The Brooklyn Paper / Craig Dilger
The deal is done: Trader Joe’s is coming to Atlantic Avenue.
The long-rumored arrival of the quirky supermarket was heralded on Thursday morning with a bizarre parade featuring Borough President Markowitz, steel drummers and Downtown boosters — all wearing the retailer’s trademark Hawaiian shirts.
“Brooklynites know a great value when they see one — and now our long wait for our own Trader Joe’s is over,†said Markowitz. “We’re thrilled that this acclaimed store is setting up shop. Trader Joe’s will bring more customers to Downtown Brooklyn and residents will have even more choice … for fresh produce, prepared foods and groceries.â€
The store will hawk its chicken dumplings, organic coffees and fresh produce — but not its famous “Two-Buck Chuck†wine because of city booze laws — from the landmark Independence Savings Bank building at the corner of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue.
The building, now a Sovereign Bank, is owned by Two Trees Management. The Sovereign branch will relocate across Atlantic Avenue into Two Trees’ Court House building.

Too bad about our archaic "booze" laws - Charles Shaw Chardonnay (two buck Chuck) was voted best California Chardonnay yesterday at one of the most important blind tasting awards events of the year. Ha - $2 bottle of wine gets the double gold - I just love that. You'll have to go to 14th Street to TJ's separate wine store to get it.
-
oh i like trader joes. blah i wish they had it like more towards south slope or gowanus
or sunset park or prospect heights. easy parking hehe. -
No 2 Buck Chuck?!? Ah, that was the main reason I was excited about it! Damn the silly booze laws...
-
It doesn't appear to be that much further from me than Whole Foods is going to be and I bet that it will be open sooner!
-
You never know- the booze laws could change if enough people clamor for it. They did get rid of that stupid law forcing liquor/wine stores to stay closed on Sundays just a few years ago.
-
I have a friend in Denver and it's worse there. No Booze AT ALL on Sundays, anywhere!
I think it's a good idea. I'm tired of all you drunken degenerates on the Lords holy day!

O.K. I have a hint for all you people who want to have inexpensive, drinkable wine... Astor in Manhattan.. Lost Vineyards...If you order by the case we are talking $2 a bottle .. must order cases.. there is a minimum delivery which brings that up to ordering 3 cases at a time (at the most 4) but at less than $25 a case no big deal if you split the order with a friend.. They deliver to PS on Wed and Sat... There are a number of varieties both white and red from Lost Vineyards and the staff will explain what is available and "drinkable" if you call and are willing to spend 5 minutes (or less) in a lovely discussion about inexpensive wine with their staff you will get great advice.

Ah, veets -- I love someone who knows how to live the good life on a budget! For those who don't need cases, I recommend the liquor store (Brooklyn Liquors?) next to Costco. They're not affiliated with Costco, but their prices are very good. I've gotten some pretty tasty stuff there in the $5-$7 range, and there's some stuff there that's even cheaper.
Of course, Costco sells alcohol too... but not here, thanks to those cockamamie laws. -
The Liquor store next to Costco is very well priced, well stocked and a convenient "after thought" when shopping at Costco.
Re-read my post just now. Clarifying.. The wine is $2 a bottle bought as a single bottle or by the case but to have delivery to brooklyn there is a minimum order that necessitates ordering 3 cases to reach the minimum. At that price one case is less than $25 -
THEY SELL VERY HIGH QUALITY WINES ALREADY IN DIS NEIGHBORHOOD AT THE $2 PRICE POINT YOU SEEK.
ASK YOUR LOCAL VINTNER FOR HIS BEST VINTAGE OF THUNDERBIRD, OR THE 20/20 EDITION OF "M.D." -
Also, Cisco never fails to do the trick. Just remember that it is NOT A WINE COOLER or you will be dealing with the infamous Cisco two-day hangover.

I think 2 buck chuck is 3 bucks now isn't it? It is at the Trader Joe's in NJ at least (My gf's family used to drink a lot of it, but it got kinda old and tired).
And it is an ok wine, but double gold? not really. But a makes a great 2nd or 3rd bottle.
So does this mean everyone is happy about Atlantic Yards? :-' -

TWO BUCK CHUCK IS GARBAGE, TERRIBLE WINE
And it is an ok wine, but double gold? not really. But a makes a great 2nd or 3rd bottle.

FACT: WHEN IT WAS INTRODUCED THERE WAS A GLUT OF GOOD WINE GRAPES IN CA. STORE WAS ABLE TO BUY UP HIGH END WINE FROM GOOD LABELS THAT DIDN'T WANT TO BOTTLE EVERYTHING.
FACT: THESE DAYS WINES ARE REACHING RECORD PRICES AND DEMAND IS SOARING. THERE ARE NO VERY GOOD CHEAP WINES BEING SOLD ON THE BULK MARKET FOR TRADER JOE TO RELABEL.
FACT: IF YOU ARE TOO POOR TO SPEND AT LEAST $10 FOR A BOTTLE OF WINE SEE MY PREVIOUS POST. ALSO, GET DA HELL OUT OF THIS CITY. BROOKLYN IS MADE FOR THE WEALTHY AND SUCCESSFUL AND IF YOU WOULD BE SEN IN PUBLICK WIT A $2 BOTTLE OF WINE YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY IN THE WRONG PLACE. -

According to previous posts, Trader Joe's will exist in a commerical building that is currently a bank.
And it is an ok wine, but double gold? not really. But a makes a great 2nd or 3rd bottle.

If I am mistaken and learn that I must give up my apartment to make room for $1.99 dill-goat-cheese-olive dip, I'll take it up with Joe himself. -
Does anyone know when the TJ's is supposed to open?
-
I just hope they deliver...its going to be soooo crowded :-(
-
TJ's is going into the bank building, corner of Court St & Atlantic.
You know, the one that used to have the 300lb guard and got robbed every 3mths. -
How come the Trader Joe's on 14th St. in Manhattan has a wine store? Do the state liquor laws in that borough differ from Brooklyn's?

Different storefront, separate entrance. They're 2 separate businesses that "happen to be" adjacent to each other.
Howdy, Stranger!
