Good, reasonably priced butcher in N.Slope/P. Hts.?
We recently moved to North Park Slope, and cannot find a decent butcher that doesn't charge insanely high prices. A&S and Union Market's meat prices are outrageous! Had a terrific steak last night that I bought in a gourmet shop in Manhattan - price per lb. was literally half that of Union Market. Any recommendations in N. Slope or Heights? We've been using that Great Western at 5th Ave. & 8th St., but their quality is just OK.

Try Eagle Provisions on 5th Ave cor. 18th St. Their beef is so much better than other places, it's amazing. Union Market's steak tastes the same as Key Food's; Eagle's is like I remember as a kid before feedlots and mass marketing. Skirt steak (my favorite) is 7.99; ground beef is 1.99; and "manager's specials" prices are incredible. We had a couple of 2.99/lb mgr special ribeyes tonite on the grill --tender and so full of flavor. Pork is also very good; chicken is -- well, it's chicken (always tastes the same to me.) Then there's the smoked meats (ribs, pork, bacon), and sausages and kielbasa. They smoke and stuff their own. Eagle is not the place for super-lean meats. Not that it is fatty or gristly, it's got just enough marbling to give flavor and juice. A left-over piece of Eagle steak will be soft and juicy again when nuked. Since we discovered Eagle, we never throw away left-overs. Try an Eagle skirt steak and let me know what you think.

I've heard good things about Eagle before, but I haven't tried them yet.

Eagle's awesome. A little far on the regular grocery-shopping-run for those of us in center/north Slope, but sooooo worth the trek.

Try the Greenmarket at Grand Army Plaza. Friends buy their meat there all the time and we've beenover to BBQ it, yum yum and no hormones or anti biotics
On Tuesdays you can buy from Dines Farms, they sell at Clinton and Kane St in front of the Cobble Hill CSA pickup.
Other than that I go to Staubitz in Cobble Hill/ Carroll Gardens -
Eagle's meats are terrific.. the Keilbasa is wonderful also.. I know some of us who are old fashioned like to go to a butcher where the meat is not packaged in plasic wrap... but this place is the exception! There really is a butcher back there in the store and there is a turn-over rate so meat doesn't sit there too long in its package..
However.. Beware of the packaged potato salad, cole slaw, allll the stuff in store back left side... they CAN Make awesome chopped liver... .... one too many times I brought the stuff home.. and it was rotten.. so.. I open the container right there.. taste it.. and if it is great I buy it.. and if not.. I bring it to the back to find someone who is in charge and tell them that the stuff is bad.. sour.. outdated.. lousy or whatever.. I have a lot of nerve, right!!
I have also bought coleslaw and potato salad that was over.. and the only way to know is to taste. -
Thanks. We'll check out Eagle when we can get up to 18th St. BrooklynJack - we went to the Greenmarket - the prices are insanely high. $9/lb. for ground beef? Hello!

Try the Fort Green market. I think Dines Farms get $4.99 lb for ground beef as does Staubitz, this is raised in a pasture no hormones no antibiotics so it is going to cost more. For chicken I get Murray's. I get the whole breast and split bone and skin it myself I thin $3.29 lb at Fairway -
Thanks. We'll give the greenmarket another look. Ground beef was $7.99 or $8.99/lb. when we went - and never went back. I don't mind paying a bit more for quality, but that's ridiculous.

if you're over by Smith Street I love the produce and staff at Los Paisanos, I think the cross street is Degraw

Hi Muggle... Tried Eagle yet? We're grilling up some Eagle skirt steak this weekend. Over charcoal (gas is for stoves). Eagle steaks have enuf fat to create great smoke and sear w/out burning. (Cook 'em on the edges of the grill and then finish over the center coals after a lite paint w/ Thai sweet chili sauce.) You're welcome to join us.
PS. While at Eagle, check out their cheeses. good, cheap. I recently heard the kielbasas at Jubilat (Polish store at 608 5th Ave) are better than Eagle's. Haven't tried. And for cheap spices and Spanish foods, try the Met Food on 5th Ave near Eagle (17th St, 16th St.) -
Just some thoughts about Eagle.. If you like chopped liver... they totally know how to make it..but don't leave the store without tasting it... This is a very perishable commodity.. If I taste it and tell the "manager" that it is past its prime they remove all from the shelf right then and there.. Has happened afew times.
Also great cheap find.. Back Left refrigerator case.. seek out the Lox peices or ends or whatever they calls them.. great bargain and the cheeses that are cut from the end of the blocks.. think they call them mixed cheese. -
Thanks all! Been a bit busy lately, but we finally had a chance to get over to Eagle - great prices. It's a bit far from N. Slope, but we bought some things to put in freezer. We stuck to pork chops & chicken this time - all good. They didn't have any skirt steak that day, digbklyn, and the fatty cuts on display weren't that tempting to me. But we'll go back and try different things.

Hey Muggle..next time you are at agle you can buy flank steak if there is no skirt steak..and if you ask someone they may be able to bring some out from the back.. depending on time of day and if the burcher is back there working. I like the way their chicken cutlets are cut and they don't sit in the case long enough to get that skanky smell chicken sometimes gets.
