shooting on Bedford near Lincoln, in front of church 4:45a

Early this morning a man was shot on Bedford betw Lincoln and St Johns. There was a very quick police response. The victim's injuries did not LOOK fatal, he seemed to be shot in the upper thigh hip area...? any more info anyone? KWAC?

  • There was also a person shot on Franklin and Bergen and a person shot near the Albany Houses yesterday. The day before a person was shot in the face on Pacific St. near Rochester (but that's not Prospect Heights).
  • it is if youre a person who lives in ph and wants some street cred that you live where there are shootings and such.
  • when was the franklin/bergen shooting? i heard something that sounded like gun shots last night but i wasn't sure...
  • I'm on the corner of Franklin and Bergen, was it early last night? I got home from work around 10 and there were a few police cars up Bergen towards Bedford. Other than that it was quiet.
  • earlier today, gothamist newsmap had a shooting listed at 967 bergen at 9:52pm. sounds about right, there were cop cars and an ambulance at that end of the block. i'm in the middle of the block and the lights were flashing for a little while- you must have just missed it.
  • ashlee spears, thanks for the info! I guess I did just miss it, I walked up Bergen to Franklin and headed right into the corner store. I saw the cop cars when I came out but their lights were all out. And there was a cop car parked in the same spot this afternoon for a little while too. Crazy. Thanks again!
  • Subject: Shots at Lincoln/Classon

Last night as I was lying in bed I heard 4 consecutive shots. Looked out my window and saw a tall medium build black male in oversized white t-shirt running North on Classon. As he crossed Lincoln I saw him fire once more at someone or something behind him. He then jumped into the back of what I think was an 06/07 silver Dodge Charger and they took off North on Classon. Called the cops and told them all this and they showed up in about 5 minutes to search for evidence.

  • caseopele- no problem! the newsmap is a great (though sometimes scary) way to keep up on the neighborhood crime. i always check it after reading posts like these. sadly, it doesn't surprise me about 967 bergen- i've seen cops around there several times. one morning about 6 months ago i saw them leading some guys out in handcuffs on my way to work. i've also passed a lot of friendly people out in front of that building, too, so it's sad that they have to live with this crap.

gothamist newsmap has also listed a shooting at lincoln and classon this morning at 3:15am, as lox reported.

quite a busy weekend for neighborhood gun owners... paraderest or kwoc (or anyone else), do you have any details about these shootings?
  • ashlee spears wrote: quite a busy weekend for neighborhood gun owners...
Actually, one of the things I'm starting to notice is that a fair amount of the gunplay is by people that do not live here. For example the guy the police killed after the carjackings was from over near the southeast corner of Propect Park. The three guys who shot the two cops were from queens and far rockaway.

That's not to say that everyone who lives here is an angel, but it seems like a fair amount of the mayhem around here is caused by people coming into the area. I'm still trying to figure out why that is. Its not like we have an overabundance of clubs or bars, and while we do have plenty of weed spots, you can buy drugs almost anywhere.

So what exactly is the draw of Crown Heights? And why if you are an a$$#@)e with a gun is this where you choose to hang out?
  • good questions, Homeowner. My guess is that it might be related to gang activity.
  • I wish gothamist newsmap provided more details.
  • Me too, at least a definition of the abbreviations would help.
  • caseopele wrote: Me too, at least a definition of the abbreviations would help.
Which abbreviations are you refering to?
  • Of course now that I'm looking at it there aren't any. I guess abbreviations isn't the right word, although there is this one: Serious MVA / Mci. I know MVA is motor vehicle accident but what is Mci? And 10-75? You know, now that I'm thinking about it there's this remarkable thing called the internet where I can use a great search engine called Google!

So a 10-75 is: Evidence Technician Needed?
Pin job: When someone is pinned by a car in an accident?
Officer assist/injured Mos: Injured member of service?

Although I'm still not sure what BNN and MNS stand for. I'm a curious person by nature (not morbidly curious or anything) I just always like to learn about new things. ParadeRest, I really appreciate the fact you take the time to answer posts here. I think it helps bridge the gap between cops and the public a bit.
  • MCI=Mass Casualty Incident...Determined by the higher ranking EMS provider on the scene. An MCI is generally an incident in which there are more patients than the available units can treat at one incident requiring additional units to be dispatched. A three car accident would not usually be an MCI but let's make one of these vehicles a school bus...

10-75 is an FDNY code for a working fire.

A pin job is an auto accident that requires a victim to be extricated from the vehicle. The term refers not only refers to the fact that a person is "pinned" in the car but also the Nader Pin which is what the door latches onto when you close it.

BNN is the Breaking News Network. They have a pager service that most cops/fireman call "buff beepers" because the people that pay the ridiculous monthly fee are "buffs". Most of their customers are LI volunteer firefighters. I'm not sure what MNS is though.

Gothamist is a useful sight but not always accurate, is not a complete list of events and is often hours behind.

With the exception of the police involved shooting on Albany/Park, the rash of shootings in the 77 have involved "locals". There have been approx 7 shooting incidents (with victims) in the last 4 days in the 77. The shooting that occured on Lincoln and Classon was in fact a homocide.

To be honest, I don't have much information on the shootings because there is a serious lack of communication betweens tours, units and commands in the NYPD.
  • Thanks ParadeRest! One thing I've noticed since I moved to CH is the lack of information about crimes in the area. Absolutely nothing reported in the media. The cynic in me thinks that the media thinks no one cares what happens in areas like this. But I don't know enough to decide I know for sure why they don't report crime in CH.
  • Crime is not news in high crime areas.

    ^-- smells like summer
  • My next door neighbor said that a boy was recently shot and killed on Lincoln near Classon. She said she saw a memorial set up for him there-- candles, etc.

I wonder if that's what Lox saw? does anyone know about this?
  • another memorial went up on franklin this week, between prospect & park
  • The shooting on Classon and Lincoln was a Homicide, as for the Bedford ave shooting, the nice young man survived.

Park Slope has two weekly or bi-weekly papers, the Park Slope Paper and the Park Slope Courier. Anytime anybody sneezes in Park Slope (especially if his name is Bruce Ratner) it's front page news in both these pubs. As a 25 year resident of PS before moving to CH, I became a real news junkie and read every issue of both these publications. Since moving to CH I've noticed there are no local newspapers. The only thing available at the corner grocery stores is the Caribbean Life, where you can keep track of crime in Kingston Jamaica or Barbados, but not a drop of local news.

It just seems many residents here are more concerned about what's happening in the West Indies, where many of their families live and where many travel to frequently and possibly own property and plan to retire to, than what's happening down the street.

I'm just concerned that CH will never become a real community until the people who leave here start to think of Crown Heights, not an island in the Caribbean, as their home.
