The Whining Newcomers
I don't post often - don't care to really, too much self righteous sarcasm.
After reading a number of posts in this forum I've come to the conclusion that the newcomers are a bunch of whiners. While their ideas on neighborhood improvement are great " them people" leave a lot to be desired in terms of manners. Almost everyting is a problem:
the children
the delivery men
no Fresh Direct
poor service at a restaurant/bad restaurants
noise outside/noise inside
people who make noise while going outside
people who make noise coming inside
the unemployed....etc, etc, etc, etc......WTF!
One lady complained that she liked the cat calls she gets from the guys hanging out at a subway station yet she felt threatened by them ...what kind of bi-polar crap is that?
If most of the comments made in these forums were read by the majority of the the people you came to live among.....it would be a real hot summer indeed.
To voice your opinion is one thing, but the underlying condescending overtones are enuf to cause an outbreak of violence. God forbid public enemy #1 (the people in the projects) saw some of these posts.

i'm a newcomer to the nabe. just saying that we get fresh direct on franklin, at least in my zip code on franklin...i just checked it. where i am on franklin isn't really bed stuy proper but it's pretty much on the clinton hill/bed stuy border, so take it as you will.

it's hard to get used to noise, but it's alright. i don't really think people are bitching, it's a message board. if there was nothing to discuss then there wouldn't be a point. -
complaints about complaints are the very best complaints!

Why so sensitive? If people want to complain about bad kids, noisy neighbors, shiftless adults, poor service, fresh direct, whatever - why do you get upset? Let them complain, damn it! Maybe it will help people realize that their kids are bad, their waiters need training, they should get a job, etc. Unless people complain, status quo reigns forever. Agitate, people, agitate!!!

"I hate the newcomers!, blah, blah, blah." Complaints about complaints. This is nuts  -

So what you're saying is that the people who live in the projects don't care about quality of life issues? That's news to me.

So, you leave change to chance? Thats too passive for most people who want better out of life. Dont grudge those who are more aggressive about getting changes. As the saying goes, the squeeky whell gets the most oil. -

Subject: The whining newcomers
Guest 2, I get you 110% It is just the sense of entitlement our new neighbors have. It's part of who they are and who they have always been. They have no idea what life is like when there is struggle involved or what is like to think about bigger things other than where they can get quality brie cheese. As a business owner and property owner in the neighborhood, I just take their money and think of how they're funding my retirement. It is not pleasant to deal withmost of them, unfortunately. Hopefully they will learn manners or "be taught" manners by some of our less polite neighbors soon... Don't they realize whose neighborhood they moved into? -
Yikes, looks like we've got ourselves a good old-fashioned culture war/ethnic feud raging out of control in FG/CH/BS. What we need now is a false rape allegation by a white woman or a video of cops beating a black man and then we'll really get people's racial sensitivities worked up. Perhaps a couple riots and a handful of angry mobs are in order. It seems like people are really bruising for a fight.
By all means, keep adding fuel to the fire. Racial intolerance and sectarian tension are so in vogue nowadays, after all. -
Subject: The whining newcomers
How about the people that move into a neighborhood actually attempt to become a part of the community instead of trying to create a new one to their liking? Or is that not what they do, since after all its their world and everyone else just revolves around them in it? It is frustrating, but very clear where people’s heads are at when you are a business owner/ landlord and deal with the public on a daily basis. Especially if it is a service based industry (and don't be an "old timer" giving service to a "new neighbor"). My experiences speak volumes of our cultural/ethnic/economic differences and how we treat others accordingly, and it is not favorable for our new neighbors. There are definite differences. Yes I am speaking in generalities, and there are always exceptions to the rule, but I’m also basing it on years of experiences with several hundreds (?), thousands (?) of different people. Who of those "new neighbors" ever HAVE to self-examine or reflect on anything? Do most of them not go through life just doing what they want, when they want? Instead of complaining about the things that they don't like (which seems to be an endless and most favored pastime) do they ever DO or START or CONTRIBUTE anything that INCLUDES the neighbors that predate them? Or is it all about reaching for the phone and calling 311 (the second favored pastime)? I get the self-entitlement since they just spent $1.5 million dollars on a brownstone, but do they ever think about the negative impact THEY could be having on the neighborhood in simple ways like their interactions with people and if they are actually treating others the way the want to be treated? Is it really just about their things, possessions, comforts and conveniences? ALL THE TIME? Has any new neighbor mentioned anything positive about the people that they are now living amongst? I have loved the diversity of this neighborhood since moving here ten years ago, and my comments don’t apply to most of my neighbors that have been here for a significant amount of time, but the new neighbors are just an even less appealing version of the people living on the UES, moving to Bklyn because THEY have now dubbed it “coolâ€. Either that or people are just acting out because they are more and more comfortable since the demographics have shifted and they are no longer the clearly visible minority….. -
Eberri, it's tough to read this huge block of text you plopped down here, but I get your gist. My point, through the sarcasm, is that I wish people would stop ranting about "the other group", and instead be more self-reflecting, and that goes for BOTH sides. The fact is that the distinction between "newcomer" and "local" is artificial and arbitrary, and that all current residents have far, far more in COMMON than they have apart. It's not such a stretch to say that we all would like to see low crime, clean streets, good schools, opportunities for small businesses, a thriving and diverse restaurant and retail scene, etc. "Locals" have been fighting for these things for decades, so "newcomers" are really just joining a chorus that has existed for a long time.
Let's stop with the bullshit oldtimer vs. newcomer rivalry. I was born in this neighborhood over 30 years ago and am still here, so I have my local credential cap on just like anyone else, but the thing I've always loved about this neighborhood is its tolerance and diversity, and the last thing I want to see happen is the creation of a new, needless divide between two fictional groups that fosters all kinds of tension, animosity and negativity.
And I'm speaking to all parties here, as the whining is definitely coming from all directions. Older residents: be more welcoming. New arrivals: tread more gently.

Its hard to be "welcoming" when these people are taking over and pricing us out of the neighborhood and on top of it act like snobs and like they own the place and look at us like what are we doing in their neighborhood. Hard to be welcoming when these dog people in the park call 911 on innocent kids doing nothing but sitting on a bench in the park, watch them get harassed ny the police for 20 minutes and laugh. They took our Tuesday concerts in July away too. The place looking like park slope of brooklyn heights or worse. All I see all day during the week is black women pushing white babies. I never thought I would see this here. When the white women are actually pushing their own babies then everyone must stop for them cause they have a baby. They can block the sidewalk or entry to a store as they please. No type of manners nor common courtesy. The world revolves around them.

Why don't you call the next sidewalk-hogging mom on her bullshit? Seems a better place to do it than here. -

Oh I definitely do. Trust me. I think this is a fine place to discuss it. If they can complain about the projects and whine about not having a cheese shop or whatever than I can post about this. While I am on the subject it is not just the baby stroller moms who do it. -
My uncanny powers of perception tell me that you're in no mood to discuss this rationally.... I'll leave you to stew in peace.

Subject: some of you all are busted
you guys.. the original post, that started this thread is totally valid. Everyone here on this board, the majority, are people relocating into a neighborhood for cheapers rents/morgages, and then fighting to change it into a neighborhood they want. This neighborhood, no matter how it looks to the Crate and Barrel eye, is fierce, and has produced so much amazing personality and artists. Its rich with culture and history. Respect it as what it is. You see screaming teens, sure, do you take the time to notice the vibrant energy or talented kids? You dont like noise? what are you doin in central brooklyn? 24 hour life at your door is the reality and not a problem here, but an amazing circumstance in an amazing city. you sound like you really want Conneticut. Dont lame out NYC.. talk about whats hot for a change.. -

Noise doesn't bother me. I'm not trying to change a thing. EXCEPT- I do want to live in a safe neighborhood, and if it requires change in order to be safe, then I would support _that_ change. And I wouldn't consider it "laming out NYC" either. NYC isn't about getting mugged or beat up, not buying it. -
Hey boygabriel while you are at it can you consolidate all the "shooting" posts and the "is it safe posts", then your blog might have my input registered.
-
Change is inevitable. Be a part of it.

this same exact thing is happening throughout the south with northeners moving in and making everything lame.
Kinda funny how that works out.
also its sad that I cant move into a neighborhood because the current residents think im "screwing" with them or some how ruining their lives. You do live in the largest city in the US and the center of its economy or did you forget that? -
Santa wrote: this same exact thing is happening throughout the south with northeners moving in and making everything lame.
It is fucked up when you can't get grits with your grits anymore. And while it is disconcerting for all soda to be called "coke", it doesn't have to all be called "pop" either, does it?
Ya'll come back now, hear?
Celebrate diversity, oh yeah, and while you are at it, make everything the same so that no one feels "uncomfortable". I'll take a pink bubble gum ice cream, please.
