Mothers vs. Hipsters--is the divide that great?
Fresh on the heels of the NY Times going on about Brooklyn blogs (see other post) here's another article about the "divide" between being a mom or an anti-mom-type in Brooklyn.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/08/realestate/08cov.html?ex=1341547200&en=6ffbc4dc2342fc6d&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink
Although it's cool that the NY Times has a lot of focus on Brooklyn, is this all media hype? Snarky posts on this board aside, is there really such a chasm between folks raising children in PS and those who (like me) do not? Is it okay to like my neighbor's kid? (Regardless if it is or not, I will choose to do so).
Is all this talk of mommy mafia, crocs and hipsters simply a Brooklyn equivalent of discussing Paris Hilton?

Well it does seem like a plague of masturbatory writing - writers living in PS writing about their lives in PS - tiresome for sure.
Oh BTW, I love this line - "Fifth Avenue in Park Slope feels like the East Village." I lived in the East Village during the good old days of crack - never thought 5th Avenue reminded me of that. -

Yes, exactly. Too many writers living in Park Slope.
The article was okay but really, "some people are nice, some people are assholes," isn't that life everywhere? -
I had a hard time seeing the point of the article also - unless it was just another editorial decision: "Hey, isn't it time to write up Park Slope? It's the weekend after July 4th, nobody'll be reading anyway." Filler, in other words.
And I agree with LiveToTravel - I lived on Avenue A just above the Pyramid Club in 1986 and 5th Avenue ain't NOTHIN' like that. When I see multiple safety pins through people's noses and eyebrows, then we have something to discuss. Till then...stroller on.... -
Real Estate. Hmm...who's paying for those full page ads anyway? Next week will be about how child friendly Battery Park is. Oh...that was last week.

It wasn't that long ago that 5th Avenue was a shooting gallery. Cucina and 200 5th changed all that.

whats wrong with being a hip mommy?
i know women who totally kept their personalities and were cool before they had kids and are still cool now.
is it mutually exclusive?
Didnt' anyone here have a "cool"mom?
I totally did, and she was an immigrant! -

And I'm sure it works the other way around too. Those people who are blissfully annoying now were asshats before they had kids.

I think I will be a cool mommy one day.
I hope I will. Im proud of my cool mommy friends. They didnt lose their identity in the marriage or the parenthood. Its refreshing.
I do know some who left and they aint never coming back to CoolVille.
My mom is 59 is still the COOLEST mom ever. -

Yeah, I remember. I'm between 5th & 6th Avenues, and even that was a little dicey when I moved in 10 years ago. All I was saying is that I think the writer mixed her metaphors. -
Yesterday I was talking to one of our customers who just had a baby. I mentioned that I wasn't that crazy about little babies, I like when they're a little older and start showing more personality. He's a cool guy, great sense of humor and said something along the lines of, "I know what you mean, I can't even pick up a game in the park with him yet. I'm sleeping 2 hours a night for this? The little bastard." Keep in mind he was joking, after his son was born he couldn't wait to show me a picture the next time he came in. The woman on line behind him said, in a very condescending voice, "If only your wife could hear you now." I swear she almost tsk'd as she said it. The guy made light of it and said, "What do you mean, he was out all night at a card game last night?!"
How nice that this woman felt that she had every right to make a comment to a perfect stranger. All she did was make herself look like a nosy woman who needs to make herself feel superior to other people.
And I have to add that if I walked into Two Boots for lunch and saw the scene Ms. Storey described, I would turn around and walk out. I have no desire to eat while a woman walks around with her sweatshirt completely unzipped and a baby on each breast. Not because I think breasts are OMG SEKSHUAL but because a person is walking around a restaurant partially undressed with another living being sucking a bodily fluid out of her. Let the flaming begin but I personally don't consider that a scene conducive to eating. Believe me, I want to be cool with breastfeeding in public places but, for pete's sake, decorum goes a long way. Sorry!

this is great! the breastfeeding part didn't bother me that much but taking up all of that space in a restaurant is just wrong. then again, i feel about kids the same way i feel about dogs... keep them to yourself and be respectful of my personal space. -
Oh my gosh.. I am a woman (and have breasts) and I have to agree with some of what Caseopele.. has said .
I adore kids but given the choice of eating at Two Boots midday vs. Daisy Diner.. I will go for the Diner and lunch with the pre Bingo/ no kids/ local riffraff crowd any day!! -
that whole description of two boots at lunchtime pretty much closed the door on ever going over there.
-
I live up the block from Two Boobs and can't even walk past it on the same side of the street - way too much of everything kids
-
i'm more afraid of the mothers. i'm sorry, i'm a woman with very feminist views. very liberal, not easily shockable. and hanging around with a room of half naked lactating women sounds about as fun as a root canal
-
Man, I thought for sure I'd get raked over the coals for saying what I did! And brooklynpotter, you said it better than I could.
lmboogie, I love irreverent humor and I especially love parents who can joke about their kids. -
Yep, you can't even joke about your OWN kids in this nabe without someone giving you the look. I live in fear. I tell my kids they cannot say certain "politically incorrect" things; like "Look at that big kid in the stroller!" Even on this board--if i were to joke about how everyone must use thier pets as their pics--I would get flamed. Park Slope people are prick--ly.
I insist on my right to parent--and agree with the above--pets or kids--PLEASE respect my personal space. I am a person too-with or without my kids/pet. -

Ah, god. My kids are now 20 and 17. The PS La Leche league were monstrously obnoxious even when my kids were babies and I nursed both for a year, but also used a bottle cause it was exhausting...i went to one meeting and was so disgusted that I never went back...my kids are awesomely good kids in spite of my bad lactating practices. -

The Chipster, that comment about people on this board using their pets as their pics is too conveniently posted right below one of my posts. Sir, I demand satisfaction, choose your second! Ooh, is that a mincemeat pie? Where are my manners?
Glove slap, baby, glove slap! -
So now we have the definitive name for Two Boots... translation tor Reality.. TWO BOOBS!!
does anyone want to translate in to reality some of the other PS places that Moms and Kids frequesnt?
For Instance..
The Tea Lounge can be renamed_______________ -

I said it, hussies!!! -

you want to play around with the word "hussy", go ahead. it's kind of hilarious.

Teat Lounge. Too easy.

i don't really get it.
i'm all for breastfeeding. in fact, i'm all for public breastfeeding. mothers should be able to breastfeed their babies wherever they want.
however. if the scene at two boots (tea lounge, etc) was exactly how the writer of the article described, then i don't think that's ok. lifting a shirt, unbuttoning a blouse, etc., is perfectly acceptable. hanging around--and i do mean hanging--half naked in public in nursing bras is not justifiable.
you want to sit around in a group and breastfeed, go ahead. it's good for your baby. but please, either have some decorum or have your little afternoon tea-party in your living room. -

If you ever have children, you'll realize that that the last thing you want is to be caged up in your house like it's a prison. Having a baby is isolating enough, and the sexualizing of of breasts and breastfeeding makes the most natural function taboo. Think for a minute exactly WHY it makes you uncomfortable.

As hideous as I find the whole PS parenting thing, I know that having a group of friends with which you can commiserate or laugh or breastfeed is a necessary thing if you want to keep your sanity.
I chose to bottlefeed my child, which was also controversial. It's a no-win situation for a parent.
There are plenty of grown-up places to eat and have a cup of coffee. Room for everyone. -

I don't think so. I find it cute. Wonder if anyone ever called Sophia Loren that. Or Catherine Deneuve. Or any of the other women who got more interesting and attractive as they got older. I bet they didn't mind. -

so you can't rotate living rooms? be a tad more discreet NOT for sexual reasons but because you're in a public place?

i don't think any part of breastfeeding is "taboo" in the way you mention it. i don't mind being with a group of nursing mothers; most of my friends have children, i've been in rooms filled with lactating mothers. but what i won't be is in a room filled with half-naked nursing mothers. even the writer herself found this impossible. -
milf is a crude word, but ladies that age well
are beautiful and even if they are real moms or not
.
