Bars on all windows-need a/c

i hope this is cool.... i started a new topic because i'm desperate.
i live in a garden apt with bars on all windows and searched high and low for an a/c. i refuse to get a portable a/c. i just keep reading they are useless. any ideas on companies that make a/c for windows with bars? does one even exist?

  • I don't think all portables are useless, it just depends on the size of your room. We use one in our bedroom, which is a pretty small room, and it works fine. My brother and his wife also have one in their bedroom, which is a much larger room than mine, and it gets really cool in there. They're expensive, but I have to say that when it comes to being able to sleep when it's this hot out, I shell out the cash. I just can't take the heat.
  • Yes.. It is about MONEY.. the portable units that work are costly but if you are sweltering this evening,,,,, project in to the future... Summer does go on!!!

I can make it alll day without a/c if I know I can get 7 or 8 hrs. of comfortable sleep.
  • hmmm, now i'll stay up and do more research on portables. i really had no idea it was going to be this miserable. shit, i'm considering an advil pm since i've already gone through a bottle of wine and still can't chill. argggg
  • For the record, my portable is 7000 btu's for a room that I think is less than 200 sq ft and cost about $340 on sale. It's more than a window unit of similar power, but it's not astronomical. It's a little loud, though.

I've seen people use thru-the-wall A/C units that have their own sleeve in barred windows, because those will vent only out the back of the unit, and majority of the unit can be inside the apartment. But I have a feeling you can only find pretty big ones like that, so if your window is small that may not work. If it were me, I would get a small portable and put it right in front of the bed so that the cold air blows directly onto me. I really can't sleep in heat.

But if none of those are viable options, maybe some dry ice and a vornado fan?

i'm sold, where did you purchase and what brand? my room is about 250sq ft. i'll take loud any day before i chose this heat.
    vornado fan?
    4 fans going all night

Oh sweetie.. I am so sympathetic.. I went through near a bottle tonight just for fun.. but I was cool as I was doing it..

There are places in this country that are worse!! Try the south, try New Orleans , try D.C in Aug. without A/c (that is why congress is not in session... the place is too uncomfortable!!) But NYC is its own hell hole!!!
  • No matter what sticky hot gross cities I've been to, I've never experienced the film that you get all over your skin after a day of walking around NYC on a hot summer day.

I am really sympathetic, I'm such a baby about it. Give me the middle of winter with no heater over this heat any day. I control my thermostat and pay for my heat and I set it so low in the winter that even my incredibly cheap mom thought I was crazy.

I do find that having air actually blowing on your skin, even if it's not cool air, helps at least a little.

this was great, i was moved by your sympathy... then you nailed me at the end... bragging about being cool. hate you! and that's bad cuz i don't even know you. skipped on the advil pm and just popped another bottle, here's to veet being all cool and shit, cheers.
  • in my semi-drunk state (too hot to actually be drunk) i have purchased a portable a/c on-line. I got the Sharp CVP10MX mainly because it is bucketless. it was way pricey! but at this point i'll do damn near anything to get some sleep.

thanks for all of your feedback, it was helpful.

Just FYI (in case anyone was actually thinking of doing this), dry ice in an enclosed space is a bad idea, especially if you're going to sleep. When the dry ice sublimates, the CO2 can asphyxiate you. Never keep a large quantity of dry ice in an unventilated area.

didn't think of doing it but this is a good thing to know, thanks.
  • I was just kidding about the dry ice...

I know, but you never know when someone is going to take it literally and hurt themselves. Sorry for being a party pooper, but I fight the Darwinian process every day at work and it's become a habit.
  • Ive heard that extremely shallow air conditioning units with side vents are available.
while i can honestly say i havent seen one, my understanding is that they are specifically designed to fit into the tiny area between window and straight bars.

check with the j & r appliance guys on 7th and president.

if that fails , try massive quantities of tequila.
    it wont cool you,
but at least you wont remember anything...
  • In my last apartment, we just set up the airconditioner in the shallow space available and sealed up the window on the fly. It looked like shit but it worked well.

  so THATS why im so light headed :!: :?
  • Until your A/C arrives, I recommend cold showers every few hours, as cold as you can stand, and stay under the water until you really feel chilled, and then don't dry out and don't put on pajamas, just put a towel on your bed and sprawl on it, with the four fans blowing on you.
I hate the heat, too. I'm sorry.

tried them with no luck. i only have 3 inches from the bar to the window so it is damn near impossible.

i don't even want to think about going home tonight. the good news is the portable a/c should arrive on friday or so they tell me.

as much as i hate taking pills.... it will be an ambient (sp) night for me.
  • well you've already got you portable but i was going to suggest for a mild solution those window fans. you can get em at home depot or lowes for a decently low price and though they dont chill a room like an AC unit does, they do make a difference. i have one in my bedroom facing directly towards my bed and i sleep quite well. would love to have another AC unit (we have on in the living room) but the electric bill would just be through the roof.
  • This is why you sometimes see that the bars bend out and away from the window as the near the bottom. That creates a space for the a/c.

im so sorry for wasting your time.

a client told me the jr guys specifically have a shallow ac unit for these types of situations.

did they not have such a thing ?
or was it just not shallow enough for your window ?

    best of luck.

just wasn't shallow enough for my window. i actually had the guy come measure it since i live a few doors down. i could have built a box as someone suggested but i can hardly put a nail on the wall so building a box would be a serious challenge.

no worries, not wasting my time at all and really appreciate the feedback.

oh ok , i was concerned I made ya walk around in the heat fer nothin.

at least maybe the info will help someone else.

  • ohhh yeah. life is good. portable a/c arrived today, hooked it up to the window and am feeling no pain.

check this out... i ordered 9500 btu but received 11500 btu. they charged me the price of the 9500btu.

my intentions must have been pure this week cuz that was a nice little blessing.
  • Imboogie.. That is such a nice outcome to your pursuit for an a/c.. glad you will be comfortable for the rest of the summer.
