Tavern on Dean on a Saturday Night? — Brooklynian

Tavern on Dean on a Saturday Night?

I am thinking of having my birthday party/going away party (moving to bed-stuy which is bittersweet) at Tavern on Dean on a Saturday night.

Was looking for something relatively low key namely drinking and maybe a bit of dancing.

Thoughts on the vibe there on a sat night and/or other suggestions?

thanks

  • I had a saturday night birthday party there earlier in the year and I really liked it. I reserved space for about 25 people in the big back room and the manager was really helpful in getting us set up.

We had a large table to ourselves, and the room was empty enough that we kind of took over half of it. We didn't do much dancing, but you could if you want.

Even paying our bill worked out great because I had all my friends divide into four 'teams', each responsible for their own bill. So when they ordered a drink, they told the server which bill to put the drink on. It was brilliant.
  • Good call! Does it cost anything to reserve? What if we are intending to drink, not eat? I also kinda like the idea of not reserving a private space and just intermingling with folks who are already there...
  • used to work at the tavern.....and I've rarely seen anyone dancing there. Though if you take the whole back room you could do whatever you want. Bartenders always play good soul and funk, so you wouldn't need a DJ or anything. Also, not eating is no problem.
Another tip, if you are bringing alot of people and planing on drinking alot, you could probably save money by renting out the back room and having a bar set up----this way you pay a predetermined amount for all drinks and have your own bartender---drinks aren't particularly cheap so you'll spend alot if you buy them one by one-----and you'll have to compete with the regulars at the bar for drinks, or keep hassling your waiter----who will probably be dealing with quite a few other tables---this second option is not that bad. And the food is really good. You should eat there. Buffalo shrimp. They're not on the menu but you can get them if you ask. Catfish po' boy.----also not on the menu, but you can get it. Gosh, I'm such an insider. LOLAMOJ

It doesn't cost anything to reserve, and I let them know beforehand we would just be drinking and it wasn't a problem.

(Actually me and 10 friends had dinner at Tavern beforehand, then the rest of my party showed up later and it turned to just drinking.)

Our waiter was great all night and was constantly around when we needed him. (It probably helped that I gave him a $40 tip up front before the party started. Based on his service for the rest of the night, it was totally worth it.)

As mentioned above, there usually isn't dancing, but you'll have your own corner of the big back room and the music is good so you'll be able to do dance if you want. Throughout the night there were only a few other tables of people in the back room, most of the clientele stays in the main bar/dining room unless the place gets really crowded, then dinner groups start sitting in the back room.
  • Are the drinks cheaper if you pay for a predetermined amount? I was going to rent out the back room but the $100/hr price tag was too steep for me, especially since my friends and I had all the space we needed for free.
  • Subject: renting the back room vs reserving it?

    i cant afforf 100/hr.

so what is the dif between renting and reserving the backroom for my bday?

Renting means the whole room is closed off for your party. Reserving is just like reservations at a restaurant, except for 20 or 30 or however many people.
  • hmm i am not sure how many people will actually show though but i wonder if i can stioll reserve
  • It's a tough call. If the place isn't crowded it doesn't really matter if you over or under-state the # of reservations. If it's crowded, that might be a different story.

I reserved space for 25, about 20 showed up. And the thing is, they reserved a long table for us, but we spent the whole time standing in the open area next to our table.

I don't know, talk to a manager, they're nice there.
