Woman Screaming Help on 2nd Street at midnight — Brooklynian

Woman Screaming Help on 2nd Street at midnight

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Did anybody else hear a woman screaming for help last night just after midnight. When we went to the window there were several people gathered on the corner looking up 2nd towards the park (from 8th Ave), but it seemed like the situation was remedied as they were all walking away. Does anybody know what happened?

  • I heard it also and when I exited my building to check it out the screaming stopped.
  • I heard it as well. I actually called 911--anyone know what was going on?
  • A couple were mugged on their way home. Two black males attacked them from behind. Cops caught up with them at GAP. Off to clinker for both muggers.

Scrapes and bruises for the couple, but they are OK and all stolen items were returned by the cops.

    Now, off to court.
  • A mugging, that's better than what our drowsy minds were imagining. Glad the perps were caught, and especially glad everybody is ok.
  • so where was this? 2nd and prospect park west?
  • I occurred at 2nd and 8th, I believe. The thugs took off up PPW.
  • walking down 8th ave at night kinda freaks me out.

    way to quite and dark
  • Two black males attacked them from behind
what the hell does the muggers race have to do with the mugging?
you wrote a couple and didn't give their race. why not? where they a black couple?
  • No, White & Hispanic...and why does that matter? Crime is a crime ,yes? :-k
  • Crime is a crime ,yes?
exactly, so why did you point out the muggers race?

I am on this train!! I understand how race is used to identify the perps in crimes.. But.. there is a reality in the City.. There are more crimes committed black on black... minority upon minority than across racial lines .. Every time I read "that" kind of racial description.. I read it as a racial slur....

why are you so defensive about it. its like oh please look out of the rapist. you don't know how they look like.

in the us the easiest way to id someone is first by race. second by other features. it eliminate alot of other variables fast.
  • It's simply wrong to use race to describe the alleged perpetrators. When is the last time you read "they were attacked by two white guys?"

In our culture false arrests are legion, many based on the scientifically proven inaccuracies of first person descriptions of alleged criminals. And describing facial characteristics is virtually impossible.

    Try it some time.
  • slightly off topic. look at how our air security sucks cause they don't do profiling!! random check doesn't work! We should follow the Israeli method! profiling works!

/end of rant sick of seeing dumb asses stopping old ladies and mom's with kids.
  • why are you so defensive about it. its like oh please look out of the rapist. you don't know how they look like.
i have not read one post from you that makes the least bit of sense.

what does the muggers' gender have to do with the mugging?
  • what does the muggers' gender have to do with the mugging
here we go... . can't wait to read more of these types of comments. i'm sure someone will be patient enough to write and explain the difference. why don't you first answer my question. what the hell does the muggers race have to do with the mugging?

crimes are committed by all types of people yet we only hear the race description when it's a black or latino person. i'm not even sure they do this on the news anymore.
"they were attacked by two white guys?"
    NEVER.

That's the point, I think. Specifying that the perps were male adds no more to the discussion than does specifying that the perps were black. A perp is a perp is a perp, in this case.
  • That's the point, I think. Specifying that the perps were male adds no more to the discussion than does specifying that the perps were black.
if that's the point then i very hesitantly agree.
  • Sounds like any standard police blotter...

but this wouldn't be the park slope boards if someone didn't get in a tizzy about something.
  • Kind of disturbing, how nowadays it's pretty much a given that anyone committing any sort of crime even remotely around the Park Slope area is black, MAYBE Puerto Rican. A symptom of the current race/income disparity, I guess. It suuure wasn't like that back in the day. O:)

Anyone remember when the infamous Park Slope rope burglar (a white guy) died falling off a roof more than a decade ago? The old 'F Train Bandit', another white kid. Would be shocked to hear of a white guy getting arrested in PS for anything nowadays, besides maybe tax evasion.
  • Erikka you are soo correct.

There are, unfortunately, 'people' here that love to bait and blame and next thing you know a discussion about toilet paper becomes racial.
  • whatchu talkin' 'bout, Cottonelle?
  • As the reporter, I used "race" and "gender" as a matter of public record. There was no secondary message implied, so please don't read into it.

That's why I so readily posted the "race" and "gender" of those attacked.

I think folks are being a wee bit overly PC on this. And this is coming from a "white guy" who has been mugged and attacked many times in Bklyn by ALL races.

No prejudice, no quarter. I'll hold no truck with any implications that my report was racially biased...but I guess now I am getting a wee bit worked up, like others, no?

I hope that clears things up, but it probably won't :(
  • if someone didn't get in a tizzy about something
tizzy? if that's what you want to call me asking how the perps race comes into play then that's cool. i never said lostingreenwoodhts was racist, i merely wanted to point out that the men being black was insignificant. just like the couple being white/hispanic was so insignificant that he failed to mention their race.
There are, unfortunately, 'people' here that love to bait and blame and next thing you know a discussion about toilet paper becomes racial.
if we are discussing toilet paper and someone writes that they noticed the "indian person" in the next stall didn't wipe their ass... i would ask the same question. what does the person being indian have anything to do with them not wiping their ass. if you want to call that baiting then yes i am baiting.
  • As the reporter, I used "race" and "gender" as a matter of public record.
really, reporters still use race to describe the perp? i haven't noticed it on the local news but i thought they stopped doing that years ago. you would know since i'm not a reporter.
There was no secondary message implied
i didn't think there was a secondary message implied but i also think that's part of the problem. we don't even realize the stigma involved in language we use on a daily basis.
    No prejudice, no quarter
please don't think for a moment i think you are prejudice. i really don't.
implications that my report was racially biased.
Your report was racially biased! you didn't share the race of the couple until i asked.
I think folks are being a wee bit overly PC on this.
i love when people say this because in most cases its those people who have never felt oppressed, fear or pain from being called ugly things.
I hope that clears things up, but it probably won't
i don't know if it clears things up but it certainly helps having the dialog (even if it is on a board)

i really wish we would all stop acting like there isn't a race/social-economic crisis in this country. if talking about it and pointing things out makes me overly pc or baiting or what ever the hell then i am all of those things because i really want to continue having the conversation.
  • I am just offended this woman screamed "help" at such a late hour. What if there were non-English speakers nearby--they could have been offended.

    That racist!
  • erikka,

Oh boy, plz let's not start with the snarkiness or I'll lock the thread.

    Thanks. Warning should be noted...

Wow! such a simple minded comment. i ain't mad at you though.... i recognize you are not alone and that's the reason this country is in the crisis it's in.
