Anyone know of a good furniture refinisher? — Brooklynian

Anyone know of a good furniture refinisher?

I left a hot pot on a wood table, and now have a large white spot right smack in the center of it. Can anyone recommend someone in the area experienced with refinishing woodwork?

Also, does anyone have an idea of how much something like this should cost? (It's a 4x5 ft table)

It sounds like it's probably wax or some other finish lifting. I would wait a little while and consult Heloise before dropping a bundle.

My Moms had a fix for that, let me see if I can get hold of her...

Before you drop $$$, try some very, very fine steel wool (Grade 0000) and some mineral spirits. Available at hardware or paint stores, cheap.

WEAR GLOVES AND TRY TO DO IT OUTSIDE (or open ALL the windows and get the fans going- mineral spirits are toxic as all get out)

Dip wool in spirits, and gently rub in circles in damaged area.

Someone on list may have better idea, but this has worked for me.

If you do need to refinish, I highly recommend Mr Wood (don't laugh- he is great and reasonably priced compared to others I got an estimate from). Redoing a large table is going to run several hundred dollars, depending on level of fancy trim. May be able to redo only the top, depending on condition of rest of table. It is hard to get refinished wood to match the old finish.

His shop was on Pacific St near 4th Ave- don't know if he was forced out yet. His number is 718-857-0075.

    Best of luck-
    Mary Mc.
  • If its just a white mark from the condensation and not a burn, try using coarse salt and olive oil. You put the salt on the spot and put some oil on, let is sit for a while and then use a soft cloth to work it into the wood. Repeat the application until the white circles disappear.

I've tried it several times on our kitchen table. It works but it takes 3-4 applications to remove the circles completely.
  • mayonnaise also works if it's really just a water mark.
