  • Yes! sorry i have been out of the loop. I will post a new thread about it.
  • wanderer wrote: Ok, how about wednesday, august 22 for a general meetup at soda? I'll post it in a new thread if nobody objects to the date -
wow, newbie with initiative! that's great!

I'm somewhat of a Soda regular (I'm pretty sure the bartender that looks like Anthony Soprano knows me)... the crowd there does seem a bit cold but I just chalked that up to them being NY'ers. Soda has an awesome jukebox though, the DJs are good too... right out of my damn Ipod.

How does Beast compare in those regards? I might check it out Saturday.
I think Beast is more welcoming. It's just a place to go and relax and have a drink... it doesn't feel sceney in any sense. And all the staff is incredibly friendly... if you go there after 11 or so, half of the patrons in the bar are the waitstaff and cooks. So if you go there with any regularity at all, you'll get to know all of them.

Ironically, their jukebox IS someone's IPod. So music is whatever they feel like for the night although they do take requests. It really is incredibly laid back. And although their patio isn't huge, it has some tables. And you can hang out outside, have a few drinks, and enjoy the late summer weather.

And, best of all, their late night happy hour is fantastic. $3 on all of their drafts (and they have some good ones); $2 off their wine which is a decent deal anyway.

So I guess it depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking to scope someone out and take them home... not such a great of a place. But if you want to have a drink in a place that is a neighborhood bar, I'd strongly recommend it.
  • and even MORE of the beast crew was at cattyshack last night. this poker tournament is being taken over by beast employees!
  • What about Bar Sepia? I like that place, and the bartenders are not as assholish as the ones at Soda, who act like they are doing you a favor if they bring you a pierogi.
  • hey, i'm in a similar situation to the original poster - moved to the slope a few months ago from dc and am looking to meet more friends in the area. would anyone be up for another meetup (if the soda one already occurred) in ps/ph/etc?
  • Freddy's is a complete dive, if you want to hang out with alcoholics that will not do anything except gossip and thinks that they are great artists ever please go there. as gor taver please friendly crowd??? Soda not as ggood as it used to be Bartenders out of line and clueless think that they are the gift to the world but yet you can still meet interesting people. The farm is decent, union pool great place to meet people, so is great lakes or the gate if you are into Yuppies so good luck with your search....Try Cattyshack, great lesbain Bar will definetly meet females

    it's an anagram:

    1) RAVAGE SORT
    2) GRAVE ROAST
    3) STARVE ARGO
    4) VERSA GATOR
    5) GAS ART OVER
  • I'm guessing grave roast.
  • I'm going with ART OVER GAS.
  • I'm going to Soda tonight
  • Geez, Kaki, why are you always so negative?

I personally love Freddy's; I've always found it to be one of the friendliest bars around and they have a ton of fun events in the backroom. For the record, I'm not an alcoholic.
  • Subject: dangerous place

dangerous place it is, behind those backroom doors

one night at freddy's i witnessed two women gesturing and making loud noises at each other

one of them collapsed to the floor clutching her chest as an eight-piece orchestra played behind her mockingly

then all of a sudden these blue-haired ladies held up their glasses of wine and cheered the winner

i'll never ever ever go to opera night again

    ever
  • my only beef with freddy's is the bizarro drink pricing - what's with the extra cents? just charge $4 or $5 or $6. giving me change in three quarters makes me want to leave that as a tip, very annoying. I'm sure it is awesome for ppl who need to do their laundry, tho.
  • Can someone post all the local bars and their approximate locations?
  • laaaaame...I guess I was a little late on this post.

I am definitely in the same boat here. In addition, many of the few female friends I have made are leaving NYC. Is there another meet-up coming up again soon? I am always up for meeting new people!
  • Subject: Do you knit?

hey JoanJettofArc if you knit I'm starting up a meetup.com stitch n' bitch group called "Knit PH". It's will be held at Prospect Perk, Maha's and Freddy's Backroom starting in October. I'll do a posting here on Brooklynian next week, still sorting schedule versus getting the blog to link to the meetup account etc.
  • Cool The Kid wrote: Can someone post all the local bars and their approximate locations?
I think most people want to keep their haunts a secret.
  • Woo! Count me in!
  • We should definitely have another meetup. It was fun and a great turnout. If you pick a time, a place and a book*, people will come. Last time a lot of people were talking about noona lounge (vanderbilt and atlantic) so maybe that would be a good choice. But i haven't been there myself so can't vouch for it. Any place you like will be good.

*The book is to help us find you. Post the title on the list and then put the book on the table at the bar when you get there. An ingenious method for getting people together without having to ask a lot of awkward questions :)
  • I actually started this post a few months ago and then totally forgot! I would love to go to a neighborhood meet up....

the only problem with noona lounge is that it apparently isn't open 7 days a week and doesn't open until 10 or 11 p.m. when it is open. so it's not the best choice for meetup. I propose ripple on a night when they're not having some kind of event (during the week they sometimes have live jazz or comedy or whatever). when we have meetups there, we usually sit underneath the dj booth and that makes it easy to find the crew.
  • Yes please. Just don't make it on a Tuesday, or else I won't be able to come:(
  • i can't show on a tuesday either - cattyshack poker night.
  • I don't know a place where people can simultaneously sit, talk, and or dance (besides Soda) but whereever it is, I am down, unless it's next Saturday night. But yea someone make up a plan
  • Can we do it on a Wednesday night? We can celebrate Hump Day!
  • how about next wednesday (as in not tomorrow) at ripple?

edited to add: if we start around 7, I can bring this awesome hot hot hot pink book about the history of porn. everyone will be able to see it! :)

edited yet again to add: I'll try to swing into ripple one night this week to find out if wednesday is going to be relatively quiet (as in, not their standup or open mike or jazz night). if not, maybe sepia is the answer.
  • I've been wanting to go to ripple for a minute now. I find myself inescapably drawn to their 'high beam' drink special. for some reason I haven't actually made it in yet...
