gelato/ice cream on vandy?
I noticed 2 weekends ago that someone is working on the space where Hibiscus used to be (corner of Vandy and Bergen next to Red Lipstick?)...and it looked like there's an ice cream thingy being built in there! you know, oh I dont know the word, where they keep the ice cream for hand dipping. No signage or 'coming soon' notes yet. Colors are beige w/chocolate trim. Anyone know what this is yet? Oh what a joyous day if this is truly an ice cream shop.

Yep, I hear it's going to be a coffee/ice cream place.
-
True! I've been told they're carry the Ronnybrook line of ice creams, etc. as well as goumet coffes and teas. Not sure of an opening date, but it will be sooner rather than later, perhaps in a week or two. I'll post with more info if I get some!
-
YES!!! walked by it tonight and they look just about ready for business - called Old Brooklyn Parlor I think? Old fashioned soda shop w/coffee and bagels. I swear, if those ice cream malts are as good as I hope they are...
-
Opening today! I'll post some pictures, and a review of the ice cream
, later! They also carry Gorilla coffee, my fave! -
I was at Bicycle Station this morning and noticed the new ice cream parlor/coffee shop. I walked in and told the guy I was just looking around. Then I asked him how long they'd been open. "Uh... just today!", he said. So I said "today!?!?! Congratulations! I have to buy something then. Gimme an iced-coffee." He made me an iced-latte instead because nothing else was ready to serve. Looks like a cool spot -- i hope it does well, and i REALLY hope they serve COLD-BREWED iced coffee. (Too many folks are sleeping on that shit.)
-
I'm obsessed with cold brewed, and make it at home however, it takes 12 hours to "make", that's a bit intensive for a commercial place, maybe. They serve Gorilla here, which is top notch!

Gorilla is good -- can only imagine it's BANGIN' if it's brewed cold. I cold-brew at home too and wish coffee-shops rocked it. -
IT IS! I'm incredibly hopped up on caffiene this summer, and loving every cold, jittery minute of it!
-
It looks so cute!
-
nice reconnaissance!
did you happen to notice the hours? -
It was easy enought to pop next door and ask:
Open at 7am, closed at 11pm, but give them a few days to work out the kinks. Nick says they're closing earlier than that tonight. -
Yep. I went to and had an excellent cone. The guy is from oustide of Detroit which explains the Detroit Egg Cream - which is basically Vernors brand ginger ale and vanilla ice cream. The name is interesting since the delicious "float" type treat is called a Boston Cooler in the Detroit area (where I gre up too). I believe the term egg cream a uniquely northeast thing.
Anyways it's very good. Vernors is delicious but tends to make me sneeze. Go try it out -
Just had a brooklyn egg cream... MMM. I want to try one of everything.
-
This is so cool. I think the last ice cream parlor on Vanderbilt closed in the early 80's. I can't wait to walk over and sample their goods.
-
i love the old photos of the 'hood on the walls. oh and i love the vat of lemonade. oh and i love the gorilla coffee. oh and i love the old stools. such a nice addition!
-
I had a lemon icy the other day. The cup was a little small for the amount that I got but they can always get bigger cups. The icy was fantastic and the space is adorable.
They have a cool counter and I met one of the owners/investors who was very pleased to hear that the store was being talked about here.

i went there twice yesterday
once as i was walking to fort greene with my lady for brunch
and a second time on the return trip
on my first visit i got a new york egg cream ( i had wanted to try the detroit style one but the guy working there said they were out of the special ginger ale they use for it ) service was good but mostly because it was empty when i got there. egg cream was pretty tasty and the price of $3 was more than reasonable.
the second visit was anarchy, we got there around 3:00 and there were atleast 10 people milling outside waiting for and or eating there purchases. I waited for about 10 minutes for the clueless indian guy working the ice cream station to scoop out some lemon ice into a cup. the owners 2 year old daughter was walking around in the store with little to no supervision and on atleast 3 occasions she walked out the front door and i was actually worried that she would wander into traffic on vanderbuilt. it was actualy kind of unnerving.
im not passing judgment as i can just imagine how chaotic the first week at a new ice cream parlor in the summer can be. hopefully they will get there act together in the coming weeks. -
yes, as a detroiter in exile i had never heard the term "detroit egg cream" while growing up there. but i know what a boston cooler is. vernor's is the bomb.

I stopped by on Saturday and had a mediocre egg cream. It certainly wasn't as good as Tom's. There was a little girl named Olivia (presumably the owner's daughter) sticking her dirty little hands in the ice cream. It seemed quite unsanitary. She was also scooping ice cream at random and basically playing in an area that should've been sanitary. All I could think was that Olivia was spreading her germs all over the ice cream. This place looks really cute but needs a while to get its sea legs.

Mrs. C and I might have been there around the same time as jgregorie and RBG. I think the owner was at his wits' end with the crowd and his daughter running around. He was kind of flustered and kept forgetting everyone's orders. He needs to get the system down. Hopefully the child care situation was temporary (he said his wife was out of town for the weekend- bad timing for opening weekend). The Ronneybrook ginger ice cream was great though.
If the owner is reading this, a few tips for improvements (I would have told you then, but you didn't seem like you could handle any other sensory input at that moment):
1) You've got to get sugar cones, man!
2) Add ice cream sodas and floats to the menu, especially a root beer float. If Mister Softee can make them in his little truck, surely you can do it.
3) Sundaes, or at least toppings for the ice cream. This is easy profit and people will like it.
4) You have to stir the Brooklyn Egg Cream. The chocolate shouldn't all be at the bottom.
Best of luck with what will hopefully become a neighborhood institution! -
vernor's is one special ginger ale.
hard to find outside michigan and surrounding states.
though i have seen it as close as buffalo.
whenever i travel to where vernors is i buy multiples of it to bring home.
i can't describe the taste other than cream ginger ale.
and no im not from the city who once had a battery of Freehan and McLain ... and Al Kaline, too. -
i checked it out monday night. got a strawberry cone. ice cream was fine but the cone was stale (or just really crappy). it was very humid out, but still, you gotta have a crispy cone. i hope they can get it together or i don't know about the longevity.

Went by Tuesday night and had an unspeakably delicious scoop of ginger creme brulee in a sugar cone. They gave me plenty of ice cream for my $2.50 (especially considering how high-quality the stuff they serve is), but it was a pretty melty and I had the same kinda-stale sugar cone problem as giraffehead.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for this place, though--they seem really nice, and I love love love that they're open till 10. And really, it's hard to avoid melty ice cream and a little cone sogginess when it's hot and humid out and your shop had open windows (instead of AC)... -
Went in last week, had some of the mediocre ginger ice cream, and my companion had a scoop of vanilla, which wasn't very good at all. I don't know if the ice cream is cheap or what, but I was expecting something better. The fat content didn't seem up to snuff. Also, the newspaper cart was blocking the ice cream case, so you couldn't see what was offered. Also grabbed an iced coffee one morning, which was excellent--not weak a la Joyce.

Bergen Record, are you kidding? The ice cream is Ronnybrook, considered by some to be the best ice cream on earth. The ginger cream brulee is loaded with fat, just look at my ass! kidding.
Not to your taste, fine, but what brand of ice cream do you consider to be better than this? -
We got a cone there a couple of weeks ago. We saw the same little kid playing in the ice cream. The owner and his friends and family seemed to be sitting at the counter. The guy working behind the counter divided his attention evenly between us, the only customers, and the little kid. I don't expect every immigrant to master English just to work in a store, but he should practice saying the names of the different flavors. Or, they could write the flavors on a sign and he could point. We gave up on a couple after asking him to repeat their names.
Obviously we need an ice cream parlor on that street. My memory is no good but I would have said that there was an ice cream parlor on Vanderbilt (first it was Tropical something, and then it was Krispy or whatever the clown's name on the Simpsons is) at least until the 90s.
It seems to me that this new place or any new food establishment would have a better chance of success if the owner were behind the counter taking care of customers instead of hanging out with friends in front of the counter and burdening the only employee on duty with child-care in addition to customer-care. -
i went there today. after i got a coffee and handed the woman my money, i went to get milk for it and she went back to cutting her pineapple to put in the blender...sans latex gloves.
i don't think she got the food handling certificate... -

I went to get an iced coffee today. When I walked in the guy (one of the owners? mohawk...) was pushing the garbage down into the can with his hand. He then went behind the counter, grabbed a cup, then scooped up some ice. I doubt he got his hands on anything I consumed, but I did have to think about his hand being in the garbage, then handling my cup, as I was sipping on my coffee.

I was psyched to walk past this place a couple Sundays ago - the guy working was offering free milkshakes to some cops parked outside. They asked what time he was closing that night and he said 11:00. I went back at 9:30 - closed.
Not to your taste, fine, but what brand of ice cream do you consider to be better than this?
So, I went a few days later with my girlfriend...
I don't know about Ronnybrook, but the chocolate ice cream I had there the other night was not very good. Besides not really being very rich, it was obviously stored at too warm a temp. It had a bad consistency.
The help seemed overwhelmed by the order of two cones (one with sprinkles, one without), and the lack of sugarcones is indeed sucky.
I hope this place gets it together, I really do.
Howdy, Stranger!
