion of this forum for Crown Heights. As a soon to be resident, it's nice to see that many still care about their community. My 12-year old son enjoys this forum as well, except for some of the profanity of course.

The questions and the statement that my son has made to me regarding the depiction of Crown Heights on this board have deeply concerned me, such as:

1. If CH is so dangerous, why are we moving there?
2. Are there going to be shootings on our block?
3. I'm never going to Brower Park, it's too dangerous.

Of course, as a protective parent, I would never place my children in a dangerous situation, but my question is: Is my son right or wrong? Should I be worried about my children's safety? I personally love the architecture and the history, but unfortunately, my son is not old enough to appreciate this yet, so all he has to go on is what he's reading on this board and the media.

I would love to hear from other parents. Thanks in advance.

  • Have lived in this neighborhood for 40 years. On Albany Avenue,
Brower Park is NOT dangerous. That is a fallacy. Of course, at
night time, it is a very desolate area. So you do have to watch
your back. But that goes for every dark block. You have to take
precautions, but as a concerned parent, I do not have to tell you that

There are gangs here too. But there are gangs in Uniondale in the suburbs as well. So you should try to educate your children and get
involved as much as you can. That's just my opinion. I take my
children to gang summits where we can BOTH learn about the gang
culture and what to look out for. If you're involved in your children's
lives and have good relationships you will be alright.

Welcome to the neighborhood. Don't let other peoples horror
stories stop you from enjoying what CH has to offer. Come to
Brower on a Sunday afternoon and see how "dangerous" it is.

Keep in mind that there is good and bad everywhere. Plenty of
good folks out here, just not united

I thinks that's a great piece of advice for parents of all neighborhoods. Well said.
  • I really feel strongly about that. We can't put our heads down and
act like the gangs aren't out there.

While we sit at home and make excuses, those gangs are out on
the street, OUR street, organizing. That is why they've been so
    effective in staying intact.

If your know what to look for, you can stop your child from being
in it before he/she (too many girls are in them too) gets too deep
    into it.....

If you see a little "5" or "6" written somewhere in your child's
clothing (alot of times it's in the HEADBAND of a cap where
parents will never see it and never look for it), then your child
    could be in a gang

5 is for one gang (Bloods I think), 6 is for another (Crips)
I learned about this at a gang summit given by my homie
Geoffrey Davis at his Stop Violence Foundation. We need to
attend stuff like that more often

And we need things like that to be GIVEN more often as well

We also need more forums like this to discuss it
  • Mase - can you please keep this board updated about the next gang summit meeting. Thanks.
  • can anyone translate this:
    image

don't remember exactly where it was but somewhere between nostrand & franklin and bergen & prospect
  • the six pointed star (which is think started with the folks in chicago but now they're associated with the crips) and the fact that the B in Biggie is crossed out (since B=bloods. i THINK the arrow indicates "bloods will go down") are signs that it is a crips tag.

    that's all i know.
  • Similar things were always being written in the elevator of my last apartment building at the corner of Carroll & Washington. I moved from there about six months ago.

    LOL - gangbangers = "folks"

the folks are a specific gang, actually. "how you folks doin'?" can be a foolhardy question on the south side.
  • sweet tea is the gangster disciple of this board. she sonned "guest" without even trying.

    Sonned??
  • Damn, son!
  • I hurt young snitch's feelings a while back, now he has it in for me.

young snitch, do you need a hug? Let's make up.

    Mwah. :D
  • i've posted here for under a week. i have no idea who you or anyone else is. but i'm guessing you're the same "guest" who attempted a greasy rejoinder about how kids in gangs aren't "folks" and got owned. take your L like a man, slugger.
