Where are all the good restaurants in crown heights at? — Brooklynian

Where are all the good restaurants in crown heights at?

I just moved into crown heights and I wanted to know what all the good restaurants are in the neighborhood. I want to make a guide and also know where I can eat thats decent and still support my local economy. Any suggestions...
also, does anyone know the actual borders of crown heights. :D

  • No need for the "at." Just say Where are all the good restaurants in Crown Heights?
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Heights for info and borders. Grain of salt, and all.

What kind of food are you looking for? I ate at Chavella's over the weekend, and I have got to say that it lived up to the hype. Excellent! Even the kids liked it and they are picky as hell. There are a lot of good West Indian places around, that is for sure. You can't beat the old standard Crown Fried Chicken either, lol, bring a bib!

  • daver, thanks for the info. For the places to eat im looking for, the type of food makes no difference I just want it to be nice. Like the kind of place i could take my parents to when they come to visit. I live close to tavern on nostrand and that place seems to be nice. I also have eaten at sunshines on nostrand a little up the street from tavern and their food is really good. Its small inside but the food is awsome. I guess restaurants similar to that...nice but not too far to ride a bike to.

Thanks for the grammar lesson, you know sentence structure, now do you know any restaurants that are nice in the heights?
  • newmonement, you will find LOTS of posts about restaurants in this forum -- just take a look around! :D

the mods try to cross-post threads about food to the Brooklyn Eats board so that they appear there as well as in the appropriate neighborhood, so that board is a good place to look, too.
  • cool thanks sweet tea. have you been to any places you can reccomend
  • I like Tavern on Nostrand a lot, but word on the street is that they just dumped the good food and have a new menu of "bar food" instead. FYI. Asian Jazz is supposed to open across the street (same guy) though, which sounds promising.
  • Tavern changed the menu, but from what I've heard they didn't "dump" all the good food. Just added a few sandwhiches and took off a couple of the entrees.
  • I think the the food as Sushi Tatsu is good for delivery.. For things like chicken fried rice etc... I don't eat sushi there...but am totally obsessed with Gen, which is in Prospect Heights but it's worth the 20-minute walk or 5-minute car ride, or subway ride for that matter... Also like, the coffee shop on Franklin that serves dinner, forgot the name...
  • are you talking about saje? do they serve dinner?
  • That's it. Saje. They do serve dinner and have live music (I think on weekend evenings). They also have a little outdoor dining area now...
  • I have seen the band on friday night they're really good and they're there every friday night.
  • I haven't tried Tavern on Nostrand, but Chavella's is great. Also, The Islands (on Washington) is technically in Crown Heights and it is fantastic for Jamaican food. Gen is also on the east side of Washington, and makes some of the better sushi in the area (although you should check the sushi poll on the Eats board for the definitive debate on this point).
  • Thanks Carnivore for your comment.
I just ate at Saje tonight for the first time. The food was alright. I wish it was as good as their music. Has anyone ever eaten at Cerulli on mac dougal? I just read about it on another site. wondering if anyone else has ever trued that place. also found an awsome place for natural food (like vegan but actually tastes good (no offense vegans)) on Nostran called Imhotep. its nostrand and park place. anyway though cerulli...any word?
  • I adore Chavella's - seriously the best Mexican food in this area of Brooklyn. better than anything I've had in North Slope or PH. haven't wandered beyond, except to the ballfields, which rule, obvi.
  • Where is Chavella's?

    Classon between Prospect and Park.
  • hands down to a kosher place on Empire blvd;
It is called Boulevard Cafe and it is a classy place withe a great sushi and dairy menu.
  • Hey guest what is the other cross street on empire?
  • Ital shak on Nostrand is decent and its open 24 hours 6 days a week
  • Try Bombay on Franklin for pretty good Indian food.

I recommend "Secrets" on Nostrand Ave.Good food and atmosphere. For takeout, there is a restaurant on Nostrand Ave and Prospect Pl on the corner. They have some stools if you prefer to eat there. Their food is very good and they offer quite a variety from great salmon and mashed potatoes to oxtail stew, bbq chicken, fried chicken, jerk chicken , curry chicken, escovitch fish and fried whiting, collard greens, candied yams. Exquisite is the name. Just remembered.Their cakes are good also. I had them cater a few parties. Very good and you wont be disappointed. Culpeppers has good food also on Nostrand and Lincoln Place.
  • Try "bunch o' bagels" on Troy Ave. bet. Carroll st. and Crown St.,
They have real genuine Bagel's, and some realy great Kosher entrees..
