PARKING

Used to do that all the time for my father, I would stand in the spot while he would run to grab the car. Not sure how they do it in Manhattan, but in BK it is common practice, just so you know.
In a weird way, I feel free without it.
We were always looking for parking.
A man and his wife tried to hold a spot once by just standing on it.
I have never seen that. His wife was going to stand there while he went to get his car. I wasnt having it, since I pulled up to the spot IN MY CAR.
We ended up having a war of words, and then he said I could have the spot just because i was a "LOCAL"
Huh?
Not even sure how I would react if someone rolled up to me and told me to move because I wasn't 'in my car'. Just a piece of advice, it's not the smartest idea to piss someone off and then leave your car where they know it is.
Um............do I seem scared to you?
If you stood there and wouldnt move......i would have to run you over.
It ILLEGAL and just plain rude.
I would call the cops. I swear.
Im from Brooklyn, and no its not COMMON practice!
Yeah well not sure what part of Brooklyn you grew up in, but I grew up in Park Slope, so I'm just letting you know it was done pretty regularly.
Never said you should be scared, rather recommending that you think one step ahead of the other guy - but then again if you were a true Brooklyn kid, that should come natural.
And the cops would be more annoyed with you than the 'placeholder' for wasting their time. Yet something else you should already know.
yes your right
im not from Brooklyn
i just say I am ..........and yes Park Slope is better than the rest of the borough.........How can we forget? -
Well, RN, too bad your native cred means shit-all in your parking status here and now. Enjoy driving around the block, just like Sally from Peoria and everybody else you hate so much, because that traffic cone or mattress or your cousin Raoul ain't gonna stop no one from taking that spot--or double parking in front of it to make sure you don't get it. Because clogging up the streets with more cars is keeping Brooklyn real polluted and shitty, just like back in the day!
PS: DID YOU BY CHANCE GROW UP IN PARK SLOPE? And have you just considered making this your footer instead of stating it in just about every single post? -

Thank you Erikka!

It's kinda hard to leave that fact out, when displaying your va-a-ast knowledge of "The Nabe" after living here for (insert single digit)yrs seems to be the norm on this board. Someone has to carry on tradition. :-$

And actually I ride a motorcycle which I keep next to my crib, rather than deal with ridiculous parking situation. Hopefully it just keeps getting worse; maybe then some of you rocket scientists will finally get fed up and hit the road

nubnu wrote: why is it so bad here?
apparently youre unaware what 5th ave was like 15 yrs ago
its pretty simple - add 50 bars / restaurants to any neighborhood without adding any parking and the locals will suddenly have difficulty.
and just to highlight the point
years ago cucina used to offer valet parking service and
park peoples cars on carroll st.
they even had orange cones set up as if it were an extension of their parking lot.
considering they had a parking lot, this used to really piss me.
and apparently still does
-
garfunky--------i totally feel for you
that would piss me off more than anything! -
as for the great placeholder debate ,
my personal experience is that is relatively common, albeit surprising the 1st time encountered.
i have been both "victim" and "conqueror". MANY times.
every now and then theres a spot right in front of my building as we leave.
so my wife stands there while i RUN around the block or whatever.
it generally takes under 1 minute to arrive. BFD .
is it illegal ? i dunno .. but it is far more illegal to run someone down.
call the cops ?
if they even show up theyd probably arrest the caller.
so just curious ... do you plan on running them down before or after you call the police ? duh ??? -
Obviously I was just joking about running them down.
I would also not call the cops.
Im just expressing my frustration at the situation.
I took care of it on my own........... -
Oh i see, and i can understand that.
i prolly a blew a gasket the 1st time it happened. dont even remember.
personally, its been common enough over the years that if i see someone standing in a spot, i dont even slow down to ask , i just keep on truckin.
PS - If i happened to come round the block and saw someone having a WAR with my wife over a spot, i would probably kill them.
and im NOT joking.
be careful who ya yell at , ya neva know whos packin. -
Garfunky......it was this couple.....and they were carrying strwaberries and I was very not scared of either of them..........WAS IT YOU?????

doesnt matter,
youre the one that needs to deal with road rage issues, since you consider "war of words" appropriate to begin with.
im guessing this will devolve into a flamewar about gender pronouns any second..... -
Garfunky
We can agree to disagree. -
do not make decisions for me, thank you.
it is not a question of agree / disagree
youre clueless and over reacted. period. -
ironically, in the past few weeks, in that ethicist column in the new york times magazine, this exact thing was covered. he felt it was unethical (whatever...) and said he checked with the nypd and it's in fact against the law.
-
Garfunky............there is no need for this.
Have a good day. -

Not surprised to hear this.
ive also heard that double parking for alternate side is illegal.
ya ever see anyone get a ticket for that ?
additionally you've proven that it must be common practice ,
otherwise WHY would the NYTimes write about it ?
when in rome ... -
People take parking seriously in NYC.
That is all. -
I had a crazy ass stupid neighbor. she wasnt even on the spot holding it for her son. i was finish parking and this annoying lady yells at me i'm saving that spot for my son. i'm like lady youre not standing there saving it.
but i don't want my car messup i gave it up for crazy lady and crazy son. who started to go ape shit on me lol. they some how believe the spot in front of their house is theirs!!!! i used to find alot of them in sunset park and bensonhurst and i would say old parts of park slope too. -
Back to the original question, it's really not difficult to park if you do so before 6pm. After 6, it can be very time consuming. In the North Slope, I find Mondays to be the hardest day to find parking because the alt sides are Monday/Tuesday.
-
i rarely have a problem parking in front of my apartment or around the corner. but im more towards sunset park on 4th Ave. also what I do love is that If i absolutely can't find a spot within a block or two I'll just park it under the gowanus expressway on 3rd Ave. and you NEVER have to move it there!

Ha--over there I'd think you'd be more likely to have someone "move" it for you! -

don't know why you've decided to be so sarcastic and obnoxious in response to what i wrote. then again, when in rome... i sure hope you enjoyed yourself. must be hard to find things to do on summer vacation -

How unfortunate that IS TRUE..
Parking there is like leaving your car in chop shoppe land. -
Garfunky..........we are all nice people here.
Please play nice. -
you guys realize there are parking garages in PS, right?

Im sorry, brooklynpotter.
you did not do anything at all to offend me.
in re reading i must admit that this post appears to be directed at you, and I am sorry for that, the sarcasm was not actually intended to be directed at you and i simply did not take enough care when writing.
i can not deny this error. I do apologize to you.
the sarcasm was directed at someone who insists this is not common practice (yet there is a NYtimes article), attacks those who say theyve encountered it, and who made a strange unprovoked remark that im not sure whether to read as hostile ,malicious, or merely insane. see below.nubnu wrote: Garfunky......it was this couple.....and they were carrying strwaberries and I was very not scared of either of them..........WAS IT YOU?????
In light of Nubnus various hostile spewings in this thread,
precisely how is one to interpret this as nice ?
indeed how can one NOT think it somewhat insane.
Again , my apologies to you Brooklynpotter.
you were not the intended recipient.
I now yawn. -
Garfunky get over youself

Oh Yes I remember the Parking Lot that was a Co op.. Buy a share in a parking garage so you can park on Union Street!! Now wht was that about!! At the time I recal the "in price" was like 25 or 30 thousand.. what are those spots worth now?? Reality.. I ask the question but I think a lot more than that.
Hey don't be embarrassed if you own one of those spots..
We all understand.. Who wants to be tooling in the Hood for a spot??
You made a wise investment!! -
And actually I ride a motorcycle which I keep next to my crib
In Osaka?
