  • GOD AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rated worst place to park in NYC.
Just had our car stolen 2 weeks ago, from 6th and Union.
    IN FRONT of our home.
  • go park it farther away from park slope in another neighborhood.
  • It's routinely awful, though it depends largely on your schedule and how you use your car. If you can be around when the alternate side double park car ballet takes place, then you might be able to grab a spot in front of your place and leave the car for a week. If you drive it everyday and come home at 6PM looking for a spot you might be looking for a long time.
  • Well one of the nicknames for the Hood is
    Parknope
  • When I lived there a year and a half ago it could really suck sometimes, and other times be really easy. Having to move it only once a week is awesome though. The big question for me was always the strategy of driving all over the neighborhood vs. driving the same blocks again and again waiting for someone to leave. I never decided which was better overall.

My greatest victory was getting a Friday spot over one weekend. It turned out that that Friday was good Friday so alternate side was canceled and I got almost 2 weeks out of one park - I didn't need it for work during that time. It's the little things...

I always called it Nowhere to Park Slope.

Seems like if you're trying to park after say, 7 pm, it's pretty bad (everyone is getting home). Sometimes there's parking along PPW, if you can time it for people leaving the movie theater.

Yes, and when you get a great spot like that, you just want to leave the car there as long as possible, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a car. One time I ordered from Fresh Direct rather than driving to Fairway because I did not want to move my car from a great spot. Parking in the South Slope used to be pretty easy, but no more. Yeah, if you can be home for the alternate-side-shuffle, it's not so bad, but again that's assuming you don't actually need to ever drive your car.
  • why is it so bad here?
  • too many cars, not enough spaces.
people who leave cars in spaces all week except for the 4 or so hours a week when alternate side of street parking comes to your side.
  • Our car got stolen a few weeks after we moved here from Manhattan.
In a weird way, I feel free without it.
We were always looking for parking.
A man and his wife tried to hold a spot once by just standing on it.
I have never seen that. His wife was going to stand there while he went to get his car. I wasnt having it, since I pulled up to the spot IN MY CAR.
We ended up having a war of words, and then he said I could have the spot just because i was a "LOCAL"
    Huh?
  • I have a driveway!! Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah!!!!!!!!

And it is one of the very few in PS.
I can't imagine having a car in this Hood unless I had a driveway or bought one of the coop parking spaces or had endless time to drive around looking for a spot and didn't mind parking in Midwood... and taking car service home!!
Having grown up in Brooklyn with a driveway (in Midwood) I just can't imagine the horror... 17 years ago when my daughter went to Brooklyn College she did it easily because she parked at my Mom's house on E.21st street. I don't understand how people own a car in PS with the parking situation what it is.
  • VEETS IM SO JEALOUS
  • It's really not that bad. Sure it can take some patience and Sunday evenings are the worst, but it is manageable. Be careful of being blocked in by double parking on alt side of the street days. Some jerks block you in and don't leave a phone # so you can't call them to move their car. Grrrrr.....
  • well its not really that bad. every time i drive to park slope to eat. i aways get a spot within a few mins. just drive around a few blocks around where you want to park close to.

this is actually, if anyone cares, ILLEGAL. of course, if you tell the person that, they'll key your car.

regardless, i'm afraid to say this for fear of bad luck, but i find parking here pretty easy. really depends what time and day you're seeking a spot.

He thought he was talking to some out of towner, until I made it very clear I was a Native Brooklyn girl, and got all GHETTO on his ass. He actually asked me what my address was to see if I was truly "local" or not.
I think my husband go scared of that side of me, as Im usually very nice.
But it was just ridiculous! It made my blood boil!
  • damn you had guts. i wouldn't do that cause your car could be key or airs let out of the tires too much trouble for a spot.

You gotta fight.........for your right........to PAAAAAAAAARK
  • i'm telling you, work odd hours. parking is easy peasy in south slope. and i have exceptional parking karma.
  • best thing to do is play with their minds. some guy stole my spot once. i move up to let some guy come out of his spot. some jackass races up and nose his car in.

I came out and said didn't you see me moving my car for this guy to come out. he was like yeah. but i got the spot first.

I said no problem, i told him things happen to cars when owners are gone. I drove away. idiot was siting there at his spot few hours later when i pass by lol.
  • you threatened him? you threatened a person who would sneak into a spot like that?

  • ok, that's like asking to get shot.

Oh, the same thing happened to me. I was SO angry. I had a red lipstick in my purse. Maybe you can guess what happened after the woman walked away from her car. I am usually very mild-mannered but I was incensed that someone would steal a parking spot as I was backing into it. She's lucky I didn't key her car, honestly -- I was that mad.

I would key the car for sure.
    Thats the evil in me.
  • Me too, but at this point the people in question have a good description of you and your car and you can potentially expect a visit from the cops.

It's amazing that the lucky people who actually own a car get all excited about not having to move it for a few days. It really defeats the purpose.

The few times I looked after my friend's car I never had a problem finding a spot (I'm close to Key Foods on 5th) though I do worry about the car theft I hear about...
  • our car got stolen the 1st 3 weeks we lived in PS. we left it on 6th and Union in front of our windows.
    GONE!

Used to do that all the time for my father, I would stand in the spot while he would run to grab the car. Not sure how they do it in Manhattan, but in BK it is common practice, just so you know.

Not even sure how I would react if someone rolled up to me and told me to move because I wasn't 'in my car'. Just a piece of advice, it's not the smartest idea to piss someone off and then leave your car where they know it is.

If you stood there and wouldnt move......i would have to run you over.
It ILLEGAL and just plain rude.
I would call the cops. I swear.
Im from Brooklyn, and no its not COMMON practice!

Yeah well not sure what part of Brooklyn you grew up in, but I grew up in Park Slope, so I'm just letting you know it was done pretty regularly.

Never said you should be scared, rather recommending that you think one step ahead of the other guy - but then again if you were a true Brooklyn kid, that should come natural.

And the cops would be more annoyed with you than the 'placeholder' for wasting their time. Yet something else you should already know.
